Eris panted as he struggled to the next ledge. A rock gave way under his paw, making him freeze and cling to the ledge for dear life. The rock loudly tumbled down the side of the canyon and into the river. This is insane. Why am I doing this? Eris thought. His blue tail waved in the wind. He grunted and dug his claws into the rock, finally scrambling to the top ledge.
He looked down and quickly pressed himself against the wall. He was so high up! The stone was warm against his back, and it comforted him. Slightly. Eris took a deep breath and climbed the rest of the way, collapsing at the top, breathing heavily. He moved his head to take in the view. He was in a canyon, obviously. There were so many scents to take in, but one rose beyond them all. Sulfur. He looked at his paws and realized that they were coated in ash. He looked at where he had been climbing, and realized that he had gotten so heated up during the climb that his paws began to smoke. Ash paw prints went vertically up the wall.
He stepped away from the edge as some wind kicked up, dispelling most of the smoke. The smoke twirled and drifted away, just like the smoke from a year ago when he..... The memory started coming back.
Eris ran far away from the scene. He was cornered. A rabid wolf. Smoke. Anger. Fear..... The memory went as fast as it came. "No!" Eris gasped. He was so close.... So close to uncovering a bit more of who he was. He howled in anger at the sky.
Listen to my song, and listen to it well. This is for those who halfway live in hell. There are shadows all around us, stories untold. And the damned are the ones with no lifetimes to hold. Frustration anger, things with worse bite than bark.
We are like brothers, living in the dark.
Shadows into light, day into night, we will struggle but we will fight. Set fire to the rain! Eternity with pain! There was nothing we could do, nothing we could say!
Eris didn't know what had came over him. He lay down in despair after he finished howling.

Ani woke to an eerie yet beautiful howl in the mere distance. She blinked her wicked irises before standing and arching her back in a luxurious stretch. The she-wolf smiled at the scene ahead of her: Open skies and vast mountain ranges far off in the distance, tipped with thick clouds of fog. Ani flicked her fuzzy ear as a white butterfly danced in her face. She chuckled and exited the little den she had found, approaching the ledge. She broke into a sprint and dashed along the edge, heading for the singing wolf.
Ani breathed in the sweet aroma of another wolf and momentarily closed her eyes. It's always good to get away from life.. She thought as she scrambled up a steep, rock face that was just yards away from the wolf, or so she hoped anyways. Standing on a cliff like edge, Ani stared at the sight as a cool breeze ruffled her smooth, shadowy black pelt.
She drank in the air of approaching rain and a soft smiled curved onto her maw as she even thought about that weather. Puffing out her chest, Ani gazed at the male wolf.
Time had slowed down. It felt as if she was moving through liquid, all of the sounds of the world dimmed as her whole focus narrowed to a single point in the universe. Some called it tunnel vision, the odd-eyed she-wolf called it life. Her muscles reacted as they should- tensed and prepared, her movements well practiced and fluid.
Her breath stirred the fur on her paws as she crouched there, a primal instinct had awoken inside of Ani. One focused solely on surviving, and right now, survival meant judging her new found play toy.
Ani uncoiled from the ground like a rattler striking, time caught back up with itself as she sprang forard. Her muscles driving her with frightening speed and landing her with carefully calculated accuracy upon the ground near the wolf her mind was set upon playing with.
She felt the warm ground beneath her paws and she immediately reacted, it required no thinking - she'd done it too many times to have to think past calculating her approach. Her rump found a seat on the Earth and her eyes went into a warm gaze.
The primal instinct that had arisen inside of her quieted, and Ani sat still, as if the intense approach had not just happened. She rasped her tongue over her ches and ran it swiftly and modestly over her shoulder after words. Returned to her usual mindset, the she-wolf heaved a little sigh. No one talked to her, and she had no family left to love her. The odd eyes of the she-wolf wandered, half-hoping to see a friendly face that would offer her some relief from the omnipresent hush that surrounded her.
"It's kinda lonely our her huh?" she spoke in her silky voice.

Eris looked up, startled as he saw a shadow of black come streaking straight for him. He instantly jumped back, watching as it stopped suddenly. A female wolf, and very beautiful. Lumen by scent, but she didn't look like one. She looked like the opposite. Instead of casting out light, it seemed that her endless black fur was absorbing it. She was a wraith, with eyes that displayed two different emotions at the same time. She had a heart on her nose, but it seemed like a joke, for she seemed friendly, but also menacing at the same time. Eris seemed to be dwarfed by her, even though they were about the same size. He responded to her question.
"Yes, It is. I like being alone. I like the quiet. Don't you?" It was natural for him to think of himself being alone, and it didn't bother him, so he just assumed that other wolves liked being away from others as well. He looked over at the black wolf. She certainly looked like she was a person for quiet. After all, being a Lumen, she must love to have the ability to just disappear. He tilted his head. She looked familiar. "Anyway, what have you been doing lately?

Ani tilted her heart-shaped head towards him. Today it would be a normal day. In a moment she would talk to this wolf about her day, but she wouldn't have to worry about what her evening held. She drops to her side next to him and yawns.
She let the sun warm her fur. "Actually, just woke from my nap. You have a lovely howl. Just so you know," she replies calmly to him. Ani seemed to make a point of avoiding the first question. Without pause, she wagged her tail to add a friendly look to her.
Yet, her red eye gave her a still foreboding look. She tried to concentrate on making herself seem friendly despite this flaw. Now she was here she could better understand the reasons wolves climbed up here. She loved this view and her gaze flicked to the far distance.
You have to concentrate, on your own life and get your plan in action? She said to herself and began to howl her own soft song. A song of power, grace, beauty all hidden in shadows of a broken past.

Eris closed his eyes as he was swept up in the beautiful and melodious music. He didn't care about that one red eye. He knew that whoever she is, she probably has done things, some good, and some bad. Her two different eyes reflected his own life, one of anger, frustration, and rage, and one of sadness and pity, but also of kindness and warmth. "Thank you. I thought my voice was just a regular old wolf's. My talent is stories." Eris said. He wanted to ask a question, one question that one wolf always asks another, and that was this simple one. What's your name? But Eris couldn't ask that question, for he feared the question in return. What was his name?
Eris swayed slightly. His blue tail waved in the wind. Finally, he had to try and ask that question. "I want to ask you a question. But can you do me a favor? Don't ask me it in return. I cannot tell you why, for that is a personal reason. What is your name?"
|
He wanted to know this, for to him, seeing a wolf with a name comforted him, made him know that they were real. But his name? Did he even had a name? Was he real? Did he exist? And with those questions in his mind, he made up something that didn't make any sense to others, but made perfect sense to him. His life revolved around this very moment, each moment like his first. He didn't dwell in the past, for it had been taken from him. He would not look into the future, for he was not a prophet. He lived for today, and the next today. He would change tomorrow Today. He was the storyteller, the finder, and the gyre, the edges of the gyroscope of life. So with one final realization in his half-crazed mind, he made up a name. Who am I? I am Gyre, the one who stayed in tomorrow.Eris smiled. He was Gyre. He looked at the female. "Certainly your name must mean something important, for you look like shadow, like a Queen of Darkness." Yes, that sounded perfect. This wraith, this shadow, this Queen. Who was she? Eris directed his ears toward her, waiting for her response. He felt calm, almost emotionless. He tilted his head in a way that made his eyes catch the light in the sun, making them gleam. He sat down, wrapping his tail around his grey paws. The wind ruffled his fur, showing patches of green. His scar showed, just for a moment, before being hidden again by his thick fur. Eris felt like a different person, and he knew why. He was playing out the personality of his other self, the one he created. He was being Gyre. Gyre, the slightly wicked, calm, and clever wolf who loves nothing more than to mess with other wolves minds. Eris looked away from the lumen, a smile playing at the edges of his lips. Gyre wanted to have a bit of fun with this she-wolf. Eris would follow. Eris looked over at the black wolf. It seemed that she had the same intention as Gyre did. Her name? He wanted her name? "Animana."
The black she-wolf had been looking for a bit of quiet exploration that day. She was three-for-three so far, having met a wolf each day she'd bothered to be out and moving around, and though she thought herself to be a decently sociable wolf now-a-days, she still needed a bit of time to herself--one of these days, she wanted to know where things were. And as much as she adored the conversations, they were not much more than overblown procrastination. Granted, not much, as after the second day she'd made a good chunk of headway, reaching beyond the northern regions and into the western. Still, she'd like to memorize as much of the area as possible first, so as to seem more knowledgeable to any she met later.
"You have no clue who you are do you? That is why you wish me to not ask the same of you. I shall not ask you then," she adds after looking up at him.
And so, she'd rested some the night before, and chose now as the time to travel afterward. A slight concern for her sleeping schedule rested in the back of her mind--she had no desire to be diurnal, even if it was better for her--but she shook it off easily enough; one day of wakefulness wouldn't be enough to knock her completely off her game.
This was the third day though. That had to affect it.
She'd hit a rocky typed area after too long, and wandered through it rather eagerly. Few scents marked it--a small band of loners, perhaps? Or, better than that, not even banded; the marks were few and far between. Just a place some happened to pass by, and the deeper she went the less signs she saw. Curiosity peaked within her--what could be here? Luck and change, perhaps, a strange coincidence that so few wandered this deep into the area? Or something deeper, more important, something with the local beliefs or legends, that it is forbidden or impossible to reach the top of these lands, yet here she and this other wolf were... She stood slowly and tilted her head to him.
"We shouldn't stay out in the open to long."

Eris/Gyre stiffened as he saw the female realize something. "We shouldn't stay out in the open too long." Eris saw why. They were currently in danger, and they shouldn't be standing on this ground at this very moment. He tensed, hackles raising. The gyre self of him backed down for a moment, letting Eris back into his mind. "I agree. There's a small cave a few minutes north from here. But we might have to do a little bit of climbing downwards to get to it. Nice to meet you, Animana. And sadly, yes, I don't know who I am. But I know who my other is. His name is Gyre."
|
Eris said. The gyre part of him took over again. "Follow me." He said, but in a different voice. This voice was smoother and more confident. Eris assumed that must be the voice of his other self. Now Gyre, he stood up and listened. He focused on the wind. It sounded different whenever it struck a cave. Almost like a whistle. There. He thought, and started walking towards another ledge. He looked down, and sure enough, there was a gaping hole in the side of the ledge. Gyre started climbing downwards. He noticed that the rock was softer here, more likely to crumble and make you fall to your death into the raging rivers below. Gyre knew this area though, for he had explored it as Eris. He let Eris take over, stepping onto the hardest footholds. Gyre had a plan. He wouldn't tell this... Animana which places were safe. He would just leave her there, stranded. Gyre laughed on the inside, while Eris slipped onto the next ledge. * * * * Eris panted as he dropped at the mouth of the cave. He collapsed on the floor, heart pounding. No more climbing for me. I'm too tired. I bet my gyre half could handle it, though. But Eris needed a break from Gyre. He was a little too.... Dark for Eris's taste. But Eris had created his other half from the depths of his mind, and he couldn't destroy him. Gyre was a part of himself now, a creation with some kind of history, some kind of life that Eris could hold on to. What Eris didn't know was that Gyre was a manifestation of when Eris had been fighting in the rouge groups. Gyre was the clever, wicked side of Eris, the kind that showed whenever Eris killed one of the wolves competing in that cruel competition. But Eris remembered the competition nor the blood on his paws as he slit the throat of the leader. All he remembered was the other side of him, the dark personality of Eris when he killed. Eris couldn't see himself killing anyone, so he dismissed that feeling into another being, another half of his soul. Gyre was Eris, just as Eris was Gyre, and they were a whole, just separated by all of that time forgotten. Eris and Gyre will become one again, but only if Eris can remember what had happened. Eris stood up and walked to the back of the cave, confusion and darkness invading his thoughts. [/blockquote]

Ani had been following the male calmly. Then she had felt the softer ground. He seemed to float across it, so she assumed it was sturdy enough to hold her. This was her first mistake. Her first step sent the ground under her crumbling. The living shadow danced back and bristled.
Then, she looked up to find this wolf with two sides. He was gone. Gone! He left me! That mutt left me here to die! How dare he do such a thing! Her thoughts screeched inside her head as she looked to the cave further along. Her eyes blazed with anger and determination.
She took another step onto the path down to the cave. Her paw found sturdy ground this time and she moved forward slowly. Her paw slipped and she almost fell a few times, but she moved along until she reached the cave. She jumped down inside and seemed to cling to the ground for a long moment.
Her gaze then flashed to the male. "You bloody left me! How could you leave me out there on my own! I could have fell!" she snapped darkly. Her voice anything but the silky tone from before. She stalked towards the wolf, Gyro or whatever he was called.
Everything about her seemed evil now. Her eyes filled with inner fire and rage. Then, something made her stop. She turns her gaze away from the wolf to look at the cave wall. Fear and hurt filled her eyes, but were washed away swiftly. She knew where she was now.

Eris shrank back against the wall. Fear flashed in his eyes. "It wasn't me! It was my other! Please listen! I didn't mean to! HE meant it! I'm sorry! It's just that..."
|
Eris's voice cracked. "He's got me. I created him, and now I can't control him. Gyre is free. No bonds. I can't tell him what to do. He's gone- Eris stopped, seemingly cut off by something. The fear stopped, and calm replaced it. He seemed to grow stronger, and in the voice of Gyre, he spoke. "I had to leave you behind. After all, I wasn't going to mentor you through the entire climb. I thought you would be clever enough to figure out that the wall was soft and likely to crumble. In the event that you fall, you would've fallen on the ledge at the edge of the cave. I am not sorry for what I did, for I didn't lay a finger on you. It was of your own accord that you assume that you could do the exact thing I could do. Inwardly Eris flinched. Did Gyre want to get them both killed? Gyre glared at Animana. He bristled all over, and in those few seconds, the usual light and friendly appearance of Eris turned dark and sinister. He seemed to be saying, Go ahead. Try me.Eris seemed to be watching himself through a window. Gyre had taken over, and it was frightening. Gyre was menacing and wicked, and Animana looked evil and ready to tear both their throats out. He whined in his mind, afraid of what was to come. Ani closed her eyes and shivered as though she were cold. Her breaths came in short and ragged at first. Then they came as pants, and gasps. A memory had washed over her.
RUN! she had screamed, and Ani ran. Ani saw her mother come crashing in, jaws poised in a snarl. For a moment she didn't recognize her. The warrior nature of her second name had consumed her features and made her a snarling force of fury to combat Ani's attacker. Shame burned in Ani when she remembered what the drug had made her think. With the drug she had forgotten about her mother and everything she was fighting to do. She had called this wolf master and put her in danger. Now her mother was risking her life, trying to rescue her from that wolf. Tears stung her eyes as she was reminded of how easily she screwed things up and how she always put the ones she loved in danger. Ani didn't mean to get into this much trouble. She just wanted to find mother. But now that she had, she might never see her again.
Ani had kept running, not realizing where. Silver Caprina didn't give her any instructions, she just told her to run. As much as she wanted to stay behind and help, the message was clear: she was no help to anyone. "I's sorry!" she howled as she ran. How could she have done this. Silver had told her to stay at the pack but she didn't listen. Because of that, she was in danger, and she could do nothing to help. It was just like when she went hunting with her father. They had found an elk to take down, and despite the instructions her father had given her, Ani had gotten distracted. The elk came down on her, and it would have stomped her to death if her father hadn't helped to take it down. Ani could've seriously hurt someone that day, and now she didn't even know if Silver would get out of that fight alive.
She skidded to a halt when she saw the huge flat mountains in front of her. Part of her would've wondered what those were, like her sister had done. But now she just needed to find help. Maybe if she could get someone, she might be able to send them back to help Silver. The black wolf might be able to be of assistance, but Ani didn't know where that wolf had went. She had ran away so suddenly she had lost track of everything. "HELP!" she howled to the flat mountains. "HELP!" She saw the remainders of the fireflies drift around her. Tears flooded her eyes and she cried out again. "SOMEONE PLEASE! HELLLLLLLLLLP!" The fireflies continued to dance around her. Then she remembered how the fireflies were messengers from the Creators. She bowed her head and begged, "Please, Creator, please save my mother. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to hurt anyone. I just wanted to find her. Please, help her get outta this. Send her some help!"
She had felt the breeze of her father as he raced past and to the cave she had ran from. The last time she saw her parents.
Ani turned her back on the male and slipped off into the shadows. She dropped heavily onto her left side. Her back pressing to the cave wall as an air of sadness surrounded the once angry wolf. Her eyes fixed on Gyre and she seemed to look through him. "Yeah.. Okay.. I guess..." it was clear she hadn't heard a word the wolf had said.

Eris didn't know what to do. Animana seemed to be in pain. Gyre had disappeared, who knows where he went, and he left Eris with her."Um, okay....."
|
Eris said. He took a step closer, unsure of what to do. He took a deep breath, and sat down next to her. "What just happened? You were so angry, and then you just.....Stopped." It was likely for Ani to lash out, for she looked like she did not want to be pitied upon. But Eris saw, in her eyes, that she had just remembered something, something painful, and in full detail. How many times Eris had wished to remember a memory in full he could not count, but just seeing all of the fight blown out of this wolf....Well, it scared him. For once in his life he was thankful for his problem with remembering things in only bits and pieces. Eris scuffed the ground with his foot, unsure of what to do next. He never really dealt with female wolves before, or at least any that he could remember. But seeing Ani,-- for that was what he nicknamed her, laying on the ground, slouching almost lifelessly, it brought up his own memory. But it had more this time. The storm was wild. Lightning flashed everywhere. BOOOM! It struck, very near. He heard a scream. Mother! The tree had fallen.....Blood on his paws.......The smell of sickness in the air......It was rabid.....Couldn't defend himself....Just a pup....Smoke. Fear. It ran away. He didn't understand.... The she-wolf had wings. Where were her ears? "Don't worry, runt. You're one of us now." The leader......Competition......The memory dissolved once more. Eris nearly bit his tounge off in frustration. But he understood a little more. But all he got from the memory was this; My mother was dead. It didn't help at all, for he expected her demise was somewhere in his past, for her blood haunted his dreams sometimes. Eris walked over to the edge of the cave. It was going to rain. He sighed and lay down for a moment, closing his eyes before he realized what that meant. His eyes shot open. It was going to rain! The soft dirt wall that he would have to climb will be slick and muddy. He and the wraith wolf would be trapped for the duration of the storm, probably long enough for whatever predators out there to find them. He quickly shot up and nudged Ani. "Get up! We have to go! He said urgently. Small drops of rain already started to fall. Time was running out. [/blockquote]

Ani looked up swiftly to see Eris next to her. He was looking at her, and he seemed scared. She watched him walk away and lay down. Had he remembered something as well. He lays down and closes his eyes, so she closed her own.
Suddenly, she felt him nudge her side. Her eyes shot open and she blinked. Get up? We have to go? What did he mean and.. She shook her head and stood to look at him. "We have to leave? Okay.."
The shadowy wolf blinks her odd eyes and shakes her fur out. It fell effortlessly back down along her body. Smooth as before. She seemed more herself now. His tone had snapped her back into reality. "Lets go then! Wasting time standing around like idiots!" she growls swiftly padding towards the cave exit.

Eris was slightly relieved as Ani decided to leave with him. He was afraid she wouldn't listen for personal reasons, and for pride. He scrambled back up the wall, clinging to the edge as more dirt crumbled. Gyre wasn't going to help him now. In fact, Gyre seemed to be enjoying the danger of the situation. Gyre felt like a kid in a roller-coaster. Eris could practically hear him going Wheeee.
Eris dug his claws into the wall and heaved himself up, rolling onto the edge. He panted, then got up and shook himself. He needed to tell Ani where to go.
"Ani! Put your foot on that ledge! Now go left, and you'll see a foothold! That's solid. Go onto the next ledge up, and you'll be near the top. Step on the footholds that are colored darker than the rest."

* * * * Gyre never liked helping people, and he certainly didn't like helping someone against his own will. But he didn't protest too much. He wouldn't like to see such a character as Ani go to waste. He was curious about her. He wanted to follow her, figure out who she was. So he lay low for a while, letting Eris guide her through this obstacle. [/blockquote]

Ani looked at Grye and nodded. She followed his words, his directions until she was next to him once more. Her pelt frizzed from the rain and muddy from the dirty climb. She sat slowly and looked at him with calm eyes.
"You chose to help me that time," she noted and her tail wagged faintly. She was just glad to be alive now.
That was when the face of Star came into her mind. Her eyes went wide and she stood up swiftly. Her gaze flicked to the ground. That was where she saw it.
A little spider crawled harmlessly about her paw. Ani let out a shrieking cry and jumped over Eris. She lands on the far side of him, near tears. "Kill it! Please! Kill it!" she wailed like a hurt pup.

Gyre jumped back as Animana jumped and started wailing, "Kill it! Please, Kill it!" Gyre looked over at what the fuss was about. A small spider crawled away from her quickly. Gyre snorted. A spider? By the looks of it, It wasn't anything poisonous. He smirked and stepped on it, but he didn't kill it. He had just stepped on it's legs, trapping it. It tugged away from him, trying to escape."This little thing? Well, I won't kill it. I'm going to EAT it."
|
He bent down slowly, a smile on his face. What was she going to do? He distantly remembered something about spiders, something from Eris's childhood.... Eris walked beside a fallen branch, following a small spider that was scuttling along the surface. Would it taste good? Eris leaned over and scooped it up in his mouth, eating it. It tasted delicious. He looked up at the sky. A storm was approaching.Gyre shook his head as the memory cleared. The spider was steadily escaping. Already it had pulled one of it's legs off in an attempt to free itself. Such a brave little creature. A pity he had to eat it. He lowered his head even more, being reminded of a pup trying to gross out some of his sisters by eating a spider. He watched Animana closely while slowly moving his head closer to the seven-legged spider. The leg that it had pulled off was still twitching.
