At this moment of time, Obi would like very much to be somewhere else. He had pushed himself under the rock barely far enough when the dragon started poking her nose in the openings. He nipped at them a bit but never got close enough for her to snag him. "Well done, Obi!" He grumbled to himself once he realized that the dragon was going to be waiting there till either he burned or he came out for her to snatch him. "You've got a insane dragon waiting to snatch you up for lunch, fire waiting to barbecue you for the dragon, oh you'll die from blood loss, then burn to death then most likely end up in the dragons stomach."
He howled in frustration, then rolled over to his side to find damp dirt. He would've blamed it from his gash that, upon closer inspection, he discovered ran down most of his left side which was facing up wards, no where near the ground. So he pushed himself farther back in the cramped hole only to find it more damp and going deeper. There was a small tunnel that most likely led to the river. And the river led to the dens.
Obi would've leaped with joy at that moment if he could. Instead he just did a weird squirming dance. Now, if only he could figure out how to make the hole deeper without attracting attention from the dragon and making his wound worse? From digging into this hole he had already tore his side open even more if only...
That's when it struck him, his head! Silly but it wouldn't put to much strain on his side nor would it make much noise, it would just be slower. Gently he put his head as far down as it would go, grabbed a piece of dirt in his mouth, came out and spit it on the ground.
"Ick! This is so not as good as a jackalope!" He complained before continuing on.

She coughed, the only air to revive her was foul smoky air. Tobias spoke and she opened her eyes, looking up at him with tear beginning to well. She was terrified.
She felt a thud and stared over toward the dragon that had landed. Obi was over there...she coughed again, "Obi's trapped.....Toby what do we do?" She looked up at him, she knew that they stood no chance if there were to attack the dragon. Her heart was racing and she was beginning to feel light headed. They needed to get away.
"Mimzy......I need to find Mimzy...." She was torn, what could she do? Her brother was trapped, her daughter was no where to be seen. She had to know if Mimzy was alright. Maybe the fire would die out and the dragon would get bored with Obi. She hoped so. She tried to stand, the smoke was making her weaker by the minute. |

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,true][atrb=cellPadding,0,true][atrb=width,467,true] | [atrb=background,http://i600.photobucket.com/albums/tt87/Tye-Lily/Comissions/tobiasbg2.png]Tobias hated himself more than he possibly ever had in his entire life. He had put Keely in danger. She was hurt and weak, and it was because of him. This was exactly what he had been trying to prevent. He had wanted his siblings to get away. He couldn’t even take care of himself; his little sister had to save him. And now Keely was hurt and Obi was trapped and he couldn’t think straight. He felt worthless and scared. He felt weak and stupid.
And there was Keely, asking him what they should do. And Toby had no idea. They had to get the dragon away from Obi. But that was foolish and impossible. But they couldn’t just leave him. His mind raced and he felt dizzy. Along with the thick smoke and the stench of dragon he could smell Obi’s blood. The fire still roared behind them, ever drawing closer, they were both coughing, and Obi was howling in frustration.
Wait, Obi? The faint voice of his brother hadn’t come from the direction the dragon was sitting it. It had come from the other way. That was…strange. Was Keely wrong about where their brother had hid? He dragged himself weakly in the direction the voice had come from, nudging Keely along with him. It didn’t smell like Obi at all. Maybe his ears were playing tricks on him. All he could hear was the crackle of the fire and a familiar rushing sound, so familiar that he almost tuned it out out of habit. It was the river that wound its way under the plains, even all the way out here. There must be a small opening around here, dug by a small creature perhaps and Obi must be near another opening and his voice had carried…
Suddenly Tobias had a crazy idea. He had no clue if it would work, but it was all he could think of. He put his ear to the ground and listened until the sound of the river below them was clearer. Behind and partially under a fallen tree was a sizable sinkhole. This was better than he expected. The tree provided cover from the dragon, so maybe, just maybe this would work.
He looked to his sister. “Keely, I know it’s hard to breathe right now, but we need to bark and howl as loud as we can into this hole. I heard Obi’s voice from here, so I’m hoping that the dragon will hear us too. There are probably lots of little holes like this and if we can make enough noise,it might sound like there are a lot of wolves all over the plains. The dragon might get confused or curious and wonder where it’s all coming from. It might leave Obi long enough for us to get him out and get away from here.” Just that little speech had already left him nearly breathless, but he didn’t have time for that now. “And then we’ll find Mimzy. She’s a smart girl. I’m sure she’s fine,” he added.
The hole was wide enough for both small wolves to stick their heads in, which Toby did. It smelt of dirt and mold and the river was louder with the sound of the fire lost somewhere above him. The normally quiet Lyxxus was weak and tired, but he put those thoughts out of his mind and began to howl as loudly as he could. His lungs burned, but he ignored it. If they were lucky Obi would catch on as well and do his point in the noise making. And if they were very lucky, this crazy plan might work.

The she dragon pressed her head against the rocks, trying to hear what the injured wolf was doing in his little hidy hole. She could hear plenty of movement, which somewhat confused her- it must have been a tight squeeze in there. With another defiant screech, she ripped at the rocks once more, and they began fracturing in response. Rage consumed her, no wolf outsmarted her.
Ignoring the other pair, her mind was set on this one. She couldn't even see them anymore, they had been swallowed by the dark plume that grew thicker and more toxic as the flames grew and spread. Her claws scratched and scrambled at any holes they could, if he wouldn't die by her jaws, he would die in his little tomb.
It was then the echoes hit her audits. For a moment, her long neck rose to look around. She could hear them, faintly, but could not see them. With a disgruntled growl, the dragon dismissed them as an immediate threat. She wasn't stupid, once they became apparent, then she would deal with them. Going back to her game of cat and mouse, the beast continued her violent assault on the rocks, they were bound to give way eventually.
More noises attacked her audits, but these ones were different. But she heard them, loud and clear. Her babies were calling. With a defeated roar, the beast abandoned her game. Flaring her wings, she burst into the sky, black orbs having one last look below. She couldn't see anything. The threat had been minimized. Either by her claws or the fires. She turned off into the distance, red scales sparkling in the pre-dusk light.

Obi stared at the big crack in the rock above his head with huge eyes. His jaw hung open, the last bits of dirt falling off of his tongue.
"Holy..." He started, breathing his relief when it finally hit him that the wooshing sound had been the dragon flying away. "That dragon's insane! Bonkers, lost all her marbles, absolutely crazy!"
He touched the crack and felt how hot it had become. Quickly turning to the cool wet dirt, he started digging again. his paws fit in front of him now and he used that to dig. He was safe from the dragon but he could still become a deep fried obi on a stick.
As the temperature became hotter, Obi became more frantic with his paws. Suddenly his paw landed on a piece of dirt which collapsed into a hole. A rush of cool air brought relief. A few feet below him was a ledge with patted dirt and a few feet down from that ledge was a raging river. Sighing with relief he poked out the last few pieces of dirt which fell to the ledge below, which, he figured out as his eyes adjusted, was rock. Slipping his paws before him, he wiggled through the little opening he had made.
At first he was stuck but with a little wiggling, he slipped through. It was a bit surprising and he landed on his left paw wrong. He stood up, gasping in pain. He hobbled a few inches before laying down, hoping that someone would find him. Hopefully someone nice.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,true][atrb=cellPadding,0,true][atrb=width,500,true][bg=546b56]Blindly she followed and obeyed her larger brother. He was smart, he always knew what to do. She panted and coughed. It took all her energy to bark into that tiny hole. She barked and barked until her noise was just shallow breath. Her sunshine pelt was covered with soot and ash. She was fueled by the want and safety of her family that she held so dear.
Her tall ears turned at the dragon bellowed and screeched. Was Obi ok? The great beast flew off and away. Her watering eyes followed it into the sky. Then things became blurry and her head felt all swimmy. She turned to look at Tobias, wanting to say something. Wanting to tell him about the the little black dots filling her peripheral vision. Or the high pitched tone that seemed to drown everything out. However all she could do was sink to the ground and close her eyes as consciousness slipped away...the smoke had finally gotten to her. |

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,true][atrb=cellPadding,0,true][atrb=width,467,true] | [atrb=background,http://i600.photobucket.com/albums/tt87/Tye-Lily/Comissions/tobiasbg2.png]Tobias barked and howled with everything he had. But it wasn’t working. There was a sinking feeling in his stomach but he kept at it anyway. This was all he had, this was his only plan. If this didn’t work his brother was going to die. If this didn’t work… He felt helpless and weak. And the dragon wasn’t moving at all.
Then, with seemingly no cause, the ground trembled as the beast took to the air. He looked up and squinted at the retreating figure. He had no idea what had finally caused it to leave. He just knew it didn’t have anything to do with his stupid plan. But he didn’t have time to think about it right now. He looked at Keely, too tired to be relieved. And then she sank to the ground and Toby’s eyes widened in fear.
He knelt down with her and thanked the Great Spirit that she was still breathing, although it was shallow and a little hiccupy. He needed to get her away from this smoke. The fire was still moving closer, he didn’t have a lot of time. He nosed his way under her belly, moving her onto his back. Although he was pretty small himself his sister was tiny and he was surprised by how light she was. He moved as quickly as he could, which between the added weight and the fatigue from the smoke inhalation wasn’t too quickly.
After a while, which seemed much longer to Toby, he reached a small area where the ground was free of grass, nothing but rocks and dirt. Then Toby remembered the small fire that had stuck a few months previous due to a lightning strike. It hadn’t been so dry then, and the rains had put the fire out without much danger. It had been too dry for the grasses to grow back and there was nothing left here that could burn. It would serve as a natural firebreak. The fire wouldn’t spread in this direction. Keely would be safe here, at least until he could get back to Obi and, well, he wasn’t sure what he was going to do. He lowered her off of his back and nuzzled her gently. She had to be okay. She just had to be.
He didn’t want to leave her, but the dragon was gone and he knew he had to. He had to make sure his family was okay. He had to be the strong one for now. He gave her one final glance before stumbling back to the rocks where his brother had been trapped. He sniffed around the boulders, checking to see if any were loose or if there was room to slip through. “Obi!” he called, hoping that there would be some answer from his brother. “Obi! Can you hear me?”

Obi was currently in his own world. His eyes were closing slowly as he struggled to stay conscious, the rushing river a few feet below him was like a lullaby. His wound was torn wider when he had fallen but the bleeding was stopping... at least he thought it was.
'I should really look at it.' He thought but he never could find the will in himself to look.
"Obi!" Obi's eyes shot open. He hadn't realized he had fallen to sleep. His head rang and his eyes were blurry. Blinking a few times to clear his blue eyes he looked around. He couldn't figure out why he was here but somewhere in the back of his mind it made sense.
"I could've sworn I just heard Toby." He said out loud. Just when he was about to give up again he heard his voice again, calling his name. Suddenly everything came rushing back to him. He tried to jump up only to feel a pain down his side.
"TOBY!" He called as loud as he could. "Toby! I'm under the rock, there's a tunnel, it leads to there river! I think it will lead us to the dens! Is -" He was cut off as his chest heaved. A horrid choking sound came from his throat and he coughed up a little pool of blood.
Breathing carefully, so that his alarm didn't come across in his voice, he continued, but stared down at the blood with wide eyes.
"Get Keely and yourself down here!" He finished, closing his eyes as he forced himself up. Gasping in pain he used his paws to cover up the blood with dirt. He could worry about this later after everyone is safe.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,true][atrb=cellPadding,0,true][atrb=width,467,true] | [atrb=background,http://i600.photobucket.com/albums/tt87/Tye-Lily/Comissions/tobiasbg2.png]Tobias was utterly relieved to hear his brother’s voice drift out from the rocks, but the feeling didn’t last long. His ears twitched at the chocking cough. That was not a good sound. They weren’t out of this yet. He could smell blood. Obi was hurt, but he had no idea how severely.
He continued to nose around the pile of rocks until he found the opening Obi had crawled through. He could feel cool air wafting up from below, a strange feeling in the stifling heat. However, since the dragon had landed on the rocks things had shifted and the opening was much smaller now. There was just enough room that he thought he could squeeze through, but there was no way he was going to be able to get Obi back through this opening, especially not injured.
Tobias lifted his head up from the rocks and looked toward the oncoming fire. It wouldn’t be long before this area would be submerged in flames. He had to figure out what to do, and fast. He had an idea, but it was stupid and suicidal and even a worse plan than barking into a hole to distract the dragon had been. And it seemed to be the only option…
He turned back, looking toward the firebreak where he had left Keely, but there was no way to see that far in this smoke. If anything came for her…no, nothing would be coming toward the fire. Even predators had instincts and those screamed to get away from the flames. Keely was okay, still breathing and more or less intact. Once she got her breath back she should be able to get back to the dens on her own power. He had left her in the safest place he possibly could and now he had to trust her to take care of herself. She had pushed him out of the flames earlier after all. Still, he couldn’t help but felt a pang of guilt at leaving her behind. “I’m sorry, Keely,” he whispered. And I’m even sorrier if this plan gets Obi and me killed, he added silently.
For the first and probably only time in his entire life, Toby was thankful for his small size. It was a still a struggle to work his way through the opening, but he inched himself along until he was through. He moved slowly down the short tunnel, waiting for his eyes to adjust to the darkness. He was nearly exhausted by this point, but he continued to fight it off as best he could. He crawled to the end of the tunnel and paused at the edge. “Obi,” he called down to the shape that must be his brother, “Are you okay? Is there enough room for me to join you down there?”

Obi heard rocks being shifted before he heard Toby. Obi had gotten himself up in a standing position, leaning against the wall when he saw Toby's face peek over the ledge. Being loopy from loss of blood, Obi grinned up at Toby and said,
"How's the weather up there?" Pain in his side brought him back to more serious matters but not before giggling a whole lot.
"I'm fine...ish. There should be enough room for you to jump down now," Obi moved out of jumping range. "The ledge is pretty big it looks a bit like a path almost... I think it leads to the dens. Is Keely safe?"
Obi had noticed the lack of Keely's scent. He was too tired to get over protective brother currently but he would at least like to know she was safe. His mind kept drifting to the safety of Lydia but each time he did, he reminded himself that Lydia was most likely safe in the dens.
Blood seeped through Obi's fur and smeared on the wall as he slowly made his way up the river. He figured he would get a head start since Toby would be much faster then him. Breathing heavily with each step he decided to sit a few feet away from where he was originally and wait for Toby.

The ledge was damp and slick and his claws did little for traction on the hard rocks. It was incredibly dark in the tunnel, and even his Lyxxus eyes weren’t enough for him to make things out clearly. The air was heavy down here, not as thick as the smoke above, but musty and still. The river raged by below them, and Tobias was again reminded of the danger here. His ears lowered a bit at the constant dim of the rushing water, made even louder by the echoes on the tunnel walls.
“Keely’s safe,” he said loudly, reassuring himself as much as his brother. “The smoke got to her but she’s in a safe place and should be okay.” He paused for a moment before adding more softly, “She saved me.” He wanted desperately to get back to her and to be certain she was alright, but he knew that this was where he needed to be right now. For once, his brother needed him.
He could smell the bloody on the heady air and stepped in close to his brother. “Let me see…” It was hard to tell where the wound started and ended in the dark, his fur was so matted with dark blood. Standing this close to his brother, he noticed the heavy breathing. The fur on the back of Toby’s neck began to prickle and stand on end. Obi was hurt far worse than he had thought. He had lost a lot of blood, and seemed to be on the verge of going into shock. The dens were not exactly close by and he wasn’t certain that they had a lot of time. “Can you make it?” he asked, his voice demanding honesty.

"Yeah I'm fine..ish." He added the last part after staring a few moments into Toby's eyes and not being able to lie. "I can make it to the dens at least. I think they are up this way. We should make noise so that they can hear use if anyone is in the dens."
Obi started to walk again but he felt a rush of adrenaline run through him and his legs started to shake, causing his walk to slow. He moved like a drunk bee, shakily moving one way and then the next, trying hard to walk in a straight line. His vision blurred as the wall hit his wound. Yelping out he continued, hoping his vision would recover but it didn't. In fact it got worse.
"I need to stop for a second." He whispered, feeling another one of those horrid coughs build up in his chest again. He slumped against the wall and slid down, resisting the comforting darkness that now lined his vision. Looking back, Obi saw he was just a few yards from where he had first started walking.
Growling in frustration, he tried to get up and found that he couldn't. His legs were suddenly to weak. And then the coughing started, building up in his chest again, making him convulse over and over again, pain spread through out his body and he barfed up blood onto the ground.
"Lovely." He said, gritting his teeth. He forced his legs into working properly, standing up like a new born fawn, stumbling every which way. Ringing in his ears confused him and he stumbled towards the river, tripping over a walk and falling right in.
Adrenaline gave him more energy and the cold water seemed to shock the overwhelming darkness and Obi climbed to the surface of the water, only to be thrashed right into a rock. The ringing started again in his ears, this time the cold water did nothing as the darkness slowly over took him. Finally giving up his struggle, he closed his eyes, trying to remember why it was important to open them again. Finally he passed out completely.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,true][atrb=cellPadding,0,true][atrb=width,467,true] | [atrb=background,http://i600.photobucket.com/albums/tt87/Tye-Lily/Comissions/tobiasbg2.png]Tobias followed his brother, his concern increasing with every shaky step. He tried to position himself as a buffer between Obi and the edge, but the small ledge wasn’t wide enough for them to walk next to each other. When Obi stopped again, Toby kneaded the ground nervously with his paws. He had no idea what he could do to ease his brother’s pain. He felt utterly useless, but knew that all he could do was be supportive and prepare for the worst.
Obi coughed violently and the smell of the vomit filled the little tunnel. Obi wasn’t going to be able to walk to the dens. Tobias tried desperately to think of some alternate plan, something he could do. But then Obi stood and staggered, and the decision was made for him. Tobias was in the water immediately after his brother, almost as if the two had been linked together and fallen in as one.
When he had first heard Obi yell about the river, Tobias had assumed that it was going to come to this. He had explored the tunnels in the den area pretty thoroughly, and he couldn’t remember any area with a wide ledge like this one. He had hoped he’d just missed it and that they could walk safely home, but he had suspected that it wouldn’t get them all the way there. The far more dangerous tacit he had assumed they would have to take would be to ride the angry river and hope that it dumped them somewhere near the dens. It had been a suicidal thought then, and that was before he realized the extent of Obi’s injuries.
The water stung his burns and blurred his vision. If he had hesitated at all, he probably wouldn’t have been able to find his brother in the murky rapids. He fought his way to the surface and was relieved to hear Obi gasping for breath beside him. He paddled closer and reached out a paw toward his brother, just in time for it to be sandwiched between Obi and a large rock. There was a flash of pain and Toby inhaled a bit of water in surprise. His mind dulled a bit from the intense pain. As most rational thought drained away his mind focused on his brother; he had to save Obi.
Kicking with his three useful legs he dove under the water. Trying to move with the current rather than against it he positioned himself under Obi. He kicked with all of his might, pushing up on his brother with his back. Slowly they rose to the surface. They broke the rough waters and Toby gasped for breath. Obi’s head was resting on top of his back and he prayed that his brother was still breathing. He thought he might have heard him cough lightly, but it was hard to tell over his own coughing and the roar of the river around them.
Before his mind could refocus the river took a sharp turn to the right. He scraped up against the wall, new cuts scraping at his side. He pushed off the wall as best he could, trying to keep them centered in the river. But then he found another rock, hidden just below the surface. His injured paw struck first and he yelped as his vision turned white. Still his legs kicked, and the pair bobbed up and down as Toby felt fatigue sinking in. It was getting harder and harder to support his brother’s weight and keep his own head above water.
Everything was a blur and he lost all perception of time. His legs and lungs burned and his body ached with fresh bruises and cuts. His was dizzy and queasy each time he dropped under the water he got more and more disoriented. His head was too heavy to hold completely above the water now, and he settled on gasping through his nose when it broke the surface. He kept his shoulders stiff, desperately trying to keep Obi’s head above the water. But his brother was so heavy… And he was so tired…
Suddenly Toby noticed that the river wasn’t as deafening as before. He forced his head up. It was wider here, so the current had slowed a bit. And what was better was the smell. The familiar scents of his home drifted through the air. A tiny blip of recognition went off in Toby’s mind. The dens… They had made it. His eyes burned and were nearly useless. He tried to open them, but it hurt and the left one was swollen nearly shut. He relied on his nose to guide him, following the smell as it got stronger.
He brushed the wall with his paw praying to the Great Spirit for some guidance. He reached out his paw again, but the wall wasn’t there. He squinted his eyes and paddled as best as he could into the small inlet. The water gathered in a small pool here. It was familiar, but in a cloudy dreamlike way. Everything seemed fuzzy and surreal. Was his mind playing tricks on him, or did he hear echoes of howling? He kept paddling; he knew that was important. He felt something hard beneath his paw and the water seemed to get shallower. He couldn’t walk with the added weight of his brother, so he just kept paddling until there was no water left to pull them through. Toby collapsed, rolling Obi off of his back as gently as he could. They were both still half submerged in water, but they were home.
He looked over at Obi to tell him the good news. But then he remembered; Obi was hurt. He wanted to reach out a paw toward his brother, but even that was too much effort at the moment. His vision was still swimming and he still wasn’t sure if Obi was breathing. He whimpered slightly. He needed help. He mustered the energy for a long, low, croaking howl. He couldn’t even manage words. He panted heavily and then howled again his call echoing through the caverns.
