In a rare moment of what she deemed was strictly insanity, Oteka had given in to Erena and left the Canyon in favor of traveling south to the Swamplands. It was a dream to Erena, who constantly was making cooing sounds of delight at the smells around them as the weather got warmer. In the canyon it would never truly be cold but it was definitely getting wetter. Winter for the west seemed to mean constant showers, and while Oteka did not mind being wet, she knew Erena was desperate to at least visit a land she would consider to be home.
Now they trudged through the swamp, mud up her legs, soft and soothing on her short pelt. Her underside was usually a bright yellow and cream but now was saturated in the mud. Oteka couldn’t help but smile, she knew she had nearly lost her mind and in one fell swoop had picked up and traveled to the swamp. It smelled like wolves might have inhabited the swamp at one point or another but now, now it was practically empty. There was a scent here and there of someone traveling through, but no consistent smell. For Oteka that was grateful enough, she wasn’t exactly sure how she would handle another passerby, covered in mud with a smile plastered on her bill. Surely she would be considered insane.
Erena was full of her usual happiness, complimenting Oteka, and being completely friendly. That could be in essence because she was getting exactly what she wanted and did not want it to end. But Oteka chose not to think about that at this particular time. Her dark chocolate eyes laid on a patch of what seemed to be fresh mud, and she couldn’t help but stretch out of front legs until she plopped belly first into the mud. She began to roll in the slow, sticky wet earth, grunting and making gentle sounds. Her beaver like tail slapped the mud a couple of times just because she could. Then as she sat up she turned her head to each side to see if anyone was around or watching. Not that it would have entirely stopped her but she wanted to be aware.
She noticed that she was near the water, and even though it was murky it looked delightful, with the winds blowing ripples along the water, and through the trees that sprouted here and there, and grasses and flowers that floated on the surface. With a contented clack of her bill she slid into the water and webbed paws began to paddle back and forth to send her through the water. It may have been murky but it removed the mud from her pelt, and sliding along the grasses only furthered to clean herself. It also provided her an excellent opportunity to scour the bottom of this canal for something to eat. Rooting around with her bill she was afforded plenty of meal grabbing opportunities, and decided to once again indulge herself seeing as she had gone lightly on eating since she had left the canyon.
When she surfaced again, a flower had ensnarled itself onto her head, and tilted to the side like an off keel hat. Her tongue lolled out of her beak for a moment, before cleaning the sides of the bill. Oteka was for once enjoying the peace that came with satisfying Erena, even if it meant going against everything that she naturally knew to be right for a wolf. Once day she would have to come to the conclusion that she was not strictly a wolf. She was part platypus, and the more she denied Erena her urges, the more she was hiding that other part of herself, becoming less than what she was made to be. In this moment of sheer insanity, it all made sense, but no one not even Oteka knew how long this insanity induced logic would prevail. [/scrolly] | |
