The afternoon was beginning to set the jungle steaming with heat and a little humidity. For the winter it was an oddly warm day, and the dryness was noticeable as well. For the creatures of the jungle, they knew it was time to find water if they wanted a pleasant evening. The chorus of calls from birds reminded such beasts that the coast was clear of predators for the time being. Soon the vegetation moved aside as the gentle tromping of hooves came closer to the fresh water pool.
A small herd of unicorn pushed their way down a game trail. There was one great gold stallion, a few alabaster and ebony mares, and a handful of different colored foals of varying ages. The stallion snorted and stamped a great hoof to announce that he would keep watch over his herd while the females and young drank their fill. Two of the dark foals were play fighting, pointing their half formed horns at each other and whinnying playfully.
The mares and youngest began to drink. The mothers of the playing foals seeming to ignore their young for a moment. One mother though seemed very nervous. She was a new mother, and her foal had been late this season. The tiny gold foal was only a few months old and had a nub of a horn. It drank happily then tried to go play with the older dark foals. It's mother nipped a reprimand and pushed the baby away from the rambunctious youngsters.
The stallion, not seeing any immediate danger finally dipped his head to take a long drink of the cold water. His tail swished back and forth, and his ears were constantly moving. Something moved in the bushed behind him and he quickly turned around to face a potential threat. The sudden movement made the nervous mother panic and shove her baby away to run a few feet away from the herd. Some of the other mares balked and shied, but then the looked at the jumpy mother with her small foal and snorted.
The little gold foal huddled close to his mother, waiting for her to give him the all clear. The mother snorted, as if she was trying to play off the false alarm. She began grazing on some low vegetation, trying to calm herself down. Her foal, feeling more secure began to walk toward he two sparring foals, watching their game with intense interest. He watched his half siblings play and tried to join in.
