Hawktalon carefully placed a paw in the thick mud. This whole place disgusted her. Filthy puddles of stagnant water covered deadly sinkholes, threatening to consume those not on their guard. A sucking, squelching noise emitted itself from around her paws as she splashed through the wet earth. She shook her head as the mosquito's bit at her eyelids and ears. A bird chirped happily in the treetops. Disgust filled her. The animals here were so gleeful, while she was soaking with mud up to her shoulders. As she ventured deeper in, she heard a gurgling cry. A shadow of a grey-blue wolf appeared in the distance, and a low moan echoed through the wetlands once more. Now moving at a faster pace, she approached the sinkhole where the black wolf was stranded. Hawktalon gently nosed its cheek, hoping she wasn't too late. The wolf coughed up muddy water, foam collecting at the corners of its muzzle. Grabbing its foreleg, she dragged it out of the relentless pull of the quicksand-mud. the wolf slowly heaved a breath and stood on four shaky paws. It looked gratefully up at her. "Thank you, you will be rewarded for this. I promise." The wolf turned, then howled three long notes. With a last glance at Hawktalon, it ran up into the trees, then dissappeared like dew on a hot day. Startled, Hawktalon stepped back, then ran off. And up in a distant forest, a black wolf was silently watching.
