Summer grasses rippled in the sweet summer breeze. The fireflies danced in the air, making patterns in the night sky, seeming to appear as falling stars. Hawktalon sniffed the air, feeling a cool breeze fall across her ears. She could scent the jackalope prancing about in the wildflowers. The world was peaceful, calm, and quiet.
But Hawktalon knew better. Danger lurked nearby, the night was too quiet, to still to be safe. The lone wolf that attacked her as a small pup seemed to come from nowhere, and from experience, she knew this danger was also invisible. She could feel the waves of fury radiating from everywhere, overwhelming her. Lowering her body into the grasses, she peered over their tops, scared and excited. A fight was brewing, and she knew it was closer than ever. Then, the storm broke. An earsplitting roar thundered dangerously through the air, shattering the peaceful silence. Rattled and fearful, Hawktalon let out a shriek to warn the other wolves in the area to flee. She turned tail just as the dragon appeared over the rise, bellowing furiously. Steam poured from its nostrils, and a lick of fire came out. Its eyes glowed from an internal fire, seeming to make it all the more ferocious. The dragon's whip-like tail lashed angrily back and forth, as it searched for its prey. A flash of white flew out of nowhere, nearly blinding all within eyes range. The unicorn was here...
Hawktalon stared, unable to move, petrified. Jackalopes fled in every direction. The dragon shot fire from its throat, filling the air with raging heat and anger-scent. Hawktalon fled finally, kicking up dirt behind her. The dragon snorted, hissing in confusion. Then, it gave chase. Hawktalon knew it was after her; she could feel it's hot breath burning at her ruff. The very ground shook under the animals huge feet, making the scene all the more terrifying. The air was split by a loud, pained roar. The dragon stopped short. Hawktalon dared a fleeting look backwards. The unicorn's horn gave off a silvery sheen, then exploded in a burst of light. The sky was filled with sound. Titanic screeches, hot fumes, loud, painful noise. When it cleared, the unicorn lay there, dead, beside the dragon. The scaly beast was burning. Hawktalon didn't care about her attempted killer. She slowly sidestepped the dragon's body and approached the unicorn. The magnificent creature now lay, bloody and broken, splayed out on the fields of the valley. For a reason she herself did not understand, Hawktalon let out a vibrating howl from her maw, almost a hum. Maybe she was mourning, maybe she was forgiving the dragon, maybe she was simply howling, showing the animals what the world here could do, just by a simple mistake....
