Zirith swam down the lazy river, pausing occasionally to inspect some fish he encountered. Although he had been living in lakes and rivers in the past year or so, he still hadn't gotten used to the lifeforms that shared the waters with him. But he was eternally thankful that there weren't many things that could hurt or kill him; save for the weird scaley things with large teeth that lurked under water with nothing but their black eyes peering out of the water.
His dark purple-blue scales shimmered as he broke the river's surface to take in a deep breath. Even though it was Autumn, this day seemed to be unusually warm. Zirith feared it was the calm before the storm. Anytime the sea was doing something unusual, it usually meant that something bad was going to happen. The last occassion had been a Tsuname that washed him ashore. He been stuck on land for nearly a week before he was able to dislodge himself from fallen trees.
He floated with his head above water for a few minutes, looking at his surroundings. From his viewpoint the only thing he could see was the dirt banks. Then, suddenly, he heard a weird chirping sound. Immediately his ears perked up and widened, maximizing his ability to hear.
Zirith tilted his head in confusion. What was making that noise? It was like nothing he's ever heard before...
Using his powerful tail he quickly brought himself to the bank of the river- and now for the hard part of getting up. With a deep grunt Zirith shoved his paws into the dirt, digging his claws in the best he could. Once he felt like he had a good hold with his paws, he dug his tail into the side of the bank; then, with a quick shove-and-pull he hoisted most of his body onto the enbankment.
Whilst he was wiggling his way onto the bank another chittering voice spoke up, so now there were two of them invading Zirith's ears. He frowned at the grass on the enbankment, as if the dirt and mud weren't bad enough now he had to fight with whatever was hiding behind the grass. For all he knew, there could be a fifty foot drop behind the tall grass. That was an exaggeration, but it held some truth.
"I'm already halfway out, it'd be pointless to go back now." He mumbled to himself in the gutteral grunts of the Cael, slowly dragging himself up the bank.
By the time he reached the tall grass, Zirith's forelegs were shaking intensely and were moments away from giving out on him and making him tumble backwards back into the water. "Almost...there...." With one last shove from his tail, Zirith tumbled through the tall grass and rolled down a slight hill.
He landed at the bottom with a soft 'thud', his tail landing on a branch and making it snap in half. The sudden sound made him yelp and look around warily. It took him a moment to realize it was him who had made the sound. He shook his head and chuckled lightly.
He heard a similar sound to his left. He turn his head sharply, his blind eye glaring blankly. That's when he saw the cause of the chittering. There were two...rabbit looking things with horns. He stared dumbly at them, and they at him. Apparently, neither creature had seen the other before, and all were too confused to be afraid.
Zirith glanced at his tail, it was still too moist to turn into legs. "Please not think me eatable!*" He called to the rabbit-things, using the common wolf-speak that he was terrible at using. Not that it really mattered, the rabbit things simply looked at each other and chittered some more. Were they talking?
The two rabbit-things chittered a few more times before hopping away into some nearby trees, abandoning Zirith who was forced to simply lay there and wait to dry. "What the heck were those things?"
((Zirith has a speech impediment, since he's lived in the ocean his whole life. Common wolf speak is difficult for him so here's what he means to say; *Please don't think i'm edible))
