Dust wandered the murky depths of the sweltering swamp, leaping over fallen trees and sloshing around in the mud. She couldn't have cared less about the unnatural weight of her stomach, since she didn't care much for babies. They were squirmy and annoying and now she'd have a few of her own.
If I ever see that crooked smile again... she thought bitterly. She hardly thought of it as her fault (although it half was) and was in a rather bad mood, as reflected by her outright mistreatment of her semi-swollen stomach.
"You'd best never cross my path again, Poseidon," she spat.

"Crap!" Pos yelled as he trudged by Dust in the swamp. He hadn't seen her, and he was pretty sure she had heard him. He hadn't realized what he had done to her, and he knew something was going to go wrong. He tried to run away, but the sludge was to thick. "Dang," he said.
He was just climbing up a tree trunk when he heard her say "I better not see you again, Poseidon." He scurried up the tree trunk, and then slipped and fell. He struggled, but only made it worse. Quicksand!, he thought. He was doomed.

Dust saw the ginger wings and didn't need to look twice to know who it was. She ran at the form, eyes blazing, teeth bared. She was all set to tear Poseidon to pieces.
"Crap!" she heard him call as he attempted to run from her. Crap was right, and the male was in a whole lot of it in Dust's mind. She wanted nothing more than to sink her teeth into his neck and shake him like a rag doll.
"Poseidon you baka!" she howled as she charged.

Pos was sinking further into the qucksand, and his only chance for help was Dust, who was trying to kill him. Why me... thought Pos as he sank into the oozy sand. The world was going dark, and he only had one chance.
"Please help me, Dust! I'm so sorry, I'll help you raise them, just help-!" He was cut off as only his paw was dangling in the air. Please help me, Dust, he thought as he sunk into oblivion.

Dust stopped short as Poseidon began to sink below the surface of the sand.
I was so looking forward to killing him myself, she thought with regret. As Poseidon sank lower and lower, he began to ask for forgiveness. Dust listened with pleasure as he made promises to be a good father, as he told her he was sorry.
"Sorry doesn't cut it, Gingerwings," she snapped.
Poseidon sank lower, and his cries were choked by sand. Dust laughed bitterly, although she felt bad for the wolf. She sighed with regret.
Anyways, I'm not done with him... she thought as she picked her way gingerly through the swamp to the sinking Keiyou. She took his paw in her teeth, biting deep on purpose, and digging in her paws as she pulled Poseidon out.
As the Keiyou's head appeared, Dust let go and growled
"Swear it! Swear you'll be a good father and I'll pull you all the way out!" she thought a moment, "Swear it with you're blood and your life and I won't let you sink again!"

Pos gasped for air and howled. The pain was killer, but he had promised, and he didn't break promises. "I will, I will! Please stop! AAAAUUUUHHH!!!" He howled. This was just his kind've luck. He really needed to get consent with the person before doing this again. He knew he was going to have a rather large scar, but at least he was alive.
"Please! Let me live!" Pos was losing his mind in the hot, humid swamp, and a big dragonfly landed on his nose. He sneezed and it flew away. "I'll do anything! I promise!" He knew he was going to regret this later. Maybe I'll get to name one of the puppies, he thought, suprising himself. He was known for focus during emergencies, not randomness. Oh well. Pos was flailing about and sinking more than ever. His head was almost under again, and he had heard bad stories about quicksand. It was his irrational fear that wasn't so irrational anymore.

Dust grabbed his paw in a gentler grip, believing him, then pulled the frantic wolf back onto the solid (though still wet) ground. She smiled at the fear she had seen it his eyes. Power was an intoxicating thing, and, as a loner, she didn't get to excersise her abilities often.
Dust gave Poseidon a friendly punch on the shoulder (although it was by no means gentle) and grinned.
"Hey, no hard feelings, right?" she asked in an unusually cheery voice. Her eyes still burned fiercly, so her next words shouldn't have come as to much of a surprise:
"Besides, I couldn't let the quicksand kill you, that would be to easy," the she-wolf's eyes hardened, "I plan to kill you myself, and it will be much more painful than suffocating."
Dust laughed cheerily and waved a dismissive paw.
"But more of that later, you promised you'd be a good father. How do you plan to do that?"

Pos rubbed his shoulder after Dust puched him and answered her question. "Well, I plan to stay with you as much as I can, and to hunt for you and for the pups, and to take care of you." Pos had been wondering the same question himself, and was suprised with his own answer. "I promise." He said with the usual crooked smile. "And you may want to rethink killing me, because I can get some spoils you'd never find." He was still smiling, and he grabbed the Jazu berries.
"These are my favorite fruit, the Jazu berries, and the are the ultimate treasure. Here, want me to prove it?" He held them out, and ripped the stem in half. He set them on the ground, and slid the left ones towards her.
"These are yours. Try them, he said with a smile, and he waited to see if she would dignify with a response.

Dust sniffed the berries, contemplating Poseidon's offer. Hunting, protection, and the odd Jazu Berries. She took one up in her mouth, chewing thoughtfully and then swallowing. They weren't her favorite, if only because Poseidon liked them, but they were enough.
"I prefer jackalope," she sniffed distainfully, "but this works,"
Dust thought about the whole "murder" thing, licking her paw absently as she did so. She could wait until the pups could care for themselves...
Dust turned a (hopefully) unsettling grin towards Poseidon. ''
"I suppose that if I haven't killed them all by generally not caring they're even there, I may as well take what help I can get," she said, her pointed teeth flashing.
This doesn't change anything, she thought.
Dust was about to say more when a sudden thought occured to her.
"Are you... part of a pack?" she asked. As tempting as free food and protection was, there was a barrier she wouldn't cross, a boundary line that she would never dare step over.

"Yes, but I will leave them and stay with you for however long you need me to." Pos replied. He hoped that she would accept this, and he smiled his crooked smile. He had a question, and now was the time to ask. "I won't let anything happen to you."
Pos felt his heart rate rising, the wet ground under him soaking his paws with water and mingling with the blood. He asked the question. "Will you be my mate?" He asked quickly. He started getting lightheaded, and the humidity didn't help. He bit his lower lip, like he does when he's nervous.
That would change everything, you know, the last little speck of logic in his consciousness said. I know, I know! He started arguing with himself. He was about to explode with impatience when he suddenly felt calm.
"So, what do you say?" He hoped yes, but he also hoped no at the same time. He was loyal to her, but he was also loyal to his pack. It was a Loss-Win kind of conflict.

Dust turned her head away.
A pack.... she thought sourly, I couldn't...
Feeling a slight shift in her stomach, Dust looked back to the Keiyou. Her pups needed all the support they could get, but this Keiyou, this d*mn Keiyou....
"Sorry, Pos," she said, "But I don't mix with pack wolves. It sorta ruins the whole 'Loner' thing. And if you leave your pack, you can't go back when I try to kill you." she laughed bitterly, "And I will kill you, you baka."

"I don't care. If you need me, call me." Pos knew it was heartless, but he had no choice. He couldn't convice, that stubborn she-wolf. He flew away, leaving her be.
