Oscar had been trotting along merrily for a wee while now and he was beginning to wonder if he was going in the right direction. He knew there was a pack around here somewhere: the scent of other wolves was on the wind.
He stopped, cautious, as it was clear the small tract of forest had ended and there was open space just a hundred feet or so away. He would be exposed and visible for miles around. A wolf that has travelled a long way does not generally like to be exposed. However, Oscar figured that he was looking for a new pack and needed to be noticed. Enough hiding: it was time to, as his dad would have said, "man up".
Cautiously stepping out of the forest, the small wolf found himself in a vast flowery grassland, innervated by a winding river. There were ducks on the river which of course swam towards him, in the irritatingly cocky way that ducks do when they want a wolf to know that it has been spotted. Oscar pricked his ears and grinned at them to let them know that he wasn't hungry anyway. He trotted over to the river, every sense alert, and lapped at the water. He was thirstier than he'd thought. White-tipped ears flicked every which way as he drank. Thirst satiated, Oscar sat down and enjoyed the half-mast autumn sun on his back as he wondered if anyone knew he was there.

Part of the river in this meadow branched south toward the Valley in which the Children resided. From the fork a shape was swimming up stream, coming out of the valley. A few frightened fish leaped out of the wake of the larger form. Soon the cold water's glassy surface broke as a head came out of the river, in her jaws a wriggling fish. The head belong to a young wolf, her pelt light gray with pink and brown speckles that seemed remarkably similar to the fish in her jaws. Brown eyes were alight with triumph as she steered herself toward the opposite shore, unaware of the strange lupus near by.
She pulled herself to shore to reveal her very strange body...her paws were partially webbed, her tail thick and heavy, almost reptilian. And on her back pinned tightly to her sides were leathery webbed wings. She opened them to aid in her drying. One opened fully showing the sleek and dragon like wing, the other was stunted, crumpled deformed. It was half the size of the good wing. She shook out her pelt, it was drying relatively quickly considering her heritage. A ghost of a smile was on her face as she ripped into her hard earned meal.
"Swimming up stream is harder....however the fish do not quite know what to do. Practice swimming more. Rely on tail and paws instead of wings...." Her voice was like a bell, she was speaking to herself, but speaking as if she were logging all the words away in a scientific journal. This was an experiment for her and it proved successful.
She paused mid bite, her nose twitched. She realized finally, that she was not alone. She snapped her wings back to her sides in an attempt to conceal her deformity. Slowly she turned, her eyes gazed across the river at the lupus that no doubtingly had been watching her since she surfaced.

Hearing a noise, Oscar looked down towards a fork in the river. A she-wolf had caught a fish. He had never seen a wolf swim in a stream to catch a fish before - his friend Stone who had been able to control water used to dry out a part of the river, leap in and catch all the fish but that was not the same as swimming. Oscar watched, curious, head cocked on one side, one ear flopping forward.
The wolf began talking to herself and he wondered if she knew he was there. She was happily eating her fish now and he felt a little awkward. Finally she obviously smelt him and folded her wings, an odd response. Wait...wings? A wolf with wings? What creature was this, and what land had he found himself in now?
His ears flicked back, then forward again. He had no idea what to do: the animal did not act like an enemy but he knew nothing about what she was. Finally he just decided to do what he always did: be polite and friendly and hope that the other will be the same.
"Good afternoon," he said, a half-smile on his face. "And congratulations on your catch."

Her ears flattened as he smiled and spoke to her. She cringed at his voice, fearing the worse as was her nature at this point in life. Only one had truly been kind to her in her short life, most others avoided her or insulted her. Especially her father. She strained to hide her wings against her sides, trying to make the normal one just as small as the crumpled, deformed one.
She down cast her eyes and lowered her body meekly, all self-confidence gone in the presence of a stranger. She was glad that the body of water was between them, keeping her from potential harm. However, he did not seem aggressive. She glanced at her half eaten fish, then back at her unsightly paws. "Um...thank you." Her soft voice barely carried over to the larger male.
She took a moment to smell the air....she had crossed out of her pack territory. She was in more danger than she thought. A loner was speaking with her. Father and Reynard had no doubtingly already passed this area for their daily patrol. She could smell the fresh marks. They would not be around to chase of the danger of a loner, even if they did value Skyler.
((OOC: I just noticed that your profile gender does not match the gender of the wolf. Please change it to male so it matches your wolf))

The she-wolf winced as Oscar spoke to her, as though his words hurt her. He looked bemused at this, as well as at what a strange looking creature she was. Was she even a wolf? She was acting very subordinate, obviously the youngest or least dominant of her siblings. She must be a pack wolf, or have had a pack recently. Perhaps it was down to her wing: it looked as though she was trying to hide the fact it was smaller than the other wing. As if Oscar cared: he had no wings at all.
"Don't be like that," Oscar said. "I'm in no position to hurt anyone. I'm looking for a pack, which means I have friends to make and it would be most foolish of me to make enemies insead." He looked at the wolf's fish. "You should really eat that, since you spent so much energy trying to get it. Afterwards, if you feel like it, you might explain to me whether or not you are in a pack." He lay down, crossing his paws, still facing her but wanting her to know he wouldn't go any closer. "You might want to describe how an hypothetical loner, for example myself, would be able to see about perhaps being of some use to your pack." He beat about the bush, not wanting to seem presumptuous. "But first...don't let me keep you from your meal."

She looked at him warily, he said he wasn't going to hurt her. Could she trust him? She was at least glad that there was a river between them. Her gaze went over her shoulder to her fish. She was hungry. It took a lot of energy to catch that fish. She looked back at him then stepped back over her food, facing him, to finish her small meal. It didn't take long to eat, she minded the bones.
Her ears came up slowly as he spoke to her. He was asking about her pack, well her father's pack. She looked back at him, she liked the way he spoke perhaps she could have a conversation with out running the risk of being yelled at. "If...you want to join the pack..." Her bell like voice was soft, unsure. " You need to talk to Reynard....or Draugur." She put her father at the end, she was unsure where he was at the moment. She had seen Reynard more often then her father lately.
She finished her meal and kicked some dirt over the remains, the sun caught on her stray scales now and then. Her fur had dried at this point. The river was relatively calm, so communicating across it would not be too difficult. She sat at the edge of the water. "I don't know what we need...maybe more hunter since winter is getting harder." She was a little more confident with the natural buffer. She did not raise herself to high though. If he joined the pack, he would automatically outrank her.

(Sorry for the slow replies, I have a lot going on at the moment)
Oscar listened as the shy wee wolf spoke. She was very unsure of herself indeed. There was an eerie beauty in the way the scales shimmered faintly in her fur.
"Thankyou for the information," he said politely. "I would be glad for any rank really. I am quite good at hunting, now that I have been a loner for a while. Do you know where Reynard or Draugur is?" He leaned in a little closer, looking around to ensure nobody was listening in, and whispered. "And which one do you think would be more likely to let me in?" He grinned cheekily. "Hey, I never caught your name. Mine's Oscar."

((There is a pack meeting that you can join as well, might get a chance to actually meet Reynard there, lol))
Skyler bit her lip a little when he looked at her. Sure she had just hit adulthood, but she was not confident with herself or her newly formed adult shape. She gazed over the river at the lupus.
"Your welcome....I can't give a rank. I don't know where fa--where Draugur is. But Reynard most likely passed by here earlier today." She looked toward the border of the pack and then at the sun, gauging the time. Her ears flickered a little when he started whispering. It was hard to hear him over the moving water that separated them.
When she did hear she could not help but smile at his little joke. It was a smile, shy smile, but a smile none the less. She seemed a little surprised when he asked her name, "Oh...um, I'm Skyler." She once again tried to figure out where she was. It seemed that he was actually closer to the border than she was.
"I can take you there...to the pack lands...if you want."

((Excellent, yes I found it. Shall we continue there, after your next post or even after this post?))
Skyler, eh? Well Skyler was a very shy wee wolf indeed. She seemed to have no confidence at all. Oscar quite liked this quality in wolves: he preferred the quiet ones rather than the in-your-face, aren't-I-brilliant ones. Although there was a difference between the quiet and stupid ones and the quiet, thoughtful ones. He hoped Skyler was a thoughtful one. She certainly seemed troubled. She wouldn't come out of the water to see him even when she obviously couldn't hear him well. Strange, he thought. She was obviously a different species of wolf: one that was good at swimming and even had some scales. So why wasn't her hearing adapted to the water? He had to find out more about this strange new type of wolf. Then she smiled - it seemed a smile of understanding but it could just have been polite. Perhaps he'd ask Skyler later about her kind, but not now - for she could for all he knew be the last of her kind, and it might be painful for her to talk about it. As he thought, he absent-mindedly plucked some gravity from the water, putting it instead on the grass. The grass flattened itself and made a shallow bowl and the water rose a little, forming a sort of bowling pin shape out of the stream. He sometimes fiddled with gravity when he was thinking or nervous, in the same way some wolves nibble their tails or wash themselves.
"Why do you keep saying "fa Draugur""? He asked her, curious. The gravity replaced itself as he was distracted. "Is that a sort of title he has been given?" Well, it was a strange new kingdom in which Oscar found himself. He had to find out a little about the culture.
"I'd love you to take me to the pack lands, if you can...but would that involve you getting out of the water? I don't want to make you uncomfortable." It was sort of a joke to himself. It was probably just that she was so shy she didn't want to come near him, but it seemed as if she just didn't want her paws to dry out. But maybe that was a thing with her species...maybe their paws always had to be underwater. He smiled at her in a friendly way. There was an awful lot for him to learn in this world. The more he learned, the more he understood that there was so much left to learn. He stood up slowly, ready to go when she was. "I'm Oscar, by the way," he said, remembering that he hadn't introduced himself properly.

(( You can post there as well as here. We allow liquid time as long as the threads to not contradict one another.))
She watched his power curiously. She knew lupus had powers, but she had never really seen one quite like that. It was strange really. His question almost startled her. As far as she knew she had only fumbled over Draugur's name once. Of course she met the one wolf that would pick up on her misspeaking. He seemed very curious, she was not sure she was that comfortable with it yet. "His name is Draugur. I misspoke. He's the High Chief"
There was a very slight defensive note in her soft voice. She didn't want to tell a stranger that she was the daughter to the pack leader. Especially since Draugur barely acknowledged her existence. To him, she was a grotesque monstrosity. To add insult to injury, she was the only living offspring he had produced at this point.
His next statement...was it a joke? She had no way to know for sure. She looked down and around her. She was not in the water. Merely on the other side of the small river. However the river rocks around her could occlude his vision enough to make it seem that she was. He did see her come out of the water. She was mostly dry by now anyway. All these thoughts aside, she did not correct him.
"It's fine....just hold on a second." She made double sure that the remains of her lunch were properly disposed of. She carefully stepped back into the cold water, fording across so she could guide him. Once across she slipped out of the water effortlessly and shook her pelt dry once more. She made sure the side with her good wing was facing him. She was ashamed of her deformity, which was the main cause of her self-conscious nature. She felt like he was staring at her. To be honest....she was used to that at this point in her life.
"Nice to meet you Oscar." She finally spoke, making sure not to make eye-contact as per her rank. "The pack lands are not too far, and I can take you to the dens easy enough." She knew her way around the lands, she just kept to herself most the time.

(Great, wow I've never been on a boards with liquid time before)
Hmmm... Draugur the High Chief? Oscar wasn't sure why but he sounded like a formidable bloke. He raised one eyebrow when she stated this title and looked impressed. However on the inside he was wondering if her defensive tone and Draugur's position of power had anything to do with how shy and insecure she was. She also kept trying to hide one side of her from him - perhaps from a pack injury, or deformity? He didn't want to pry too much, although he was curious. She seemed a delicate wee wolf and she was being kind to him so far, if a little stand-offish.
When Skyler moved Oscar saw she was not in the water after all. Dammit, he thought. Trick of the light. He'd probably confused her a bit with that, but never mind. She crossed the river and dried herself: Oscar jumped back as she shook herself and the sparkling spray flew all around them. There wasn't much water of course. He removed some gravity from it so it floated upwards, waited for her to move so he could dump it back on the ground. Water was quite easy to control. However the gravity he had removed from it had to go somewhere, and he put it on the grass as he had done before. Of course, all this was unnecessary. But Oscar hadn't shown off to anyone for months.
He grinned at her, noticing that once again her mystery side was facing away from him. What a surprise. He wanted to know so badly why she kept hiding it from him! He had seen her from a distance and it hadn't looked so bad, so it mustn't be too massive a deformity. But whenever anything was hidden from Oscar, he wanted to see it all the more.
She avoided his eye contact, although he was still only a loner. Weirdo. He grinned at her, trying to make her feel more at ease. He needed friends and it seemed as though she did too. But she wasn't exactly wearing her heart on her fur.
"Great," Oscar said. "I'm glad they're not far. Shall we offski?" He nodded in the direction he thought they were going...but for all he knew they could be going in the other direction.

She blinked a little and watched the water seem to float away. He was doing that right? She watched the droplets fall to the ground after she moved away from them. She knew lupus had powers...but what was his power? Did he control the water? She remembered the bowl of water earlier. Having no concept of what gravity was, she just assumed he wielded water.
She was trying to remain relaxed, but it was hard. A male stranger. She had never had good luck with the males in her life. Not that there were many... past the leaders of the pack. He smiled at her and she was unsure how to react. At least he was not aggressive. She felt like her thought process had begun to loop around in her mind. She had been willing to try new things this morning, but when she stepped out of her comfort zone, it showed a little.
He spoke to her, bringing her back to reality, "Um...yes...we should." He had looked in the correct direction so she went that way. Her heavy tail drug a little behind her. She kept her leather wings folded tight to her sides. Her ears were flat, she did not know what to say or if she should say anything. Small talk was not a strong point.

Oscar followed Skyler, his head remaining about a foot behind her head. He kept well to the side, a few feet away from her so she would not feel he was encroaching on her personal space. Her tail seemed to be dragging her down a little, but he could not make it lighter: not that he would want to anyway. It would probably freak her out. She seemed freaked out just by being with him.
Oscar was not used to being quiet around people, especially strangers who he was so curious about. He'd just spent months travelling, all by himself, quiet as a mouse. Now he had met someone but still it seemed he had to remain quiet. Was it because she was afraid of him, or was it because they had to be quiet? He did not know and didn't really want to take any risks either. Therefore he stamped on his urge to speak and went into Stealth Mode, thinking seriously and concentrating on the task in hand...which was really just following Skyler.
