Since there has been a little confusion about the origins of the cave and how long the "writings" have been there, I thought that I would explain it. I also want to implement it more in the story if possible, maybe have Skyler become the "Historian" so to speak.
In the first year of the Children's formation (year one of the site as well) Draugur basically raped his mate and injured her in the process. He gave her anterograde amnesia (extreme short term memory loss). She forgot she was raped, forgot she was pregnant, forgot about her pups once they were born. She needed help remembering the things her mate wanted her to remember.
As a result, an old sennyo was recruited to help make symbols and meanings on the walls of a secluded cave. Basically created a language* only the higher-ups knew about.
Since then the cave has become a sort of history for the pack. Though only Reynard can really read it, and only a little, since the others that knew the language have all disappeared.
This is how the language reads and how it is written**.
---Since wolves naturally carry their heads low to the ground, the markings can be read from bottom to top in a line.
---The marks are crude at best. Wolves do not have thumbs or written words. So they are basically pictographs, very crudely done.
--A paw print can mean 'wolf' a series of paw prints 'pack', a nose print 'scent' and so on. I think that they might be able to make a crude "V" shape with two toe strokes to resemble the head of a wolf.
---Berries, mud, crushed or chewed leaves can all be made to create "paint" since wolves are not strong enough to carve stone unless they have yagi horns or a sturdy stick.
So this is the basics. I may edit it as the Skyler learns more, but I just wanted it out there for clarification.
*Only Wolves in the Children will have the opportunity to learn to "read" this language. It is not something that just happens to a passerby, it will take time and tutelage.
**Even fewer will be able to "write" the language. There may be a rank added that will allow the head Storyteller to know how to write and one of the other storytellers will apprentice under him/her to succeed them later in life.
