Name: Oteka
Alias: O
Species: Platypus-Myou
Gender: Female
Age: 4
Pack: Loner/TBA
Rank: n/a
Physical
Height: 35 in.
Weight: 135 lbs.
Appearance:
Oteka is a medium sized Myou with the second soul of a platypus named Erena. Because of her second soul her eyes are a dark color, looking nearly black. Her second soul also effects the color of her coat and even the texture. The top layer is a dark brown with some highlights of a lighter brown to help her easily blend in with mud and dark grasses. On her underbelly is a golden, yellow-cream color which helps her when hiding in sand of a lighter color. Her top coat is waterproof, allowing her to move sleekly through the water and soft environments, the top coat is longer and smoother, while underneath is the heavier, thickly weaved second coat. This is the coat that keeps her warm in cooler climates and warm in the water.
Her paws are webbed and look more like that of a platypus than that of a wolf with claws on the end for scratching, and defending herself. Because she does not have the same power or build of the other species like Yagi, but is not as delicate as others like the Sennyo she has to depend on evasive tactics to defend herself. She would spend more evading and using escapist tactics to lure her enemies into tiring themselves out, or leaving themselves open at some point to sharp claws. Because she does have a bill and not a mouth of sharp teeth her diet is different than most wolves, and because she only has claws to defend herself, fighting is not something she delights in but she will defend herself when she has no resort.
Her bill is a dark blue-ish color with nostril holes on the top allowing her to submerge her body under water and stay under water much longer than any other breed of wolf, besides the famous Cael. Her top coat is generally waterproof, leaving a thicker, warmer pelt underneath to keep her warm in cold winters and climates. Her tail, instead of being a long, bushy wolf tail is a thick skinned, lightly furred beaver tail. It hangs down about half the length of a normal tail, and if much wider, used for making dens in areas high in mud and grass and propelling her through the water.
Her voice seems to lilt and rise and fall based on what type of mood she is in, it is as though she has no natural pitch that just occurs when she is simply being calm, it is constantly changing. The sounds that usually come from her even when she is by herself sound like that of a puppy growling, her platypus second soul plays a big part into how much time she spends and where she calls home, preferring lonely sleeping quarters and much time alone.
Other: She has two small scars on her bill which are whiter in color than the rest of it, standing starkly out against the dark blue-black of her natural bill color.
Mental
Strengths:
* She is very self reliant and self dependent, because of her second soul being a primarily loner animal she has a tendency towards finding ways to be alone even in group settings. Because her second soul is also very territorial she has no problems defending land she considers hers or space she has claimed.
* She is an excellent scout type personality, she is naturally curious and can navigate through many different environments due to her adaptations of her second soul such as the three layers of fur. One includes a layer to trap air to insulate her while in near freezing conditions, a middle layer which works like a wet suit and finally the furs on the third layer which act like sensors to nearby objects hidden from sight.
* With her bill having extremely sensitive nerve endings, she can usually tell when something is close even if her eyes are closed, every animal has a vibration of some sort, when it breathes or moves and with her bill having many nerve endings she can easily sense other creatures, catch fish and swim without bumping into anything even in absolute darkness.
*Because of her tail and webbed toes it makes her an extraordinary swimmer, her toes help to propel her from side to side and her large, beaver like tail keeps her balance even within the water. This ability allows her to swim not only in calm rivers but in turbulent waters as well, even through large bodies of water.
*Her natural intelligence and tendency towards survival make her an excellent, dependable wolf. Because she does not have the gift of large amounts of strength or other viable defenses she has had much time to think of ways to survival without the stupidity of fighting constantly.
Weaknesses:
*Her eye sight is not necessarily the best, however she attempts to make up for it with her sensory fur and her bill full of nerve endings, she can still sense things but her sight has not become a total hindrance as of right now.
* Her lack of “true” teeth and fangs make her diet different than other wolves, and give her one less defense. She has had to rely on her claws and swiftness on land and in water to give her the advantage in a fight. A larger wolf with fangs and other weapons could easily overpower her once they catch her.
* Because of her webbed toes and claws it can make traveling over very rough areas a bit difficult for her because she has to curl in the claws and basically do what is deemed a “knuckle-walk” to move over long areas of rough landscape. This can cause her to spend more time traveling over areas such as mountain ranges.
*She is not socially adept, while intelligent; crowds tend to make her skittish and especially around many dominant, aggressive wolves it tends to make her turn in on herself and stay away as much as possible. She also has security issues when it comes to her physical appearance.
Personality:
If you didn’t know any better you might Oteka was crazy but that is simply not the case. She is just conflicted. The wolf side of Oteka is completely self reliant, independent and happy to be alone. She is proud of every aspect of herself except how she looks physically. As much as she loves the water, she never looks down into it, thinking herself ugly. Her second soul Erena has no such complications. Erena is paranoid and an escapist, there is never any situation too comfortable for her, no situation she cannot run from and this impacts and collides with Oteka’s natural instincts to defend herself.
When it comes to large meetings of animals, especially intimidating, large specimens of creatures put Erena on edge, and Oteka simply cannot help it, but to place herself in situations that make Erena go on the verge of insanity, the constant paranoid chatter of Erena makes Oteka’s skin crawl and her toes curl, but she cannot help but do things to punish her second soul. She will often sport a pained look on her face at having to hear the other voice constantly and argue back mentally trying to irritate Erena. It is an odd combination of predator trying to goad prey and often Oteka resorts to threatening Erena with something, although what she could do never comes in to play.
Oteka has abandonment issues even though she is never truly alone. One would think that she would welcome the noise of another creature to drown out the sounds within her head she actually finds more solace in a crowd to drown out the platypus within. An organized pack structure has never been available to her and so she does not quite understand anything beyond more politeness and even that is thrown away when the mood suits her and she is submerged in her own world of insecurities and bitterness.
Oteka wonders why of all things she was born with a platypus as a second soul. Her parents were beautiful and graceful myous and here she had to be born with what she deemed an ugly and slow creature with bad eyes. Her avoidance of anything reflective gives anyone who may see an inkling of the depression that clouds her mind when she looks at herself.
Oteka is not overtly cruel or bitter, but nor is she an over active, hyper creature as she had run in to during her travels. Happiness-challenged Oteka seems to be in a perpetual grumpy mood. Oteka’s moods are hard to pinpoint but mostly she has a chip on her shoulder if only because she has to deal with her second soul on a constant basis, conflicting with her natural personality and desires. Very few times does she find her own head quiet enough to find happiness, or perhaps when she is tormenting Erena… Oteka is like a log floating downstream slowly, moving her way through life, through water and land, a seemingly moveable object, going with the flow, and smacking into a few rocks along the way, if only for the joy of the pain.
History:
Oteka would be what is considered the ugly duckling of her family. She was born to a mother who was a graceful panther myou and a father who was an owl myou. She had no idea why she was born the way she was, or why she could not have been born with a second soul that had more grace or beauty. When she was born and growing up she always looking at her mother and father’s coats and features that in her eyes made them beautiful, never awkward or ugly. Her mother’s coat was a mixture of beautiful light tan with black spots all over her body, even her tail was long and graceful, to watch her mother climb or hunt made Oteka so happy. Her father on the other hand was white with a few high lights of gray and wings of the most wonderful white and silver. He even had feathers around his eyes and ears. They both seemed so unique and beautiful together that when Oteka first saw herself in a pool of water she cried herself to sleep.
Not only was she not any extraordinary colors like white, black, red or blue. She was a boring, dull shade of brown, with a yellow underbelly. She had no swishy, bushy or long tail, but a bulky beaver tail, and instead of a long, narrow snout she had a bill. While her parents tried to tell her otherwise and encourage her, Oteka began a quiet rebellion against the second soul that resided within her. Even when she was a pup she was quick to enter into wrestling matches and fights with her brothers and sisters, gaining small amounts of satisfaction from the screaming and panic that flooded her mind from the second soul who made itself known as Erena.
Even though the matches began innocently enough without pain or injury involved, it put Erena on edge and paranoid half sentences came through her mind until the creature either exhausted itself or became catatonic. Soon though, innocent wrestling matches and exploring began to isolate Oteka from her siblings and friends. Her affinity for water proved her to be weird, and her ability to hold her breath and hide in the water made her have an unfair advantage. Soon, the other wolves began to slowly avoid her, even her siblings became further away, albeit their descent away from her was slower.
Her resentment for Erena began to grow and she sought out other dangerous tasks and confrontations to punish the poor creature for the loss of her family and her lack of beauty in her mind. When the pups in the loosely knit group began to grow to an age of finding mates or becoming interested in the other sex, once again Oteka was left out of the equation due to her looks. Even though myou breeding was a random thing, no one wanted to take a chance that her second soul would breed true to their offspring, so once again Oteka got passed over for any sort of companionship.
She tried to find solace in her parents, but even they were moving on with their lives, expecting another litter of pups. While they never made Oteka feel bad for staying around, and they were always gentle and kind to her, that always made her feel worse, as though they kept her around out of pity. It would be close to her third birthday right before her mother gave birth to the next litter that Oteka could not take it anymore, and fled into the night.
She spent a few days traveling as far as she could with food or sleep, as if the physical punishment on her body could also punish the soul within who had caused her to lose any chance at a happy life. Finally, she collapsed near a river and lay there for days, barely drinking and eating, hoping that she might find her end. But just before dawn one day she sighed, why should she give Erena the pleasure of a quick and painless end when she had had to suffer nearly from the time she was born into this earth.
With the little strength she had, she got up, drank from the river, and even found a few insects and creatures living in the mud to eat before she shook herself off and decided to begin a wandering journey, not only to do what she had always wanted to do but to bring a little sliver of hell to Erena’s life.
“Settle in Erena, it’s going to be a long road to hell..”
Other: Perhaps hoping that within her own personal transition and growth we might get to a point where there is less hate…but who knows?
