The day was beautiful. Every day was beautiful. ... But especially in the summer, when shiny bugs danced around everywhere, and the plants were big and strong and you could hide in them; and when the hot air roiled up off the land and caught under his wings -- Zan paused, train of thought broken. Where was he headed, again? He'd landed a while ago to hunt; he was famished from a day's worth of flying in clear, windy skies... but... hadn't he seen this tree before? He stared blankly at the trunk for a good while, brow furrowed in concentration. ... No, he'd not seen this tree. He nodded his head firmly, tail wagging in broad sweeps -- now he could focus on whatever it was that he was tracking! Something for his belly, yes... A butterfly passed his face, and he instantly dropped into a play bow. His chest scraped the ground and his ropey tail all but arched over to brush the back of his head. He loved butterflies! With a high bark, he pranced awkwardly after it, crashing through the underbrush like a bear (and falling down quite a bit). After several minutes of chasing, he found himself on yet another section of trail, once more confused as to his location. For a brief moment, he missed his family -- and not even for the familiarity, or the pleasure of knowing the scents that marked the area, but for his mother, who had the most wonderful sense of direction. With a low whine, he forced himself to focus -- he needed food, and he needed to find somewhere to perhaps spend the night. And so, stomach still rumbling, he lumbered down the trail. TAGS-- daci! |
