Lupa ran through the tall, swaying grasses, in close pursuit of a fat little jackalope. The creature was just about to scurry down a hole when a bolt of lightning came down and struck the hole opening, making the jackalope turn around and run away. Lupa quickly caught it, and killed it quickly. She did not really like to kill things, she had killed her fair share of wolves in the past years, and she had even developed a liking to the flesh and blood of a wolf. In fact, sometimes when she met a lone wolf, she had an urge to kill it and take a tiny little nibble. She had however, restrained this urge, and she was disgusted by it. The sunlight gleamed off her short, sleek, silver and purple coat as she munched on the jackalope. Her eyes scanned the horizon for danger, or other animals that would want to take her food. Even with the noon day sun, it was still chilly, it was autumn now, and the prairie was cooling down.
She half wished she had a longer, fluffier pelt, but she imagined the hot summer days and snorted. The smell of ozone still lingered in the air, but she took a sniff anyway. Her powers were dangerous, and not just to others. If she called forth too much lightning, the smell of ozone could block out the smell of predators, and of course, there was always the chance that she could lose control of her lightning. She usually gained control again, but it seemed like just yesterday she had lost half of her tail to a bolt of unruly lightning.
Deciding she should move on, she stretched out and began to walk, her muscles tense from her hunt. She strolled along at a lazy pace, there was nothing to worry her, though her ears remained pricked. Birds twittered in a tree she passed, and she stopped to look up at them. She loved her lightning power, but sometimes she wished she could have a bit more. Some wolves had wings, some had horns, in her travels she had even seen one with hooves.
Don't be silly, she chided herself. You have an amazing power, some Lupuses don't even get them! She nodded to herself, it was true, and she shouldn't forget it. All wolves were different, and unique. She smiled vaguely and continued. The sun was slowly going down, and the air was getting cooler.
She started to pick up her pace, eyes bright and ears up. She found a large den, and sniffed the inside. It had been a long time since it had been las inhabited, and that was good enough for her. She crawled inside, and then came back out. It wasn't dark yet, but it would be in two or three more hours, she had simply wanted to make sure she would have a place for the night. She sniffed the air and suddenly barked in delight. She smelt, however faint, traces of the children! The pack she had been looking for, finally. She had half a mind to go charging forward to try to find them, but her rational side took over and told her not to go. A few bolts of lightning flew from the sky, making charred makes in the ground. Using her power made her tired, and she climbed back into the den.
She slept for about an hour, and as she awoke, the sun had reached the horizon, and made a brilliant sunset. She quickly wiggled out of the den, glad for her small size, and sat down. She watched the sky as the sun set, she was really a sucker for nature's beauty.
