Home, finally. The whisp let out an exasperated sigh, allowing a sense of peace and calm wash over him. He had been wandering through many lands for quite some time now, and to be back in the Valley... It was a gift he happily welcomed. The lands of the Lumera Valley were drier than those of the Swamps he managed to find himself in time after time, so his abnormal need to stay away from water had been tamed for the time being. A strange tug of loneliness pulled at his heart though, as he realized he’d most likely end up alone once more. During all his time as a member of the Children, he had yet to meet a fellow packmate. The very reason he went off to wander other lands was because of his inability to make any contact with those of his pack. But perhaps it was for the better, because the last thing he needed was someone else to think of him as weak and useless and a mere fool to be toyed around with.
A gentle smile grew on his lips as he found himself in the Heimili Forest, a place of true beauty. The world around him seemed to be a less cruel place as he walked through the forest. The gentle breeze felt soothing against his pelt, the winds brushing over it ever so slightly. It was a bit dark, yes, but thin lines of light rained down from the canopy above, giving off a tranquil effect. Maybe being alone wasn’t so bad... The soft whispers of the wind and the brief hush after the leaves rustled, it was something from a fairytale, something he’d remember his whole life. His mother would have loved it, as her heart was gentle and kind, she would have felt at home in the forest just as Clovis did. Another tug of pain and loneliness. It saddened him every time he thought of his mother, as she had given him the best upbringing he could have ever hoped to know. The memories of his father as well brought him pain and longing, the elder Whisp brave as could be and yet amiable and humble. He would have done anything to meet them once more, or at least even know where they are, let alone if they were still alive or not.
The light blue whisp shook his head back and forth, attempting to rid himself of the thought of his parents being dead. This was not a time for sadness, for the day was still young and the sky continued to dance across the sky. Clovis continued to walk through the forest, wings falling loose rather than usually being pulled tight against his body and moved with a little less caution in every step. He had no need to be scared, for what could be so dangerous while lurking in such a peaceful and lovely forest? Nothing, right?

The forest was quiet of all but the sound of Brightness' foot falls. He had yet mastered the art of stealth, which wouldn't matter if the bright golden wolf hadn't been trying to hunt. Something he was, if not terrible, not so good at. Then again he had no formal training on the subject and really shouldn't feel so bad about his lack of experience. If only he didn't need to consume so much. Brightness had realized, in his months of residing in the Children, how much his stomach had grown. He had gone from being an underfed malnourished pup to a full grown Yagi hybrid... a whopping 41 inches of muscle. It required a lot of fuel. Fuel he had to obtain by his own two paws. The task was turning out to be quite a struggle. On top of the fact that he didn't wish to deprive the other members of the pack of food, especially in the winter months.
But a wolf had to eat so Brightness had to hunt. He would never dare take from the pile that the hunters brought for the rest of the pack. The youth had scented a rabbit and was putting his nose to the ground, er snow, and hot on the trail. If only the whole forest couldn't hear him coming. Brightness knew how loud he was being, and he was trying, he really was, to be quieter. So tempted was he to give up, but his stomach growled as a reminder urging him on.
A bit farther and Brightness caught sight of the rodent. It was sniffing around in the snow. Bri took a step closer. The snow and leaves crunched under making him wince. The little thing's head shot up, eyes wide searching for the source of the noise. Hunching down, Brightness stayed as quiet as possible. After a few long moments the rabbit went back to what it was doing. It hopped a few paces away. Bright blue eyes looked around, desperate for a solution to his problem. A breeze trickled through the dense forest ruffling bright yellow and brown feathers. Duh! He had wings.
Tensing, Brightness jumped pushing up once with his wings to propel him into the trees. He grabbed onto the lowest branch of the closest tree. The leaves rustled and the bark scrapped under paw. He hurriedly looked to see if his target was still there. Good, it was still shuffling through the snow. Gaging the distance between him and a closer branch to his prey Bri jumped again and glided to another tree. Now the rabbit was just a leap away and completely unaware of being stalked. An unorthodox way of hunting but it worked for Brightness.
Brightness jumped, aiming huge paws at the bunny. He hit the rabbit alright, and then skidded on the snow, his weight dragging him through a bush and straight into something warm and solid. Oops.

So maybe being alone wasn’t so bad. He could always entertain himself, he’d done so many times in the past, today shouldn’t have been a problem. It’s just that Clovis longed for a sense of companionship but his inexplicable fear to talk to others for prolonged amounts of time and to become attached forbid him of that. He wondered what it would have been like to be of the myou or daja species, never alone and always with someone to talk to. When he was much younger, he did fall prey to talking to himself or imaginary friends, but those like the myou... they wouldn’t have to worry about ever being alone and being devoid of companions. But Clovis wasn’t young anymore and he sure as hell wasn’t a myou, so it would have been silly, impossibly silly, to be seen speaking out loud to an empty audience. It was already quite clear he was physically weak, he didn’t want to be seen as mentally weak as well. Being taken as an insane wolf didn’t seem like much fun, and it was a sure guarantee he wouldn’t be making and social contact with that title. But no one was around to witness... So it wouldn’t have hurt to try, just this once.
The whisp took in a deep breathe, attempted to conjure up a figment of his young imagination, and opened his mouth to speak. But words didn’t flow out of his mouth, no, rather than words and silly nonsense, a sigh escaped his maw instead. The mist from his warm breath quickly vanished in the cold winter air and reminded him of his own bloodlines. A smile tugged at the corner of his lips, and his eyes glinted with the sense of playfulness. Suddenly, this body ghosted to the floor in the form of sea blue and green smoke, only to be lifted into the air once more in a loose silhouette of his former self. The smokey wolf-like form bounded off into a flurry, misty paws making only the slightest of intents in the pale white snow. Clovis continued his little game of one-wolf-tag, ghosting around the trees and grazing across the floor. He eventually came to a rest, building back into a more corporeal figure.
His heart raced and he was filled with joy, a good change of pace from his mood earlier. He needed to let loose more, go back to when he was a child and enjoy life. Clovis let a soft hum fill the air, showing signs of obvious contempt.
And then suddenly he found himself on the ground.
He met the snow with a loud and high pitched yelp, which he soon came to regret when he came to the realization that it was quite similar to the cry of a female. With his face heating up and his brain in full panic mode, he jumped back to his feet, looking like a mess of feathers and fur. He looked at the figure that had run into him with wide and frightened eyes, his body practically shaking. ”W-who a-are.... P-please don’t... k-kill m-me.” He said in a harsh and shaky voice. He was expecting peace, not to be eaten! Oh I don’t want to die today, not today. he mentally cried, dread and horror slowly creeping up his body. This wasn’t what he had been expecting at all.

Brightness' ears twinged at the high sound that followed his tumble. He had hit someone and sent them both sprawling. The words had left his mouth before he could hear the others frightened plea. "I'm so sorry! Really I didn't mean too! I was hunting and I slipped and..... huh?" he ended as Clovis' words sunk in. Brightness got to his feet and shook the snow and leaves from his fur and feathers. Curiously he turned to examine the other to find someone rather unexpected.
Rarely did Brightness find wolves that were bigger than him, though that didn't say much sense he hung out mostly with Lyxxi. But odder still was it to find a wolf larger than him and scared of him. Odder still was how easy it was to knock someone of that size down. He had wings maybe he was a Keiyou, though the coloring was off for one, and Keiyous were light. At least his mother had said.
Bri was torn between snorting at the wolf for his silliness or being respectful and politely backing down. Generally for pack members the latter was his choice. Keep your head low and don't piss anyone off. But this guy.. he wasn't the least bit scary. Heck he was quivering! In fear of Brightness! "I'm not going to hurt you," he decided on politely sarcastic," we're sorta pack mates. Brightness Darkly, but everyone calls me Bri. Resident stray from the Mafia. Generally disliked by all."
The golden wolf surprised himself with that introduction. Normally he would try to hid information about himself. He had added the Mafia tid bit just to see if that scared the guy even more than he already was.
A loud grumble of a complaint sounded from Brightness' stomach reminding him of what he had been doing in the first place. "My rabbit!"He whipped around and dashed back through the bush. He didn't know what he was expecting to find. Maybe he had managed to stun it or something. Nope. Bursting though the bush he was faced with an empty clearing. Brightness let out a loud sigh. So much for his morning. Completely wasted. Turning back he headed back through the bush, getting even more leaves stuck in his pelt. (Honestly weren't these things suppose to loose their leaves in the autumn?) Wondering if the strange male was still there or had run off in his frantic search for lunch.

Fear, always with the fear. Was it so hard for him to be brave, just once? Clovis mentally cursed, irritated with himself and his actions. Still, he couldn’t help but be intimidated by everyone around him. Skinny as a twig and as weak as could be, what choice did he have? He still watched over the other with wide eyes, the other’s rushed apology almost slipping past his ears. I'm so sorry! Really I didn't mean too! I was hunting and I slipped- Wait why was he apologizing? It was usually Clovis doing all the apologizing and self-humiliation... His fear began to slip away as his head tilted to the side, once frightened eyes now showing questioning and sparks of curiosity. The whisp didn’t know what to make of the other’s words, his mouth falling open a bit but no words coming out. Looking over the wolf more carefully this time, he examined him with careful eyes, taking in as much detail as possible. He noticed the wings first, and it made him want to perk up a bit, hoping for a fellow whisp, only to have his spirits quickly knocked down as he remembered whisps where not the only one with wings adorning their backs. Besides, his kind had a distinct aura and presence when he was around them.
So perhaps he was a Keiyou. He had met the winged species one many occasions, but this one... He wanted to believe it, but there was just something a bit off about him. His yellow coat fascinated him, as it was more of an eye catcher compared to his own pale blue pelt. Pulling his wings tight and close to his body he let his gaze fall to the ground, still feeling incredibly intimidated. Clovis was taller though, so why should he have felt so intimidated? Perhaps if he puffed up his feathers a bit, he’d look like he would stand a chance if the other ever decided to start a quarrel between them, but he prayed that the other would hopefully go against that. His eyes perked up when the other spoke up once more, eyes glancing back at him when he said he wasn’t going to cause any harm. We're sorta pack mates. Clovis suddenly noticed the vaguely familiar scent, those that would have belonged to someone of the Children. He smirked at that, amused by the fact that his little wish finally came true.
Brightness Darkly, but everyone calls me Bri. That was an odd name... ”Brightness Darkly...” Clovis said in a quiet voice, as if he was testing the name on his tongue. It was contradicting, and Clovis sort of liked that. His brows furrowed when he heard Brightness say something about the Mafia. He had never bothered with those from the Mafia, though he had met one once, for a brief amount of time. The whisp took in a deep breathe, hoping it would put a temporary end to his little stutter. ”Clovis... Y-you may call m-me Clovis.” Well, that was a failed attempt. He tried not to scoff at the last bit to Brightness’ statement. He couldn’t have been that bad. Yes, he did run into him and it did sort of hurt and scare him shitless, but it seemed like an honest mistake...
He practically jumped when he heard the other exclaim something about a rabbit. His eyes showed questioning once more as he watched the other turn and head back into the bush from which he came from. ”W-wait!” he exclaimed, and suddenly shut his mouth when he realized the words he had said. Clovis wasn’t sure what had come over him, but his brain had decided that his mouth needed to do some talking and he felt like mentally slapping himself. Suppressing a groan, he waited for the other’s reaction.

The wolf was quiet voice saying his name as if he was tasting it was a little unsettling. No one had ever really examined his name. Hell he had never really examined his name. Brightness for the color and Darkly was his mother's surname. Simple as that. He had never really hated his name other than the fact that it related him to his mother and brother. The way this wolf said it made him feel a bit self conscious. As if there might be something wrong with it.
And really compared with a name like Clovis, Brightness wasn't all that interesting. Bri tried to shake off that feeling as he watched the bluish wolf. He wasn't one for talking much it seemed. The stutter was endearing, how many times had Bri himself stuttered? Way too much that was for sure. It was strange to be the one not cowering. A complete role reversal for the huge youth.
"Sorry about that," Brightness said, dejectedly kicking snow as he returned empty pawed and empty bellied, "I was hunting... attempting to hunt."
Bri shrugged his shoulders pathetically. He had missed Clovis' call for him to wait and had been a little surprised that he was still there. After all the wolf had seemed so timid and afraid. At least it was less so now. Bri didn't really know how to deal with someone being afraid of him. At least not openly so. He knew on some level Reynard feared him, but he was pretty sure it was more the potential danger he could bring than Brightness.
"So, uh, nice to meet you Clovis," he said. He was curious about how long Clovis had been with the Children, what was his position. Clearly not a guardian, not nearly enough courage for that. But Brightness held his tongue, he wasn't sure yet how to approach this wolf. He didn't fit any of Brightness' stereotypes. That made interaction with him a little awkward yet strangely Brightness was able to be more himself. Like he was with Kaly and Crow. They didn't judge him for where he came from or what he looked like. Maybe Clovis could turn into another friend. It never hurt to make friends in the Children, especialy with his temporary member status.

Well he didn’t seem very mean... Clovis felt himself relax a bit, not quite as skittish before (though still a bit disappointed when he saw the other leave). He also didn’t seem like the type to play ‘nice guy’, only to trick the poor whisp into being killed, though the Mafia stereotype dared to question that. But Clovis was never one to listen to stereotypes as they tended to be mean and degrading and that was in no way something he wanted to be. He wanted to be thought of as someone who was kind like his mother, and couldn’t even bare the thought of being the cause of someone’s hurt feelings. A bit childish and naive, many would call him, but he just didn’t enjoy seeing other’s sad, let alone be the reason for their unhappy state.
He perked up a bit when he noticed the other had come back, and couldn’t help but give a small smile at his words. So he wasn’t that great of a hunter either? Well maybe he just didn’t get very lucky today... Others would have told him hunting was not of luck, but of skill, but Clovis saw otherwise. It would have been nice though, if Brightness wasn’t an amazing hunter too. ”D-don’t worry, I can’t really hunt that well myself... Small and less scary animals are sort of all I can handle.” A shaky laugh escaped his maw and he felt a bit proud of the fact that his stuttered had lessened immensely. Clovis also particularly enjoyed that his packmate hadn’t abandoned him and felt like he had just conquered the world. It was so often others would find him weird because of his bloodlines and his awful stutter and cast him aside, but now he felt like he was like a pup again. Making friends, starting from scratch, it warmed his heart to think that he was improving his social skills and that maybe, just maybe, he would make a new friend today.
He lacked in that department immensely. He was getting to know two other wolves from the Najiro Swamp, a lyxxus and a keiyou, but he wasn’t entirely sure if they had reached the ‘friend’ stage yet. Hopefully this strange keiyou looking wolf would be easier to befriend. So, uh, nice to meet you Clovis. The whisp’s smile grew a bit at that, pleased that he still hadn’t run away yet or got himself killed. ”Yes, it’s nice to meet you as well, Brightness.” Clovis responded, feeling minor pride swell up in him. This was foreign for him, to be making some sort of friend again, but it was a good foreign, because it gave him the opportunity to be himself once more. Feeling the need to ask and hopefully fight off the awkward that he hoped wouldn’t ensue, he opened his mouth to speak again. ”S-so... How did you end up with the Children?” he asked, and then realized he didn’t want to come off as the prying sort. ”I mean if you don’t mind me asking, that is!” he added in a rushed voice, sounding a bit panicky and worried. Clovis didn’t want to mess up this chance to gain some type of companion, he would have regretted it if he did.

So not a hunter nor a guardian then, what else was their? A storyteller or sitter perhaps. Not that rank really mattered but as Clovis appeared to get more confident around him Brightness could see him being a storyteller. As for the hunting thing, Bri held back a laugh when he said smaller less scary animals. Maybe it was the fact that he had grown up in the Mafia, or tortured as a child but Brightness was more afraid of wolves than he was prey. He could understand fearing dragons, calagrises and the like, but deers and such? Maybe they could deliver a good kick but if Brightness could just sneak up on one he was sure he could take it down. Then again he had his weight and bulk on him. Brightness was quickly realizing that Clovis didn't have that.
The smile that had slowly been creeping across his face as they spoke dropped when Clovis asked how he ended up in the children. Blue eyes dropped to study his paws as the other male stuttered about him not having to. Running into Moonrose the other day had dragged up those old memories and a new found sense of guilt. The scar that mutilated her face was his fault. Sure not directly but that didn't mater. What kind of reaction would Clovis have if he told him the whole story? Fear, rejection? Pity?
Brightness didn't know if he could stand it. Especially pity. He had never been pitied until he came to the Children. It was foreign and made Bri's skin crawl. They didn't know what it was like. They could feel bad about it all they wanted but they didn't understand what it was like. To have a mother who despised you while favoring your brother. To have a brother you had to constantly hide from in fear of being beaten up. Hell hiding from your own pack in fear of being killed and eaten. Always hungry and so alone. How could he possibly explain those feelings to someone? No he didn't want pity. He was alive, he had made it out and no one could take that away from him now.
"I-I," he had to say something though," A Guardian of the Children helped me fake my death. She got injured and I helped her home and just never left." And now he couldn't dream of leaving. He had fallen in love with that spunky spit-fire of a Lyxxus Kaly. Sure he was avoiding her in fear of her rejecting his feelings but he had to stick around in case something happened. To protect her.
"How'd you end up here?" he countered to keep the conversation going. Brightness didn't want to go back to hunting just quite yet after his latest failure.

The moment he noticed the other’s smile quickly fade, Clovis began to regret what he had asked. So he hit a sore spot then? He couldn’t help but panic, feeling rude and inconsiderate. He should have started off with the simple ‘So how are you?’ and not jump straight into more... personal questions. The whisp just felt like he could die already, the thought of losing another chance at a friend, gone. Perhaps he would just give it all up one day all together, become a loner never talking to anyone and traveling constantly. He liked the sound of that. Well the traveling part. The thought of being alone still frightened him in a way. He didn’t want to die alone, he wanted to pass with those he loved and cared for all around him. Perhaps that’s why he was so determined to be kind, so people would remember him and eventually come to love him. They wouldn’t abandon him... Clovis bit back a sigh.
He feared what the other had to say, worried that he would lash out and scream at the whisp. It should have been expected though, he did seem to have brushed on a subject that probably didn’t bring such positive memories. Clovis kept his eyes focused on the floor now, shrinking back ever so slowly, and bracing himself for the onslaught. What surprised him though was the response Brightness gave. A Guardian of the Children helped me fake my death. Why would someone need to fake their own death? Was the Mafia really like how everyone spoke of? Or were they even worse? Someone who seemed as kind as Brightness did, surely shouldn’t have had a need to fake their own death... Clovis opened his mouth to ask more questions, but quickly snapped it shut, not wanting to accidentally say something he shouldn’t have again. It seemed to be a habit nowadays for the whisp; always saying things he shouldn’t. Perhaps that was the issue of not speaking so much, you begin to loose grasp on what is and isn’t appropriate to say...
I helped her home and just never left. A small smile began to play on his lips again. So Brightness liked it in the Children as well then? Well that was nice, and he also seemed like a good person, nothing like those from the Mafia everyone keeps speaking about. ”I’m glad you didn’t leave. It’s very nice in the Valley after all, and everyone here is incredibly kind.” he said, lifting his head to look at Brightness and give him a reassuring smile. ”A-And I look up to the Guardian to helped you, they must have one of the bravest and noblest hearts.” Clovis quickly added. He tilted his head when Brightness inquired about how he had ended up with the Children, and actually had to think about that for a moment.
”W-Well, I’d been traveling for some time, and stumbled upon the Children... The sort of l-let me in.” He replied, feeling a bit sheepish that his story wasn’t as interesting as the other’s. ”I’m not sure why though, I’m not good for much.” Clovis laughed, feeling more at ease around the other wolf each second. Maybe he didn’t mess up quite yet, maybe he really would make a friend today. He would have liked that.

It was true. The Children was made up of very kind wolves. Even the High Chief was nice, he just didn't like Brightness because of the threat he posed to the packs safety. It was true that Nightmare still knew he was alive, and he would have told their mother for sure how he had spotted 'ickle Brightness' at the cove. Bri shivered, the Children were better hands down.
"Yeah, the wolves here are nice. And Moonrose is kindest and bravest wolf I've ever met. Without her I probably wouldn't be here today," he was so lucky to have met her. Without her he would never have met Crow, or Kaly or even Clovis. He would never have made friends. He would still have been that scrawny malnourished wimp hiding from everyone and everything, filled with hate and anger. Sense then he had learned what love was, the good and the bad parts of it.
"I'm sure your good at something," Brightness reassured him,"You just haven't found it yet." Kaly had taught him that. She had thought he had potential to be a strong wolf and good fighter. He hadn't seen it when they first met but now that he had filled out he understood. It was true that his size could be intimidating, though once you got to know him it would only make one laugh, saying Bri was intimidating. To think he was born to the Mafia.
"If your not a hunter or a guardian, what's your position?" Brightness finally asked, curiosity finally getting the better of him. Maybe it could help with finding something Clovis was good at.

It was so rare that a wolf could ever put a smile on his frightened face, usually he would cower and avoid all social contact. It seemed to work best in the long run, avoiding everyone because who knows when they were about to turn on you. Brightness was surely different though. The way he spoke, the words he used, they didn’t seem to be the common attributes of a rude and cold-hearted being. When the name ‘Moonrose’ came up, Clovis tilted his head and his brows furrowed, like he didn’t understand. He never met this ‘Moonrose’ before, but the way the other spoke of her automatically gave him the impression that she was someone with a good heart. ”I have yet to be granted the honor of meeting this M-Moonrose you speak of, but the words attributed to her tell me s-she’s someone of good intentions.” he responded, still feeling a bit sheepish. Honestly, Clovis felt a bit humiliated with the fact that he hadn’t met anyone other than Brightness from his pack, and feared that the other would think him a fool.
”Well I’m g-grateful for what she has done, for I’m thankful for this opportunity to speak with y-you.” He added in a hush tone, his head lowered and his eyes fixated on the ground. Why did he always have to get like that, so flustered and nervous? One day he would just give it up, give up speaking entirely. He was such a fool, an idiot. Of course Clovis meant well, but when he spoke he felt... so weak. I'm sure your good at something, you just haven’t found it yet. The whisps head lifted and he perked up. Never had someone reassured him like that, it was so common to be insulted and thrown around that kind words directed upon him were like the rarest of jewels and near impossible to find. ”Y-you really believe so?” He asked, sounding a bit hopeful. Clovis felt his heart swell with joy, and his eyes shone a little bit brighter.
The whisp laughed a bit when Brightness inquired about his position in the pack. ”Storyteller. I’m just some storyteller for the Children.” he answered. He had nothing against his little job, it’s just he had rarely done anything with it. He constantly just traveled and wandered, never spending much time with pups or doing any proper storytelling. ”S-so what about you? Do you have a position here with the Children?” he asked, letting his curiosity take over briefly.
