The sun was out, the skies clear, the breeze just barely moving the chilly air around. The High Chief stood in the middle of the clearing with his dark wings spread wide, soaking in the sun and attempting to absorb courage. Since the accident he had not been strong enough to move around much let alone fly. Since he was now partially blind he felt that he had been rendered grounded for the rest of his life. Though Satinka and the nurses would not say it, he knew it was what they were thinking every time they looked at his scared face with sad eyes. Being a keiyou, that was one thing he could not accept.
So now he stood in the sun staring at the ground, willing himself to be able to see completely. Yueh could fly...and he was blind. But Reynard knew that something was different about his age old friend, he was blessed by the Great Spirit in many ways to be able to navigate while blind. Rey was only partially blind....surely he could figure it out right? He tried to ignore the times he had run into a tree, or poked his head with some bones while eating. Dept perception was not easy to compensate for. But surely.....surely there was a way. He thought he would wait till the spring to attempt flight again, but he was too stir crazy, felt too confined in being restricted to the earth.
He took a few cautionary flaps, his wings had healed remarkably well. He reared up on his hind legs and gave a few powerful strokes. Bits of snow swirled around the disturbance he was making. However his heart panicked and he set his forepaws back on the ground. He needed some encouragement....or maybe some pupils. He wondered where his children were, perhaps it was time for their first flight lesson.....He grimaced at the thought. How could he teach them to fly if he was too afraid to take off. It used to come so easily to him....now? He sighed heavily and flopped to his rear, scowling at the powdery ground. He took a dark paw and dug a great gouge in the snow to vent some of his frustration. His tail lashed back and forth.
He shook out his pelt and stood up after a few moments of sulking. He needed to try again....Instead of doing it slowly, this time he just jumped into the air, flapping his great wings a few times to get him airborne. He didn't get very high before he opened his wings to glide a few feet. He ended up hitting one of his paws on a rock that he assumed was in a different location. He stumbled with his landing and turned to find the rock that had interfered. His eyes narrowed at the cursed stone. He had miscalculated the distance.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,true][atrb=cellPadding,0,true][atrb=width,450,true] | [atrb=background,http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a190/lilDiablo_/locamid.jpg] Loca had followed the path of her older sister, Angel, as she spent much of her time alone. Some days she knew it wasn’t anything entirely personal…but there were other days when she was the biggest handful she could be to anyone who would be around her, be they sitters, her mother or anyone else. She didn’t understand that she had almost lost her father in the calagris attack, and it had impacted her brother Halcyon as well. He seemed a little more withdrawn, although more mature since the incident. All she had been told about it was that her father had been injured, but her mother and another healer had gotten there in enough time to heal him. No one had told the younger pup the extent of her father’s injuries, perhaps to make it so she couldn’t open up her mouth with one of those…tactless remarks which might be taken the wrong way instead of a pup’s curiosity. But today she had decided to go exploring in the meadow, escaping Halcyon, and definitely avoiding her pain in the tail youngest brother Blaisen. She padded along through the meadow enjoying the warm for once, and her tail swished happily with the weather change, even though she didn’t know it wasn’t permanent.
It was just about then that she saw the black wings, and orange body of her father and she might as well have squeaked in sheer pleasure. She went running down the slope, although not having all her coordination down yet, her wings flapped awkwardly and she yipped in pain as her paw went out from under her and the ground came up to meet her with astounding speed. Suddenly she smelled dirt as it went up her nose, and last minute thankfully she managed to tuck in her wings against her back as the white, silver, and black keiyou pup went flying down the slop to land not even three feet from her father with a loud ‘thump’ and groan. She lay there, stumped for a long moment as to what had happened to her, her vision dizzy and her nose already sneezing to try to eject the dirt that had found its way in. Her tail lashed in temper as tears sprung to her eyes for a long moment, angry and hurt all at the same time. Usually Loca’s moods went from one to the next to the next and she couldn’t necessarily help it but humiliation on top of pain and irritation was just not a good combination.
Her happy mood slightly subdued she pushed herself up on her paws, discovering that mainly she was just dirty, and had a few bumps and bruises. She sniffled slightly between the dirt and the few fresh tears that streamed down her black heart face she looked up into her father’s face and for the first time noticed his one eyes was clouded over and lighter than the other. She tilted her head for a moment trying to figure it out before sighing, and huffing and saying, “What are you doing out here Daddy? Are you hunting? Or are you going on patrol?” She almost danced and twitched in the sheer joy that she might have caught her father all alone, and her wings, now slightly un-tucked flapped in excitement. They were a little uneven, as though she were still adjusting to the weight and length of them, but her flaps were powerful, just as his were. She looked up at him with such admiration in her sky blue eyes and moved closer to try to snuggle into him for a long moment, a low word escaping her maw, “Daddy..”

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,true][atrb=cellPadding,0,true][atrb=width,450,true][tr][tr][atrb=background,http://i453.photobucket.com/albums/qq254/Eldarwen5/Wonder%20Why/Gifts/ReynardSoarTableMid.png] Luckily the act of him turning around had given him a front row seat to seeing his youngest daughter topple down the slope toward him. He was alarmed and attempted to move to intercept her. He had to hide his smirk as she face planted into the dirt though, it was comical, but he had to be a good father and not laugh at the misfortunes of his offspring. Thinking about it again made him recall a similar event with Halcyon falling down. Maybe he needed to work on coordination with his children.
He cooed a little at his daughter, "Aw...are you alright sweetling?" He was proud to see her brave face as she tried to shake off the incident and change the subject. He raised a brow at her questions, "No, not hunting or patrolling actually." He noticed her linger on his right eye, was she just now realizing that it was different from the good one? He figured she would come to her own conclusions about his condition, however she did ask him what he was doing. "I'm learning to fly again...." He gave her a gentle smile, he had at least hoped she knew that he had been rendered grounded for most the winter.
The attack had been physiological too, having a wing broken and an eye taken did a world of damage to a wolf of the sky. His tail flicked back and forth slightly. He was frustrated and agitated that he had to learn again. Yet, his children were about to learn as well. Perhaps he could teach them and regain his confidence on the wing. He just had to get over the giant teeth gnashing hurdle....depth perception.....
His troubled heart absolutely melted when his baby snuggled close to his thin legs. Being a father was probably the best decision he ever made. Her words made him sit down and bring his wings protectively around her, giving her a nice warm hug to shelter her from all the badness in the world. It was hard to think about how much she had grown in the past couple weeks. How much all of his children had grown. He bent his neck down to lick some of the dirt and tears off her face, then he whispered in her dark ear, "Does my little girl want to learn to fly too?"

She stumbled about the snow, tripping over the random things that managed to get in her way. This mostly instituted her wings, for they seemed to like falling in front of her feet or spreading out and catching anything they walked by. The young female's orange pelt had frozen clumps of snow in it, gotten by attempting to catch the little mouse that now lay dead in her small jaws. She hadn't caught it, really, more like sat on it and then bit it before it could limp under a tree. Perhaps wandering about the territory on her own for the day wasn't such a bad idea. She had caught something! Sort of...
She wanted to head back to the camp to show her mother what she had managed to somewhat catch, though she had strayed farther than she had initially thought. She came upon the meadow with a spring in her step, her wings occasionally touching the ground as she went on. Being officially a year old didn't make her an expert walked. In fact, it just about made her more of a klutz. She about fell flat on her face when she saw a massive figure glide a few feet over the surface of the snow, then land rather harshly a ways ahead. Blinking a few times, she stared at the figure before realizing it was her own father. A grin made way onto her face and her tail began beating back and forth. She was ready to bound down the slope after him, but a ball of black and silver beat her to it.
Naomi stared in amazement as Loca, her half sister, came tumbling down the side of the slope quickly after Reynard. Her sky blue eyes stared in wonder when she landed with a thump, yet quickly recovered and asked all sorts of questions. The hybrid felt discouraged to go anywhere near them. She loved her Daddy, she really did, more than anything, but...she despised her half-siblings. They always took him from her, never did she get the chance to spend time with him alone. Little to no time at all, for that matter. She hadn't even known he had ever been attacked. Hurt maybe, but she didn't know more than that. Her mother and her sister were quite the den-lovers. She didn't see them leave often.
Sighing, Naomi sat down where she was and watched the moment between Reynard and Loca. She suddenly felt cold and alone, as well as a little more angry at the younger female. She felt her grip on the mouse tighten a little, the small bones cracking slightly.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,true][atrb=cellPadding,0,true][atrb=width,450,true] | [atrb=background,http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a190/lilDiablo_/locamid.jpg] It was probably one of the few times Loca was able to brush off something, “traumatic” happening to her without falling into a tantrum or episode of some sort. As it stood she was prone to her tantrums, and even though both her parents were busy every one had seen at least one of her episodes where she was crying and screaming one moment, and then laughing and running away the next. Luckily for her, her father remained his serene and calm self and did not feed into the episode she so quickly brushed off. A few swipes of her paw to her face rid her of the tears that had been shed, although it would take a more thorough bath to get rid of the dirt in its entirety. She had no idea that she might be this clutzy for the rest of her life, considering that she and all her siblings were in general always falling over one another to get where they wanted to go. No one had yet told her that all keiyou, even adults were clumsy when the walked due to the weight and sometimes unyieldy size of their wings.
The sheer sound of her father’s voice made her heart beat a little slower, it was always a voice that seemed to calm her no matter what was going on, and she nodded slowly and made sure she took even and small steps from that moment forward, knowing how treacherous the ground was seeming to be in that moment. Her paws even lifted a little higher here and there as if she really didn’t even want to touch the ground at all. He answered her questions, and she tilted her head slightly as he said he was re-learning how to fly….her younger brain had indeed noticed that he had been doing more walking, and she hadn’t seen him take off and fly like her mother had…and she remembered her mother saying something about how would he live if he could not fly, but she had not known he had forgotten how to fly…confusion flitted across her face for a moment, before the simply accepted the statement without question. To her, her father’s word was enough and anything he told her she accepted, it was a little different with her mother, but it would seem her mother would face the brunt of her tantrums, especially with age.
When she was close enough to be enveloped by his scent and his wings, which seemed to bring night to all the area around her, she exhaled as though nothing bad could ever get her. Although her father’s body may have been lanky and lean by some, to her he was the ultimate protector and goodness within the world. Her own wings made soft ruffling noises under his as she buried her head into whatever fur of his she could with small noises of happiness. These were the memories that would burn themselves into the back of her mind and keep her contented for as long as she could hold on to them. Soon though her face was being licked and cleaned, and she growled playfully up at the figure that was her father and yipped when he spoke of flying into her ebony tipped ear. Not being able to help it, she back stepped, still high stepping it as she pushed herself back on her back legs and flapped her wings excitedly, “Yes Daddy I want to learn! I want to be able to fly like you and Mommy!” She had already forgotten that her father was going to have to re-learn as well, but for her she knew he would teach her all he knew…She did not realize, not too far away they were being watched, and her excitement overpowered her ability to smell the scent of her half-sibling…

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,true][atrb=cellPadding,0,true][atrb=width,450,true][tr][tr][atrb=background,http://i453.photobucket.com/albums/qq254/Eldarwen5/Wonder%20Why/Gifts/ReynardSoarTableMid.png]These moments were the ones he treasured most while being a father. He shared these moments with Angel, the boys, and now the newest additions to his ever growing family. They were growing more and more each day. It was as if they were growing twice as fast as he wanted them too. His aging heart could only swell with pride every time he pictured the future of the pack in the paws of such little puppies. But at the same time it was sad how fast they were growing up. He wanted them to do well, so he would do his best to be the best damn father her could.
He unfolded his wings to end the tender moment with his daughter. His tail twitched and a smile crept across the greying maw of the High Chief. He folded his wings back to his orange sides and stood on his lanky legs. He looked down at her to get a good long look at the growing pup. "Yes, I can teach you to fly just like...Mommy." His heart sunk a little as he omitted his own skills. He still was not sure he would be able to soar to the highest heights that he once claimed. No need to burden her little shoulders with his handicap.
He took a few steps back and opened his wings wide. "First you need to stretch out your wings as far as you can. " His two-toned sky eyes noticed another terracotta wolf lurking in the distance. He smiled as he recognized her. Naomi. Aurora daughter through him. It was still an awkward situation for the adults, but he didn't think the pups needed to be roped into the drama. He was their father as much as he was the kieyou siblings. Though he did seem to spend the most time with the true-born litter. He was a little guilty about that. He cleared his throat and called over to her. "Naomi, would you like to learn to fly as well?" He hoped that she could be able too. She had the wings for it. But the small wings on her paws always confused him.
He glanced back down at Loca, wanting to know if she was going to let her half-siblings join in the frivolity. He did give her a 'be nice' look. Though maybe he needed to give that look to both of them. He did another cursory glances around the valley, looking for danger, other pups or perhaps another flight instructor. He looked back at Naomi, "Just come over here and open your wings like Loca and me." He stretched his wings back out again and gave them a few good flaps to show the girls how to get a feel for them.
