[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,true][atrb=cellPadding,0,true][atrb=width,435,true] | | The pale rotting mortui was an odd sight, lumbering along the horizon with stunning stars as its backdrop. The scene looked quite twisted as this place could be heaven but there was a beast of hell stopping to sit down to gaze upwards at the faintly twinkling stars. Ajax was thinking about what Scorch said about stirring up troubles between packs and to start encourage fear whenever the name of his pack, the Mafia, came up. It was a rather good idea but Scorch kept pressuring Ajax to produce a few ideas of his own. The mortui was puzzled about this; why would the Don want his enforcer to think up plans when the Don was the alpha of this fearsome pack. Perhaps he was expecting something from him. If so, Ajax could not fail his great leader.
This had been what he was thinking for those last few weeks. He refused to allow himself to relax. At least until today; only a few hours ago, he finally thought that he deserved a day off from the painful thoughts, as they buzzed around inside his mind non-stop for a long while. Ajax had decided to come to this clearing because this place had a reputation of clearing one's mind. He didn't come to clearings very often as he hated exposing his ugly form to the heavens but today he was desperate. Hopefully no one would see him here, as it was quite shielded.
Ajax blinked and saw the great territory of the Mafia in front of him, starting to feel slightly intimidated. It amazed him that Scorch had managed to control all of this massive land without even breaking a sweat. He knew he would break on the first day. It was also admirable seeing Scorch controlling his wolves, as the Mafia had a reputation of being wildly cruel and violent. It was surprising, after seeing the view of the jungle, that they had behaved quite well with Scorch as their king. Then suddenly a smirk stretched his decomposing lips, how long will this peace last?

Rambling and rambling and rambling, without any real purpose or direction. This idea, that idea, flitting and fluttering around a mind that spun-and-spun-and-spun like a spinny-dizzy-seedling, swirling from the treetops in fall. Everything and nothing, reality and fantasy, there wasn't anything that he couldn't comprehend. There wasn't anything that he could comprehend.
Although he knew that this was his pack, and the land that he was supposed to live on, and the wolves he was supposed to know, Hafalong didn't recognize any of it. Be it because he had spent so much time wandering beyond its boarders or because he had simply forgotten, he knew not. However, he did know that at the moment, he was hopelessly, terribly lost.
He vaguely remembered wandering through the jungle in search of somewhere to wet his "collection," and even finding one. However, returning from there to the place where he normally slept was much harder than he anticipated. He ended up walking in the same aimless circle, until he noticed that he was following his own paw prints and set off in a different direction. Now he was on the boarders of a clearing, trying to decide whether or not to break away from the cover of the jungle.
"You used to love being out in the open..." his ghostly companion, Mortus, appeared at his side. Hafalong flicked an ear in his direction, but otherwise ignored him, "Remember that, buddy? Flying? You don't do it much anymore."
Without answering, Hafalong slunk into the clearing, shoulders hunched. He disliked the way he was exposed. He had stalked too many wolves in open places like this, and rather successfully too. While it mayseemed a bit strange that he should feel more comfortable in a shadowy jungle, to him it made perfect sense. He knew the jungle. Nothing could sneak up on him there. The ghosts that wandered around the Mafia territory would alert him to any hostile presence.
However, in this open space there were less ghosts (most wandering into the jungle in much the same way as he had), and therefore he had to rely on a few strangers and the tricky Mortus to keep him safe, something he didn't enjoy much at all.
"Hey, buddy, what d'y'suppose happened to that poor wreck?" Mortus turned his attention towards a tattered wolf who sat, smirking, in the clearing. Hafalong perked his ears towards the other wolf, momentarily confused.
His appearance said dead, of that there was no doubt. Normally this wouldn't be any cause for alarm. The dead were everywhere, you just had to get used to them. What confused Hafalong was the smell. He had spent enough time with Mortus to know that no wolf could smell the dead. They left that behind with their bodies. However, this wolf certainly smelled, and it wasn't pleasant.
Hafalong inched closer to the other wolf, studying his exposed spine and entrails. He had never really paused to consider much about wolves beyond their eyes, so seeing all of this entranced him. When at last he had taken his fill of looking, he spoke.
"Are you dead?" he asked. There was nothing resembling tact or subtlety in his mind. He simply asked his question and waited for an answer.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,true][atrb=cellPadding,0,true][atrb=width,435,true] | | With a smirk still on his decomposing lips, Ajax thought about the last fight between a couple of Mafia members; him and Thana. The fight ended with Ajax losing his ear and Thana losing a part of her pelt. The injuries weren't serious as they both were mortuis, but it was serious enough for Ajax to be pissed off. Now that he had calmed down, he thought his one eared appearance fitted him and to see that that situation was rather funny. However, this didn't mean he had stopped wanting to kill Thana whenever he saw her; in fact, he wanted to murder her as much he wanted to tear his brother. Unfortunately, it would be tricky as he hadn't seen her that much recently, but at the same time, this pleased him. This meant Ajax was much more reliable than Thana, and it would be only a matter of time before Scorch chose to promote him and demote Thana. The smirk on his face got bigger and sinister; he was starting to climb up the ranks of the Mafia, and soon he would be able to use his power to track Thanatos down, finally eradicating him from the world. Then he would focus on wiping out the mortui species before finally purifying himself. The Great Spirit would be proud of him.
His wondrous thoughts were rudely interrupted by light footsteps behind him. Stifling a sigh, he turned around and saw an odd wolf, presumably from the Mafia as no one was brave enough to trespass, inching closer to him, sniffing. Ajax said nothing, he guessed that this black and white wolf had never seen a mortui before, but what surprised him was that there was no shock or disgust in his blue eyes. "No. I'm alive and very healthy. Because having your insides outside are good for you." He spoke quite heavily; he did not like others pointing out that he was dead, or at least looked like death. Yet this wolf's question bothered him. For years, actually. Ever since he discovered that he was starting to decay, he wondered if he had died. Or was he dying slowly? His heart wasn't beating anymore really, yet his brain was working well enough for him to survive. A year ago he had came to the conclusion that he wasn't 'brain-dead' yet, even though his body had died. But there was something about this conclusion that did not feel right.
"Well my heart had stopped a long time ago but my brain is functioning well, I hope. You can call me whatever you want." He wrinkled his nose before limping a few metres away from this nosy wolf. He really did not want to be bothered tonight. "Just do not bother me." He glared at the stranger. This wolf looked odd in some way, not just physically. Just odd. Ajax could not put his paw on it. But, since he was really uninterested he was unlikely to find out what was it.
