It wasn't such a hard decision, looking back. Really, it wasn't even a decision. A mind-shift, maybe? Something totally beyond control. Beyond control, but not necessarily bad.
It wasn't even something she had really noticed. She had wanted to get away from the Mafia for a bit. That short break turned into a few months, and by the time she had been gone for more than half a year, she realized that she didn't want to go back. She wanted to keep walking, maybe even join a different pack. She wouldn't have to tell anybody about her past. Nightmare could carry on the Darkly name, and she'd find a new home, giving vague answers to questions about her past and only killing for the food.
This was, however, not the mind-shift that had her so concerned.
What concerned her was her new attraction.
It happened when she was passing another wolf. Nothing much, really. They had nodded at each other, two travelers going in different directions, one going north for whatever reason, the other one heading east, trying to escape the desert where they had crossed paths. There was nothing strange about it. However, glancing back at the other wolf, a thought sprang forward, demanding attention.
Would I sleep with her?
For Elegance Darkly, it wasn't such a strange question. Dealings in seduction and murder had been her forte since shortly after her second birthday. She was certainly pretty enough for the job, although her pregnancy from a few years ago had left a few scars on her figure. Her voice still retained it's pleasant lilt, and her eyes were still as bright as ever.
It was what those eyes were looking at that had changed.
Would I? she asked herself this as she left the desert, not really paying attention to directions at this point. She had slept with plenty of wolves. Plenty of male wolves. It wasn't so much for the pleasure as it was for what came later. The murder, the art that she made with the various pelts and entrails. That had been her life, her stress reliever, something fun and creative (albeit gruesome) with which to pass the time. Seducing dim-minded boys to gather materials for her artwork was about as bland and uninteresting as watching a jackalope hopping along. The potential for a good meal was there, but the ease at which it was obtained was frustratingly simple.
And then there was this.
There was never any attraction to her victims. She was using them. However, for a moment, glancing back at the other female, Elegance felt a funny sort of hitching in her chest. At first, she dismissed it as a sign of her inevitable aging. However, as she stole another glance, she began to draw a few lines in her head.
The other wolf was pretty in her own way. She was a bit short and a bit skinny, but otherwise attractive. As she and Elegance nodded at each other, there was a small spark of interest in her eyes, but only the sort of interest that one could expect from seeing another wanderer in the middle of the sandy death trap. If she had been male, Elegance would have pursued that spark. As it was, she was regretting that she hadn't.
Is this normal?
For the first time since her youth, Elegance began to question herself.
She lay with her head on her paws, dark wings stretched out to catch the sun. Her lion's tail flicked back and forth lazily. The rock beneath her was warm, almost too warm. Wriggling, Elegance sought a cooler spot to resume sunning herself.
It must be normal. I can't be the only one like this. Anyways, it might have only been that one wolf. Or maybe it's just a passing phase. I might be a bit old for phases, true, but that could be it...
She offered herself these few reassurances, although they did nothing to soothe her troubled mind.
Maybe it's not such a bad thing, though... she mused, licking her paw nervously, After all, I can't get pregnant by another girl. I certainly don't want another pup like Nightmare. she wrinkled her nose at the thought of her deadbeat son, growing fat and lazy somewhere, no doubt.
Anyways... she shook the thoughts of Nightmare from her head, What's wrong with this, right? I could use a little change...
And yet she still licked her paw, unable to stop herself. If nothing else, it gave her something else to think about.
