Leo stalked through the lush undergrowth. He had abandoned any hope of remaining undetected. His black pelt stood out far too much against the green grass, so he could not remain camouflaged as he would have liked. There were only a few trees scattered around which disappointed him. He preferred the cover of trees to this wide expanse of space. Although he had to admit that it would be a good hunting ground, as the conditions were perfect for prey. He sniffed the air, confirming his thoughts. A very good hunting ground indeed. It also benefited his style of hunting, as there was more space to chase a prey animal until it grew too tired, or until he caught up and could land the final blow. It was also well sheltered, with large hills on both sides of the valley. The conditions here would be almost perfect all year round. It would also be easy to defend, as any intruder could be seen from as far distance, and there was a lot of space to fight. He hesitated in his confident stride, fur bristling, and eyes narrowing. He sniffed the air again, realizing he had reached the border of the territory. He stood still for a moment, gaze scanning the distance. He couldn’t see anyone, but that didn’t mean that no one was there. Despite the lack of cover, there was a few hiding places, especially for wolves who knew the area. He was also downwind, so he had no chance of smelling them, before they smelt him. He felt a flicker of excitement course through his chest. He had already decided that the territory was sufficient, even though there was still a large area he had yet to explore. There would probably be forests somewhere within the packs territory as well, so he knew the area was fine. It was just a matter of the pack itself. He tail twitched, and his eyes narrowed further. He decided to become stone faced, void of all emotions. He needed to join a pack, that much he knew, but he would not join a pack he knew nothing about. He briefly wondered if asking for information on a pack before joining would be regarded with suspicion, and he concluded that it probably would be. He didn’t care though. He took a step forward, crossing the border, and sat, within the territory. He eyes were gleaming with anticipation, but his expression was guarded. He exposed his chest, that swirled with a mixture of grey and light blue, showing his powerful muscles. His tail wrapped around his paws, and his mouth parted in a faint snarl. He looked powerful. He looked deadly. It was a look that suited him, and was easy to achieve. It was a look that was impressive, and intimidating, but not directly threatening. Now there was nothing to do, but wait.

He was almost constantly patrolling the pack grounds in search of intruders. However today he was in search of prey. He knew that the babies of the valley had been popping up everywhere. He had his heart set on rabbit today. He was stalking through the tall grass, though his red-orange and black pelt made it hard for him to blend in. Not to mention the great black wings on his back. At the moment the sleek feathers were folded neatly to his sides. Though they were in good condition, they were not used as often as the male would like.
His blue eyes peered over the landscape. He had a mild tilt of the head, using his left eye the most. The right side of his face had a giant scar that went over his eye. The cloudy blue of that eye indicated that he was mostly blind in it. A devastating blow for the lightweight keiyou. He was coping as well as he could. Today he was attempting a hunting technique he had seen some birds use. His tall lanky legs bent suddenly and he leaped into the air and snapped open the wings to glide to where he thought he saw movement. He then folded them suddenly and dropped like a fox, forelegs down as if to pin something.
A flash of white darted toward a burrow and disappeared. He glared at the hole in the ground. Miss. His long thin tail lashed behind him. The white ruff of fur at the end acting like a flag almost. It was about that time that he detected the scent of a stranger. He stood tall and turned toward the scent. It didn't take long for him to see a dark form not far off. The lanky male did not waste anytime. This was his territory and intruders needed to be dealt with, be it by removing or accepting.
He raised a quizzical brow at the pose the wolf was holing. Was he trying to be a rock? As he strode closer, he saw a snarl on the face. Hell of a way to enter another packs lands. Baring teeth, be it aggressively or not, was not something to be taken lightly. The whole picture was queer, so Reynard used a little more caution with out dropping his dominate stance. He paused a few yards away and gave a look that dared the wolf to try anything. Sure Reynard was more light weight than the lupus, but that didn't mean the alpha was a push over.
"You are trespassing on my pack lands. State your business." His tone was smooth and authoritative. His face was stony in response to the male. He didn't like loners puffing themselves up on his land.

Leo raised an eyebrow, contemplating the Keiyou’s words. His pack lands? So he was the alpha. Interesting. Leo examined him, noting the scar running down the keiyou’s right eye, making a mental note to attack the right side if it came to a fight. His gaze drifted towards the alpha’s wings, lingering for a moment over the black feathers that glistened in the sunlight. He had seen many Keiyou in his travels. They were lightweight, but were not to be underestimated. If it were to come to a fight, he would need to keep the alpha on the ground. On the ground they could be clumsy and slow due to their thick limbs, meaning they were easier to fight on the ground. The fact that a Keiyou was alpha revealed that the pack was probably open minded towards other species. Leo didn’t mind. He felt that discriminating against other species was a waste of effort. Although it was not certain that the pack was open to all species. He took his time examining the wolf, his eyes gleaming. He waited a few moments before he answered the question, revelling in the building tension. He stared into the alpha’s eyes, remaining perfectly still. He was being dramatic, but it felt…exhilarating. Not that he showed it. He schooled his expression to remain cold, almost…bored. “I have come to explore. To decide whether I should commit my loyalty to this pack, or if my skills would be best used elsewhere” He chose his words carefully, placing the emphasis on loyalty. All packs valued loyalty, and if it seemed that was his main motive, he was more likely to be granted permission. His tone matched the keiyou, but he forced some warmth into his voice. Best to appear friendly. Good thing he was a good liar, otherwise appearing friendly would have been an impossible task.

The blatant defiance to an alpha was too prominent not to be deliberate. This wolf was dangerous if he could be this brash as a trespasser. Reynard held his reservations to himself. Perhaps we was misjudging, but he did not want to have misplaced trust. However the safety of his pack was prominent in his mind.
The way the male looked him up and down made the fur raise on his the back of his neck. His ear twitched at the explanation. Loyalty? This lupus did not look or act like the type of wolf who valued loyalty. His expression hardened slightly. He definitely did not trust this wolf. To join his pack, trust needed to be earned. His family was his world, and as the scar on his face proved, he would lay his life down for his kin.
He looked the loner up and down, strong wolves were needed in his pack. This lupus, most lupus, seemed stronger than a good portion of the breeds he knew. His own First Guardian was a powerful water lupus. "What skills do you have?" He did not want to voice his doubts immediately, but he did not want to turn away a possible asset to his pack. He remained emotionally distant. The tension was thick in the air, so he opted not to disclose any valuable information about his pack just yet. His enemies were not far off, he already had a bounty or two out on some troublesome rouges and loners. For all he knew, this wolf was an agent of them, or worse, the Mafia.

He allowed himself a grin. This wolf was smart, that much was clear. The alpha wasn’t going to trust him without reason, but he wasn’t going to send him away if he could be an asset to them. That was logical thinking, and Leo respected wolves who focused on logic rather than emotions. “In terms of my elemental power, I am a fire Lupus. I can control fire, and create it” He explained, not adding that creating the fire took a lot of effort, and often didn’t work. “In terms of my physical ability, I am an excellent hunter, I am fast, and have a lot of stamina. I am also a good fighter” He paused a moment, letting the information sink in, before he continued, enjoying the chance to show off. “In terms of my mental ability, I am intelligent. More so than the average wolf. I observe, and I deduce information. I can be very determined, and I am fearless.” He was going to continue, but decided against it. The alpha didn’t trust him, and if he acted smug (even if he had good reason to be) his chance of finding out more about the pack was lowered. He nodded his head slightly, indicating he had finished.

"Speaking" The First Guardian walked along the pack borders, nose to the ground as he tracked nothing and everything, his thick tail flowing in the slight breeze. The Children had a large pack and not many dared test their strength even though they were best known for their accepting ways. Well their numbers acted as a reliable deterrent to wolves seeking mischief, it still remained a large responsibility to orchestra the protection of such a large scale pack, especially given its considerable territory. Coneiron had been made First Guardian, he had certainly proven his salt for the position, and took his position with an incredible amount of seriousness. The large lupus was a fearsome sight to see at first glance, his pelt was deep ebony black and rippled with a deep blue glaze and in that dark midst swirled shades of azure aqua and cobalt blue, vibrant and captivating it was as though they glowed from amidst the ink black. It was often his eyes that instilled more fear, bright aqua and almost luminescent in quality they were eerily intelligent and alert and could haunt a being far past one`s encounter.
However, anyone who truly knew Coneiron understood that at heart he was a gallant individual that possessed a strong sense of loyalty and duty and a desire to remain true to his being. He had joined the pack because he had believed that they too valued similar ethics, and his instincts, as usual, had not proven wrong. Spring had finally reached the valley upon this day, and the sun beamed into his fur, creating the illusion of uncharacteristic depths and vibrancy as he moved. Coneiron was 9 years old, the same age as his Alpha, and yet he had been gifted with Eternal Youth and conserved the appearance, and the strength, of one in the prime of his life. His hide was not lithe in appearance, but rather strongly built with compact muscles that created a bold frame. Large paws walked with assured confidence and a quiet grace uncharacteristic of one his size and he raised his head to peer at the distance. A smile touched his maw when his gaze fell upon Reynard, it was good to see the Alpha out and mobile, the calagris attack had been shoking and nerve racking and had it not been for some excellent healers Coneiron feared the pack would have lost its very heart; their High Chief.
Increasing his pace he strolled with purpose towards the Alpha, stopping short when he noticed a black shape near by and narrowing his eyes with suspicion, this was not a pack mate, perhaps a new member? It would explain why Reynard was addressing him, though Coneiron still feared for the alpha`s safety. The other wolf appeared to be in fine health and strength, and resembled a lupus in form, and Reynard was therefore vulnerable in the face of this other male`s presence. Moving steadily nearer he gave a bark of greeting, the sound not made to be loud, but all the same resounding with assertiveness. In short he was letting Reynard know he had backup as necessary within him, besides, Coneiron liked meeting new members as well. Giving his tail a friendly wag but keeping it lower that Reynard`s to greet his alpha respectfully he gave him a conspiring smile, “Good day Reynard, tis a pleasure to see you once again, it would seem as though you have found a scraggler.” He turned his gaze on the other wolf, raising a brow questioningly and adding, “I am Coneiron, humble First Guardian to this honorable pack that occupies the territory you are now grazzing.” He tilted his head in greeting, a small gesture and moved to sit in a fashion that would create a triangle between the wolves, curious to see how his presence would be taken.

He took in the scent and filed away all the traits the confident wolf was listing. He seemed to be in good health, and as a loner, that was a feat in itself. The wolf certainly liked to toot his own horn, then again, Rey had been vague in his question. Maybe this wolf was just through. So: strong, fast and smart. A fire lupus. He tried to remember if he had a fire lupus in his ranks. Gravity, earth and water seemed to be the only ones that came to mind. He needed to get out more and actually mingle with his pack, especially since the icy grip of winter had left.
He was about to part his maw to respond to this...fearless wolf, when a bark got his attention. He dared to turn his head away from the stranger long enough to confirm that it was Coneiron. He situated himself to include the other lupus into the conversation. He was glad one of his Guardians had come to him with out him calling. However he was not sure if Con was dense, or just ignoring the tension that was in the air. It was a nice breather to have some kinder words being spoken, perhaps the overly confident stranger would drop his semi-aggressive stance now that he was outnumbered.
Reynard nodded in return and answered the smile with one of his own crooked ones, "Coneiron." He allowed the First Guardian to break the ice with the nameless stranger before him. Reynard had been more concerned with what the intentions were before getting around to formalities such as names, but Con was not aware of that. A few birds began singing across the valley. The sun was delightfully warm against the dark wings of the elderly alpha. He still was curious as to why his friend looked so young for his age. Frankly he had suspected something was up since the calagris attack. It seemed that all his most trusted wolves had suddenly been granted with some mysticism from the Great Spirit.
He could wonder about those powers later, he knew some of his wolves had special abilities, he could figure out how they got them in his own time. For now a different conundrum needed to be breached. Would this stranger be a threat to his own? He waited for the strangers reaction before speaking out once more.

Leo blinked at the arrival of Coneiron. The tip of his tail twitched. The First Guardian had an odd way of speaking. Far too formal for Leo’s liking. He wasn’t quite sure what a scraggler was either, but he assumed he was one, whether that was a positive thing or not. Nor did he think he was ‘grazzing’. His eyes flashed with annoyance, but he realised the even though the new wolf was irritating, he seemed far more trusting then the alpha, who he now knew was called Reynard. He forced a smile on his face, and relaxed his expression, turning away from Reynard. He could deal with acting friendly for a while he supposed, just so he could get some information before he made a decision as to whether he could join the pack. It was clear that getting information out of Reynard would be difficult. Though if he did join the pack, he would be content with Reynard as an alpha, but he doubted he could put up with Coneiron. “Hello Coneiron, I’m afraid I’m not used to the terms you have used. Could you explain what a guardian is?” He asks, mimicking Coneiron tone. He knew that the wolf had said First Guardian, but he had said guardian on purpose. If the wolf corrected him, he would find out more. He wondered if he should introduce himself, but decided against it.

"Speaking" Although Coneiron was one to put on a friendly and courteous face he was not however one to ignore, nor remain oblivious to tension and his eyes beamed with cunning as he regarded this new comer. Frankly he usually found wolves talked more freely when at ease, as so by deduction and simple logic he could assumed that if this wolf thought he was dealing with a bunch of sappy soft hearts he would generally be more cocky and tend to reveal a more truer nature. Not to mention tension was simply bad for one’s health and a wolf at disease was one more likely to lie for protection. Giving Reynard a jovial wink he seemed to move into a rather comfortable position, his body visibly free of tension or worry. Fact was simply that as need be he could react on a dime, his position of comfort was fraught from many hours of childhood training and adolescent perseverance under the watchful eyes of those that were raised to protect and defend. Had he had any less self-restraint he would have chuckled at the other wolf’s puzzlement, a little bitof vocabulary seemed to have disrupted his self assured know-it-all stance, but no matter it had not been his intention in the least.
A small knowing smile hinting at the corners of his maw was all that betrayed his amusement as he glanced at Reynard to see his reaction. His voice rang out casual and dismissive, “Oh, that is but the term applied to straying wolves that wander without great purpose, nothing you need fret about ol’ boy.” Honestly, youth these days, he thought to himself, there was so much they had yet to learn a little decorum and respect would be better served than brazen boasting. He supposed he might have been similar in disposition had he not been in a more…disciplined pack, but as it were Coneiron had never been particularly boastful, up till now of course, it lacked dignity and dignity was a highly praised and required attribute in the pack he had been raised. Flicking his ears in an absent minded fashion, he pondered a reasonable answer to the younger’s wolf question, and given he hadn’t really offered much information in return Coneiron deemed answering a question with a question would be the most entertaining manner in which to proceed.
The breeze came to tousle the incredibly thick fur that lined his body, a breath of humidity in the air that seemed to speak to Coneiron of spring and thawed ice. It would soon be time to recommence his water sculptures in the river, my he did so enjoy this form of art, to be able to use one’s power for more than destruction seemed like the ultimate demonstration of superior manipulation and control. “Tell you what, how’s about you share you name first and perhaps this can be a mutual expansion of knowledge, hum?” He leaned forward and raised his brow, challenging the other wolf’s ability to spar in an amicable fashion, his voice informal but his eyes brimming with interest. Frankly interactions could not all be give, sometimes one had to take and for all his friendly show, Coneiron was neither dense nor dumb.

He wondered how long it would be before he needed to select a second First Guardian....he pondered that phrase in his mind. Perhaps he needed to reword what they were called. His mind came back quickly to the matter at hand. It seemed that Con was playing coy with this new wolf. He couldn't help but smile slightly at the word play. That was enough to ease some of the tension that Reynard was feeling. As for the wolf before him, it seemed that every thing he said colored him badly in the older male's eyes.
Mimicry was close to mockery in Reynard's book so he took a moment to clear his throat and look at the younger male before him, "It behooves you to respect those that would outrank you. If you were to join our pack. I expect loyalty and respect from all my members." His pack was family oriented and Reynard was not a harsh leader. He was pretty laid back as far as most things went, but in serious situations, like this one, some rules needed to be followed. His tone was more stern than usual, partly because he still had no reason to trust this male. Most wolves he could read pretty well, he was a decent judge of character. However there was something...off about this wolf that gave him pause.
As he pondered the situation, he allowed for Coneiron to get his two cents in as well. Yes, exchange of information was a good thing to have. A name for a name. Information for information. Details could be sorted out once Reynard was able to place this wolf. He seemed to have the makings of a Guardian himself, but that would mean he would have to answer to Coneiron. So far they two of them did not seem like they would get along too terribly well. Perhaps a hunter would be a better fit until Reynard could name a second leader of the Guard. It was not every day that he had to place ranks due to social status.

Leo frowned, deciding that his method of approach was wrong, and quickly switched back to closed off, with a cold, calculating expression. Coneiron was smarter than he looked at least, but Leo realised that he wasn’t as trustworthy as he had first thought. Still, something as trivial as a name was meaningless, especially as he could easily make up a name if he needed too. He contemplated giving a fake name, just to demonstrate he was still in charge, but decided against it. If he did join the pack, he wouldn’t want to be addressed with a name that wasn’t his. He gaze flickered towards Reynard. “My loyalty and respect means more to me then simple rank. I do however follow orders” He added, realising he wasn’t helping himself. He was lying, he was bad when it came to following orders, but he had been a high rank in his old pack (even though it was small) so orders were only ever given by his parents, and he ignored them anyway. “Besides, you would not need to worry. I respect you already, for your logical approach to my appearance.” He pointed out, curious to see how the alpha would react. He already knew that Reynard had been talking about Coneiron, but he decided to ignore that fact. “Oh, and my name is Leo, not that it matters to you. I doubt you would know who I was.” He pointed out, returning his gaze to Coneiron.

"Speaking" Bingo! Coneiron knew that Reynard understood exactly what game his First Guardian was playing at, and if there was one thing the water lupus had learned is was that if one employed too much bullshit, they would begin to reek. Of course this fellow could simply be clean and exactly as he stated, but generally Coneiron found that those that were honest usually did not shy away from divulging such a simple matter as their name. However it wasn’t his final judgement that mattered, it was Reynard and Coneiron was content to allow the Alpha to take the lead, the lupus had only come to serve as backup in case he was needed. His keen eyes took in the other’s appearance, he had the physical makings of a Guardian, but if he was to become one he would have to answer to Coneiron’s directions, and then they would see just how good he did take orders. The thought brought a contemplative smile to his maw, the other wolf’s presence would not disturb Coneiron’s stride in any fashion, however if the fellow couldn’t take proper direction then the strength of the pack’s defense would be weakened.
It was only lucky for the outsider that Coneiron was willing to give most individuals a monitored chance, initial shady reactions could easily be bi-products of social dis-ease, or perhaps a suspicious nature if one wanted to further stipulate. Whatever his Alpha decided would naturally be fine with the First Guardian, Reynard had proven to be an excellent judge of character and had repeatedly made sound decisions that usually generated positive results. At this rate the other wolf was going to choke on his words if he kept spewing notions of respect and loyalty upon the bare bones of a first encounter, though who knows, maybe he was indeed easily impressionable, who was Coneiron to say? And so for the time being he kept quiet, a silent pillar that watched with a humbled grace as Reynard once again took charge.
The First Guardian would have continued his silent vigil as well, had it not been for another outstanding comment that simply rubbed his fur the wrong way. Rather protective of the pack he had half a mind to rebuke with a demeaning comment, however logic and a sound mind prevailed and he took a calming breath before answering. When he finally spoke his voice was a calm and reasonable tone, as though one speaking to a child first learning about manners. “Oh, well actually you see it does matter, quite a fair bit Leo. Proper introduction is a historical representation of good manners and demonstrates a courteous disposition; it reflects respect and allows a conversation to start on the right foot and in companionable company. Of course I do not know who you are, but it seems as though I shall have the pleasure of finding out in good time if you are considering this honorable pack.” His response was not sarcastic, did not have bite nor was it degrading, but all the same it made a strong point.

Then again, if he allowed every ruffian in his pack, it would not be as prosperous as it was. He just hoped that he did not have to put another bounty out by the end of the day. He did not like how snarky this new wolf was, or his thinly veiled contempt for his pack members. He could feel his temper rising with his hackles. However he did not let it show, a good leader had to control his emotions, though his tail was lashing slightly in annoyance.
"Following orders does not earn you rank. Nor is rank the only thing that requires respect and loyalty. I expect everyone in my ranks to respect one another and help each other." He turned a cool gaze to the newcommer "As well as trust each other. And trust does not come easy when one is withholding information or attempting to play games with those that hold his potential future in their paws." He was done with this stranger.
"My pack is large with an array of wolves from all walks of life. We are accepting insofar as those that we allow in abide by my rules. I do not tolerate instigators coming in and stirring up trouble. " He looked at Coneiron, agreeing with his assessment. " As Coneiron says, you would be welcome to join if you agree to conform to our rules. Respect every wolf in the pack and pull your own weight. Protect and defend."
He stood up, his long legs lifting him easily. He shrugged his wing shoulders to maintain his balance. His lanky figure was slight compared to the two lupus, but he held himself in such a way that showed strength. His gaze rested on Leo. "As to my 'logical approach to your appearance' The simple truth of it is that I do not trust you and you have yet to give me a reason to trust you. You have not been honest with me and you are mocking one of my good friends and most trusted wolves." He opened his wings slightly as if he were about to end the conversation.
"I understand you are exploring the packs in the area and I can respect that. I have given you all the information about my pack that I am willing to give considering you are a loner. You are not permitted in my packlands until you make your decision. Depending on what pack you join, be it mine or one of my allies, that will determine whether or not permission will be granted. " He paused, then added, "My allies are the Enclave to the north, the Cadre to the west, and the Accord to the North-west."
He kept looking at Leo, waiting to see if he had anymore questions before he sent him on his way. He trusted that Coneiron would memorize the scent and description of the loner and inform the rest of the Guardians to be on the look out for him incase he ended up joining his pack.

Leo smiled, slightly impressed by Reynard’s show of power. He nodded slightly, realizing that there was no chance he would get any more information out of the alpha, but what he knew would be sufficient to make a decision, once he visited the other pack that resided in the south. He didn’t recognise any of the packs, as he was merely a loner from another land, and the names were not something he was aware of. “I think you’ll find that I have indeed been honest with you, but regardless of that, I can not give you a reason to trust me, as I expect you can’t give me a reason to trust you. Not until I decide to join the pack anyway” And even then, trust can be a danger, He added mentally. If you trust everybody, without question, than one day you will get stabbed in the back. Traitors are everywhere, regardless of what territory they live in, there will always be wolves that lust for more, and will paint a path of blood to get it. He raised an eyebrow, when Reynard said permission would be granted if he joint his pack, or his allies. Alliances, with other packs, in his experience lasted a few days, and entitled a travelling wolf to rest. He decided that he would ask one final question before he made to leave. “I will head off now, and perhaps I shall return. However, I do not recognise the names of the packs. Nor do I know the name of your pack?” He phrased it as a question. He was merely curious, and the name had the potential to reveal more. “And one last thing, how does your alliance with other packs work? Where I come from, there is not such thing” He added the last bit, to explain that he meant how does alliance with other packs work overall.
