Of all the places they had to shelter, why did it have to be here? The snow glistened in the pale afternoon sun. The lake had a few open spots in the ice where others had come to drink near the shore, but the water seen through the holes was as still as if they were still frozen. A dark shape moved carefully through the snow, her lithe limbs carried her core high above the snow. Her wings flapped lazily in the still air, the blue butterfly wings catching the weak light now and then.
She jumped up onto a crag in the side of the cliff that overlooked the lake. She didn't see any ice over the boulder so she opted to settle in the sun there. The sennyo daintily shook off her paws and folded her willowy legs under her black body. Her long, white tipped tail seemed to float behind her body for a few seconds before curling around her. Her cold blue eyes scanned the heart of the Enclave's territory. She wondered why they couldn't have gone to the valley, at least that was slightly warmer than the frigid north. Her pack was forced to run from their lands to come to Ahote's. A flash flood in the canyon....a dragon ride and before she knew it she was back here.
Her antenna folded slowly down her neck as she finally got comfortable. Much like a cat, she was sunning her self and observing the world as it walked passed. She had spent many years traveling, even more years avoiding lasting relationships. Yet here she was...a beta of a pack, hanging out in another pack where more than one wolf knew her name. Her whims sometimes brought her to a pack, but she never stuck around long enough to establish herself. Rarely did she get involved, but Rhia was different, and her position brought her amusements now and then.
She was vaguely aware that his was her birth month. Over a century ago she came into the world naive and helpless. Now she was wise and poisonous. Bitter and vain. Clever and self-reliant. She had done well for herself, at least she liked to think so. Though today, she was bored and cold. She did not like the rules of this pack, that females had to be accompanied most everywhere. She had opted to hold her tongue and keep to herself until she knew that Rhia and her kids were safe. Then she would most likely begin wandering the lands once more to communicate the new living arrangements to their allies, the Children.
For being a pack of mostly males, she had yet to see any specimens she deemed worthy to play with. Perhaps she was setting the bar too high, comparing each male to Caesar or Ahote. Two males she planned to mess with over the next few years. Maybe she could find a fling to bide her time and satiate her appetite in between games. Her gaze wandered back to the holes in the ice. She was peckish, maybe she could manage a fish today. Though her nose wrinkled at the idea of getting cold and wet in the attempt to catch a meal. Fish were her only option for food here. The winter had not allowed the trees to fruit just yet and the winter berries were small. Maybe she would have to concede to eat the tough meat of hardier prey. | |
