Making difficult decisions was never something Tamarack was good at. The young yagi liked to keep her options open, always have a way out. But loner life was simply becoming too treacherous for the wolf; she wasn't exactly a top physical specimen, not with her breathing problems, and there had been a few too many close calls for her to continue living alone. Just last week there had been the dragon she only managed to avoid because it was already eating, and then there was the mafia wolf a few days ago - no, loner life was simply too dangerous, as much as Tam hated to admit it.
Then, of course, came the issue of which pack to join. The Mafia was out - Tam was a liar, not a criminal. The Cadre was tempting, but she couldn't make it with her lungs. The Accord was too...noble. The Enclave seemed alright, but she didn't like their way of separating the females from the males - or how the males were all the ones running things. So that left the Children of Hvítur Ári.
Green paws poised on the edge of Lumera Valley, Tam hesitated. She had never joined a pack before; how was it done? Did she simply walk in and announce her presence? Would she have to fight? Tam wasn't horrible at fighting, but if she strained herself she'd end up a gasping pile of fur. Still, she had to do it.
The yagi padded slowly into the valley, muscles tense. She could smell the Children's scent markers all around, and after months of avoiding borders like that, it made her uneasy to pass them. After a few steps she sat in her haunches, still tense but trying to appear unthreatening. She howled once - any alpha would respond to that, surely. Now all there was to do was wait.

He arose early, attempting to sneak out to keep his new puppies from tackling him and making him run behind. He had already remarked this part of the pack land and was heading to the northern part. His reddish-orange pelt seemed to catch the warm sun rays and reflect them back slightly with a gleam of standard health. Yes his coat was a little duller than younger wolves, but for his age, he was surprisingly spry, save for the arthritis. His great black wings absorbed the sunlight as his long legs carried him over the longer grasses of the body. A year or so ago he would have been flying over his territory, seeing everything from above. However, as he turned his head to the sound of a strange wolf howling not far from where he just was, a nasty scar sent furrowed shadows across his right eye. His mostly blind eye.
"Damn. I was just over there...." He shook his head with a slight chuckle. It seemed that the warm weather was bringing wolves in from all over the place. It was hard for an old wolf to keep up. The elderly keiyou turned his lean, lanky body around and began heading back toward the howl that beckoned him. His black face, peppered with gray held a friendly smirk as he brought himself over the ridge. His blue eyes widened with slight surprise, a yagi. He did not have many, if any yagi in his pack at the moment. How delightful! He woofed a greeting out, to alert her of his presence.
"I assume the summons was from you?" His oily voice had been seasoned with charisma in his old age. His lion-like tail twitched, the white flag of a tuft catching the sunlight slightly. He examined the female that stood before him, spines instead of horns. Sabers. Smaller than the yagi he knew...his allies in the Enclave. He himself stood five inches taller than her as he moved to meet her. Yes she outweighed him be several stone, but that was expected at least. " I'm Reynard, High Chief of the Children. Do you wish to join my pack?" He kept his great wings open slightly, a habit to appear bigger around the large species of wolves, which were most weight wise.

Tam couldn't help it; when she heard the High Chief of the Children approach, she tensed, her fear spreading its scent into the air. Tam tried not to scowl. She didn't like advertising her fear like that, and usually was able to keep it under control so that her body didn't tell everyone she was scared of something. Oh, well, there was nothing to be done about that now. She did manage to keep still when she heard the low wood instead of starting with fright, at least. This wasn't usually an issue with her - Tam's cynicism helped her to be apathetic and keep emotions under control. Usually. Damn it all, she thought.
The keiyou who approached her seemed, to Tam, to be what an alpha should be - older, so probably wiser, but not frail in his age. He was taller than her, but most wolves were; she knew she probably outweighed him, but that meant nothing, really. To be in charge of such a large pack, he would have to be could in a scuffle, and Tam was far from a seasoned fighter. His wings looked powerful - Tam wondered how much power a blow from one packed. She'd heard of wolves stunned by a hit to the head from a keiyou wing. Not that she was planning on fighting the older wolf; no, that would be ridiculous. It was just where her mind went when she was scared, automatically trying to calculate the damage he would do if worst came to worst.
In response to his greeting, Tam simply nodded. Her voice was calm when she answered, although she knew that wouldn't fool the High Chief. "I'm Tamarack, Tam. Yes, I'd like to join the Children." She lowered her gaze to the ground. The last thing Tam wanted to do was try to start a dominance battle by meeting his gaze. Tam wasn't usually submissive if she could help it, but she wasn't stupid, either.

He himself used to be a coward, so to invoke fears in others used to give him such pleasure. However, he was no longer the cad he once was. He had been thrown into leadership and parenting in one fell swoop. He had no room to run so he had to take the reins of a leaderless pack and make a life for his children and pack. Here he stood now, still holding a firm grasp on the pack he saved, his leadership had only been challenged once, by the former leader. Fighting had not been his strong point either, but his charisma had the love of the pack, and that gave him more power than most realized.
He gave a slight smile at her brave front. He noted the adverted gaze, good, he could respect a wolf that still kept to the old ways. To ease the tension he sat his narrow hips down to take a seat to allow for a more conversational atmosphere. "Tam, welcome. Tell me a little bit about yourself and I can tell you where you would fit in the best around here. " He did not want to be handing out ranks willy-nilly, despite his needs in certain areas. His mind flickered back to his new pups. He needed a reliable sitter for them. Though he also needed hunters...nurses were also running thin these days.
"Is there anything I can help you with to allow you more ease in settling in around here? Questions you may have? Concerns?" He liked his new recruits to be well informed, he found transitions were easier with knowledge. His tall ears twitched and flickered, listening to the surrounding area, not wishing to be caught off guard if something...or someone else was lurking near by. He found himself a little more paranoid since he lost most of his sight in his right eye.
