Circling high overhead of the canyon, her wings gliding on air currents whenever they could, Yatai's sharp aquiline eyes scoured the land below. Having seen nothing threatning, Yatai began to descend, skipping a few beats of her wings and her overhead circles shorted as she descended toward what looked like a ring along th top of the canyon.
Feeling Skart's objections begining, not for the first time, she blocked him out as best she could; she could still feel him pouting.
Back-pedaling when nearing the rock she skidded on the landing and had to run a ways to avoid taking a face-plant and possibly breaking her forepaws. Nice landing, Skart sniggered. Ignoring him once more, Yatai stopped, fanned out her wings one last time to cool them down as well as to maintain balance, and tucked them neatly to her sides, and looked about herself, her golden eyes spotted old bloodstains and her nose scented wolves, some fresh, but most stale.
Padding warily to the center of the ring she lifted her black head and howled, it was a simple howl, deep compared to most females. The howl simpily said "I am here," perhaps said with feeling of longing and lonliness in it, but Yatai didn't care. She howled loudly so that where-ever the wolves were, they would hear her.
She repeated the howl once more before dropping her head and glancing about again, finding a low ledge, slightly away from the circle. Half-crawling to get half-way under it to escape the sun's heat and help prevent being seen if she didn't wish to be. Laying down and panting slightly, she laid in a position to where she could get out quickly if needs be. Yatai let her wings drop from her sides so thay they brushed the ground, half because it felt better and half 'cause of Skarts instincts told her to be ready for flight.
With nothing left to do, Yatai put her head between her paws, studied the cannyon walls about her, the drop-offs, possible caves, where there may be predators such as griffins and dragons; All the while waiting for the stranger wolves.

Today in particular she was avoiding an over affectionate myou puppy that had taken a shinning to her...the Great Spirit only knew why that happened.
Cold blue eyes flickered back and forth as she made her way up the steps to the ring. She was not so much looking for danger as to making sure no one had walked up the steps recently to give her company at the top. Once she was far enough up, she almost felt relieved. Until a strange howl came to her soft ears from the top.
"You have got to be kidding me...." The black female grumbled a little under her breath. Her feather-light tail flicked and floated and twitched with aggitation. She paused on the steps and peered back over her shoulder, past her blue-morpho butterfly wings. She was too far up just to turn and pretend she hadn't been here. She growled softly to herself. Why was she always the welcoming committee? It never ended well.
Sipping back her pride, the vain and calloused female continued to walk up the staircase. Soon she came to the top and looked around. Maybe she had misheard. She sniffed the air, no..there was someone here. She didn't like hide-and-seek "Show yourself. Her voice was like ice, cutting thorough the dry heat of the canyon.

Watch it.
Shooting her head up at the voice and glancing around, Skart had predicted right, having uttered the warning less than a moment before a sleek black wolf appeared within view. It seemed to be a sennyo, if Yatai remembered right, considering the butterfly wings upon it's back. She had only heard about them, but had never actually seen one, they were know for their amazingly long life.
Supprised that she had not been seen as she was told this by the cold voice telling her to come out and show herself, she then realized that the shadows had fallen over her, hiding her. Getting onto her paws and slinking out from under the ledge, she must've looked like a shadow coming to life.
Pulling her dark wings to her sides and raising her thin, tuff-less tail somewhat, and bringing her head a little more than level, Yatai stepped slightly away from the ledge and stood there stiffly, her golden eyes studying the stranger.

She didn't turn her head any, she was at a prominent angle as it was for postureing. Her feather-light tail floated to a position of dominance that came with a decently ranked pack wolf. A keiyou? Her eyes narrowed a little. Well that explained why she didn't smell traces coming up the steps. Though something seemed a little off. She could not quite put her paw to it. She ignored it.
"You realize that you are trespassing. Or else you would not have sent a howl. What do you want?" She was a tad prickly today, her thin jaw was set once she finished speaking, making her more look like a sculpture of stone or ice than an actual wolf.
She wondered if she was the only one that heard the howl...or if she was the closest that responded. No matter what it was, no doubt someone else would lumber up the steps soon. She only hoped it wasn't that damnable beta. She figured if it was an alpha that came up...than Gypsy would have to fight the newcommer. Oddly enough, she had grown accustomed to that. Even if she was not strong, she was light enough on her feet to prove challenging enough to get a bite in. Maybe she needed a fight to release the century of tension in her shoulders.

Shifting into a slightly more comfortable position on her paws as she sensed she may have to stand awhile. . . or take off in a hurry. Yatai's black, tuftless tail flicked to the side as the wolf's comment came to her ears. She'd known the pack was, or at least had been, accepting, and there was a fight of some kind involved with joining.
Careful to think before replying, Yatai still wasn't sure if this was an alpha and didn't want to offend her if she was. "There is a pack here, I wish to join." Yatai said this gruffly, but not much said by her wasn't done gruffly. Don't we all wish? Skart couldn't help wondering outloud, she sent him a mental glare.
Focusing her attention on the wolf in front of her, Yatai studied her with flinty eyes and tried her best to remember the proper stance for an alpha wolf. She couldn't.

She tried to look down the stairs, to see if anyone was coming up. No one yet. She looked back at the feathered wolf, her cold eyes lingered once again over the wings. There was a little envy hidden behind the glass walls. Her own useless wings fluttered to keep a breeze going over her back.
She decided to ask a few questions to pass the time, maybe it would help clear Gypsy's mind in general. "What do you do?" She asked stiffly, "What would you bring to this pack?" Her white tipped tail twitched in the warm air. Why was it that mostly females were joining the pack? She hated competition, not that there were any good males to go after.....

Twitching her dark, tuftless tail in suprise at the unexpected questions, Yatai opened her jaws slightly to reply, but decided against that answer and snapped her jaws shut with a slight snick. Then deciding, she replied simply, "I hunt, I fly." But the last question stayed in her mind, what could she bring to the pack? Her aquiline eyes gleamed as she thought.
You bring your skill and your loyalty. Skart said, hoping to help, suddenly determined to get her into the pack despite the grouchy sennyo. Decided, she added gruffly, "But I can't promise nothing more than you already have." Then lifting her gaze she looked the black wolf in the eye, hoping that she wouldn't regret it later.

Perhaps she could hurry this up and get to her solitude finally. With no noteworthy males to play with in the pack, she was slowly growing tired of pack life once again.
"We do not have any notable fliers. It can come in handy is you are able to navigate the cliffs around here as well as out maneuver a griffen." She let the last bit set there a moment. She wondered if she would have to fight her...like she had a few others already. With Rhia absent, Forte always gone and Kai...well Kai, it seemed it was up to her to allow new members in. She snorted a little at the thought of responsibility.
"I will fight you if you wish to join." Her words were spoken as if she were reading them from a lifeless script. Clearly she was trying to be accepting, or at the very last somewhat ceremonial or formal.

Flicking her ears back at the thought of ever having to test her skills against a griffin, Yatai then heard what she had been waiting to hear: She could join. But first she had to fight this ill-tempered wolf. It was worth it.
At the sennyo's last words she sidestepped so that there was no danger of being pushed back under the shallow cleft she had laid in. Leaning back on her haunches, Yatai shuffled her wings so that they were half unfolded as if she was going to take off. Bracing her forepaws so that she could spring either way as easily as possible. Then allowing Skart's mind to merge with her own and putting his sense of sight to good use so that her eyes would pick out the slightest movement.
Lowering her head so that the tips of Yatai's pricked ears were even with her shoulders, Yatai growled "Then let us fight." Letting her jaw stay open slightly, her bright golden aquiline eyes studied the black she-wolf.

"This is a spar, no life threatening blows, it is to test your skills." She folded her own wings together, keeping them out of harms way. She antennae folded flat on her head and down her neck to keep them from getting hurt as well.
She matched the stance of the winged wolf, keeping her eyes trained on her body to better watch it move and study her actions. Then she lunged. Her long legs carried her quickly to meet her oppenent, her feathery tail acted as a sort of balancing agent to keep her steady and able to react quickly.

Yatai moved as soon the sennyo's paws moved forward, leaping not even a head's length to her left before coming up short on purpose to make the sennyo believe thats the side she's going to attack on, and pushing her hind paw into the ground to swivel on toward the right, momentum helped but she also had to push with her paw. Her left wing extending slightly and flapping once for balence before both of her dark wings were being tucked close, but loosely to her body to avoid being bitten. As she swiveled Yatai lowered herself as close to the ground as she dared to avoid being attacked from above as it was likely that the she-wolf could grab her haunches as she passed. Taking not even a seconds' worth of Skart's instictively carefull, calculating aiming, she lept for the black she-wolf's foreleg.
She had done all of this within seconds, neatly and smoothly, almost as though practiced, though she'd only done it once before. Powerfull jaws gaping-waiting to snap- ears and wings flattened to her, she prepared herself to, if things went right, bite the foreleg and pull it upward so that the wolf would be turned over and be more vulnerable. . . Now as she hurtled forward, directed by instinct she opened her jaws wider, the white fangs gleaming. . .

However she made no move to bite, she was merely watching. The sudden movement back to the right, using the feathered wing for maneuverability was note worthy.
Again, she did not attempt to bite. When she saw the jaws coming for her, she reared up and hopped backwards out of reach, her tail lashing here and there to balance her own manuvers. She may not have been the most powerful wolf, but she had decent enough agility to dance away from gaping jaws.
Once out of reach she stood her ground, her attack was thwarted by the counterattck. Now it was the others turn. Her cold eyes remain objective and observant.

Yatai knew she'd missed when she saw the black wolf rear and dance away, but it was too late for her to stop what happened; Left unable to whirl, head back after the wolf and continue the fight like she would have liked she was going to be in a position of vulnerability if she didn't act fast. Unfurling her wings and flapping them quickly, but only halfway, she had no intention to cheating this fight with flight. Pushing her hindlegs forwad into the ground, pushing up and foward with all four paws and with her wing's frantic flaps she was lifted from the ground quickly and ready to fight off an attack, her fangs bared and her steppe eagle-like wing settling back into thier loose heaps at her sides, she looked to see where the sennyo would be coming from.
What she saw suprised her, the wolf had given up an excelent opportunity to attack to attack her and was waiting for Yatai to attack instead. Skart spoke up, The wolf hasn't bothered to bite you once Yatai, she's watching you though and reacting. . .testing you. Once again Skart managed to notice something she was too busy to bother with, though it was of little use.
Having seen the black wolf's ability to slip away from her last attack, Yatai planned this one carefully while she attacked. Charging toward the wolf she wove left and right as though she couldn't make up her mind, making sure it seemed as reckless as possible, and when she was four feet from the sennyo, she swerved off course completely, headed for the right in a wide circlular motion in a full-out loping run as though to attack from behind, but as she reached level with where she estimated the sennyo's head was, she lept and having expected the wolf to have whirled to defend herself as well as being ready to dance out of the way, Yatai aimed toward where the sennyo's haunches had been, aiming farther than she would normally so that the wolf couldn't simpily rear up and back away as well as sweeping her wings out as well to keep her from slipping to either side without getting hit quite hard by a boney wing. THe only other way without fighting was to duck and that what she was prepared for, if the wolf backed away she could easily bowl her over. At least that was what she hoped for, but now there was no more time for thinking of it, she would simpily have to wait for everything to play out. . .taking a breath and letting her jaws hang, ready to snap, she leapt--

Instead of stepping back at the odd headlong assault, she leaped forward to close the four feet of distance between the two. However she was a step too slow and the hybrid dodged and went to a wide circle. She flipped herself around, waiting for the circle to end. Bad thing about wide circles, they were slow, so she was able to watch for the final move.
She would not be strong enough to stop a charge, however momentum was on her side. In the time it took the hybrid to make the circle, her speed lessened enough for Gypsy to feel confident enough to answer the final leap with one of her own. She aimed for the shoulder where the wing connected. Her jaws opened to snap as her lithe body sailed through the air. She relaxed enough so the impact would do minimal damage to both parties.

Skart saw the trouble coming, and the worse part was it was headed for her wing-the most valuable thing of hers, the one thing that guarenteed her freedom, the one thing she truely cared about. Even worse, the gleaming jaws were headed for one of the weakest spots, even a soft blow could easily knock the wing out of its socket or cause some serious muscle damage. There was no need to warn Yatai for panic had spread through his mind and into hers.
Instinct took over; Since it was useless to simpily fold the wing in and it would take too long, both wings were jerked up and back, pulling the to where the underside of her wings face forward, making it far harder to get a grip because there was simpily too much wing to get jaws around. As she did this, Yatai jerked her head so that it was blocking the wing that was about to be attacked, which twisted her forepaws and chest in the direction. With her head blocking the wing, Yatai and Skart both knew knew she was risking her own neck, quite literally. She knew the wolves would clash mid-air, one would have an advantage and the other wouldn't, the fight would continue on ground and it would be jaws to jaws, no more of this agile crap, niether would be given to the chance. And with a nasty snarl and jaws ready to stop the she-wolf-hopefully only that and nothing more- she settled to protect her wing.
