Capricorn nibbled a blade of sweet summer grass, blue eyes lowered in half sleep. His purple coat rustled in the wind, and his black antlers looked like little more than the branches of a dead tree, just above the tall grass. Beside him was a mass of silvery-white fur belonging to his adopted daughter, Hanahara, who was napping peacefully.
To an outsider, the sight of the oddly colored jackalope so near to a wolf would have stirred up many questions, however, for the two of them, there was nothing more natural.
Capricorn had found Hana a year or so earlier, abandoned by her mother and very little chance for survival. Although he knew he was naturally prey to the little pup, he helped her out in any way that he could, talking to her, keeping her warm, finding ways to feed her. It came as a great surprise when later she began repeating his words back to him, the first sign of her particular hybridization.
Since that time, Hana and Capricorn traveled together, father and daughter, although it did earn them some odd looks.
Now, however, there was no one around to stare, and all was peaceful. Capricorn finished up with his little snack, then nosed his way under his daughter's paw. She opened one steely gray eye to look at him, and smiled faintly.
"Remember when I was too small for you to sleep under my paw like that?" she asked in the jackalope tongue. Capricorn snuggled up close.
"Yeah," he replied, "You were a lot easier to care for back then..." he poked her with one tiny paw, "Now you're getting big... how am I supposed to feed you?"
She grinned and licked one of his ears.
"You're getting awfully fat now. I think you'll feed me just fine!" Cappy glowered at her.
"Not funny..." he muttered, beginning to doze off. Hana snorted and tucked her head in as close as she could without stabbing herself with her father's antlers.
There the two lay, dozing in the summer heat. This was the most peace they had had for awhile, without anybody prying or trying to eat Capricorn. It was nice.
However, Capricorn, being part of the small-prey part of the world, knew it could only last for so long. He only hoped that by choosing to stay in an area without a pack, they could avoid the worst of the wolf community. He wouldn't tell Hana about that, though. Better to let her sleep in comfort without worrying about him. He was supposed to worry about her, it was his duty as a father.
So he tucked himself in a little closer and drifted off, trying to leave his worries behind with his consciousness.
