Flight was a joyous thing – Zan often wondered what his life might be like had he not been born a Keiyou; his time spent walking the earth with no release into the skies. It was a depressing thought, and he left it behind as the thermals roiling off the prairie threw him upwards.
It was midday, and the bright summer sun bathed the sea of grass and flowers in rich white-golden light. The same strong breeze that lifted up his wings whipped through the long grasses, and they waved and rippled as he soared overhead. And though his sight was not as good as a hawk’s, the scents that mixed and stirred and danced on the wind were not lost to him in the least; he crowed with delight and twisted into a barrel roll, his wings folded loosely as he dove.
The horizon spun about him, sky blending with earth at an almost sickening speed – he ripped his wings open and leveled out with the practiced ease of someone who’d been pulling the same stunt for years and glided forward upsidedown. He liked to watch the earth roll by underneath him this way; liked to let his creamy red-streaked underbelly be warmed by the sun.
The only thing he didn’t like, he mused as he slowly righted himself, was the loneliness. He had no pack to call his own, no friends to join him on his daily flights – no friends at all, really. A low whine escaped his maw, but was quickly lost to the howling of the wind in his ears. He’d been flying all day, his shadow endlessly chasing him across the ground so far below him, and his wings were only just feeling the tension of fatigue – but what made him tired was not the physical, but the lack of social exertion. He wasn’t used to being left alone for this long.
Zan decided to distract himself with yet another useless aerial display; flaring his wings, he arched backward into a somersault before tilting his nose straight down. He spiraled into his dive and fell for a few minutes – then burst back upwards, broad wings flapping almost effortlessly to bring him back to proper altitude.
