It was a cool autumn morning and a light misty rain fell upon his pelt. The pup lifted his masked face to the sky and let drops of water rest on his tongue. He lapped at the rain playfully and trotted around over the damp fallen leaves.
Maybe being on his own for an afternoon wouldn't be too bad, he might be able to meet someone new. Not many wolves would be out in the middle of a rainstorm, and Halcyon wondered why. It was so much fun! Sure the water was a little cold, but that was what fur was for.
Amid his absent-minded running, Halcyon slipped in the fresh mud. His chin hit the ground and a muffled "omph" was pushed from his mouth. He frowned and picked himself out of the puddle. Being a keiyou had its drawbacks, clumsiness being the most irksome. Small tears gathered at the corner of his eye. The fall had hurt pretty badly, and he wasn't having much fun any more. What he wanted now was a friendly face to help him out of the rain. His bottom jaw was sore and his fur was riddled with mud. "I want momma.." He whimpered softly. [/scrolly]

The morning had been cool and wet, and an overly damp alpha willed himself to land in the valley below him. His wings were cold and tired from the chill. He shook off his pelt in a fine spray of water droplets. Flying for along periods of time in cool mist was not a good idea for an elderly keiyou. However his determination to take care of his pack and children. He was nearing his ninth year of life, and every day it became more apparent. He shuddered a little and began to walk. He didn't want to risk catching a cold in the sky so his intention was to head back to his den and dry off. Maybe his puppies would nap with him and keep him warm. Or maybe Satinka. The thought of a cozy den not far off was tantalizing. His blue eyes seemed glazed over with fatigue. The morning patrol was rough, but he still did it. It didn't take long for him to catch a familiar scent that seemed far away from where it should be. He came out of his daze and looked around. Halcyon? He lifted his chin high over the grass, looking for his son. The bright orange and black pelt was not hard to miss in the browning grass. He turned and in a few strides from his long black legs he came upon the little kieyou blubbering about his momma. "Hal? You alright son?" He came close, he had approached from behind so he wanted to give the lad a chance to react. There was a concerned look on his graying, black face.

He didn't want to cry in front of his father, his hero. He straightened up and took a deep breath, pretending that he was stronger than he was. Halcyon turned to face the adult keiyou, his eyes blinking away the tears and rain.
"Hi, Papa.." He whimpered, failing to keep a steady voice. "I'm-I'm fine." He shivered and went to hide his face in Reynard's leg. He buried his little nose in the familiar warm fur and took a deep breath. The smell was comforting and calmed him considerably. He was safe, all was well.
"I'm glad you're here." The pup said honestly, retreating from his hiding spot. "I was looking for.." He sneezed and then lifted a paw to rub his tender nose. "For my brother and sister..And then I guess I got lost." His dark blue eyes flickered to the nearby mud, "Then I fell.." [/scrolly]

He brought his dark wings protectively forward to partially shield his son from the terrors of the world. Usually he would sit and open them as if to hug, but his son had jumped to his legs faster than the father could react. It made his heart swell with warmth to see how quickly children find their comforts. He did sit down and open his wings a little more as if to be shelter from the weather if Halcyon so chose to huddle beneath him. "Looking for the others, eh? That wasn't nice of them to leave you behind. But look how brave you are, out in the valley all alone. I hope you are keeping an eye out for dangers too." As if expecting something to rear it's head, he gave a cursory glance around the area. He hated the idea of being surprised, especially with his young son here. He looked back down at his son, "Would you like me to help you look for them?" His white tasseled tail flicked slightly. Yes he was offering to help his son look. The truth of it was he was uncomfortable with the little ones being out on their own. He would have to reprimand a sitter upon his return for allowing the pups to go off with out supervision.

The pup made it his mission to become Reynard's favorite and did so by mimicking him at every opportunity. However now was the time to accept his father's affections and enjoy them. Hal moved closer to the male in an effort to warm himself. He beamed up at Rey enthusiastically, "Me? Brave?" The compliment made the youth extensively pleased with himself.
He made an effort to quickly compose himself when Reynard asked if he was looking out for trouble. He nodded proudly and offered his best growl. "Nothing's gettin past us, Papa!" Halcyon imagined himself as an adult fighting side-by-side with his father against some faceless enemy. Although Hal was hardly a warrior by nature, the approval of his father would be enough to turn him into one.
"Thanks, but I'd rather play with you!" Halcyon guiltily enjoyed this alone time, and didn't want to spoil it by involving his siblings. One of his cream-colored paws playfully batted at Reynard's drooping wing. "I know we can't fly until we're older," He began thoughtfully, "But how much older?" His own wings beat enthusiastically at his sides, "I want to learn so badly!" [/scrolly]

Wet and muddy terrain made for poor traction to the beast that patrolled the skirts of the valley. A young, inexperienced calagris had been chased from his herd and was seeking to start his own. He snorted in disdain. The upstart was seeking territory and a harem....since his own father ran him out. The male was shorter than a few other, his front half was that of a a feline, while his back half was the horse. He could smell wolves near by, but he believed he was invincible and would take on a whole pack if it meant furthering his genetics.
His hard eyes narrowed in the gray of the day, there was another scent. A puppy. Even better. He could take out his foes by nipping them in the bud. More room for his future foals and fillies. He searched the horizon, in the distance he could see orange and black. One adult and one kid? The wolves that flew...they were less powerful than other breeds of wolf...he could take them out. By the look of the adult he was old....a fanged grin crossed the beasts maw.
Carefully he stepped down the slope of the meadow. He growled lowly as his hooves slipped a little in the mud. He would get the jump on them no doubt. His eyes were focused, it would not be long before he could attack. His focus, however, made him unaware of the birds. One misstep and a pheasant took wing in an explosion of feathers. He snarled a little in surprise, his cover blown he decided to charge at the pair. It would only take a few seconds to close the couple yards between them, his predatory glare was on the puppy.

He chuckled softly at his son's enthusiasm. It was a nice change of pace to spend some alone time with his kids individually. He crouched down and nuzzled his son lovingly. "Yes you are very brave." He smiled at the affirmation of quality time together. He looked down at his son as he stretched his little wings. He gave him an approving nod, "I think we can start lessons here soon, you have to practice flapping them, get good stretches and--" He stopped, jerking his head up suddenly, ears primed toward the noise of a game bird taking wing. His sharp eyes moved back and forth quickly pinpointing the location of a predator. A calagris was charging straight toward his son, it was all he could do but shout a warning, "Halcyon! Run!" He opened his great wings and leaped over the pup, putting himself between his offspring and the raging beast. He snarled and braced for impact, hoping that he could keep the animal busy while his son escaped.

(Mind if I join in? Ignore this post if you do mind)
Oscar had been sniffing around the meadow for some lunch, taking advantage of the rain to find his favourite snack: juicy, full-bodied worms. The grass was long but there was the odd patch of exposed soil. The angle of the meadow was perfect as the rain followed gravity and stopped the soil from becoming waterlogged.
Oscar was always aware of where he was; however, the long grass often concealed others from him. A sudden gust of damp wind blew the scents of the alpha and his small pup towards Oscar and he froze. What to do? They may not like him being around. They could be sharing secrets, or... ...secrets...Oscar's curiosity got the better of him and he listened, facing into the slight breeze, for a few seconds. What sort of things did the strong Reynard say to his pup, anyway? Parenting fascinated Oscar: the development of a young brain and how an older one could communicate with it was intriguing. He listened a little to Reynard saying something sweet, then a stronger smell began to drift his way. Something bigger, something predatory was coming.
On his guard, he wondered what on earth he should do. If he scarpered now, it would be dishonest and he would not be doing his duty. However, he would also live. If he could somehow help the master and his offspring - but he was no fighter. This was a calagris, and it didn't appear to be in the mood for reasoning. But...he could run faster than that pup...
At Reynard's words of urgency, Oscar made his decision. It wouldn't take too much time for him to reach the pup, then make a swift exit and save both their hides. He bounded towards where the sounds of conversation had come from and found the youngster, making to grab him by the scruff so that they could get away quickly.

"What is that?!" He screamed, frozen with fear. Reynard leaped to his defense and the pup's admiration for him grew. He was so valiant, and Hal wanted to grow up just like him. The keiyou made a conscious decision then to stand by his father and fight off this terrifying..Creature.
He stepped forward hesitantly and put on a brave face. "D-don't worry, Pa, we can take him!" His attempt at courage might have seemed cute in any other situation. He gulped and stared at the charging predator.
The chance to show his bravery and impress Reynard was swiftly taken away. Halcyon struggled in the grip of the wolf which came up behind him. "Let me go!" He cried out in protest. "Papa!" Things were moving too quickly, and terror swept through the pup's body. [/scrolly]

He bellowed in rage as the adult got in his way. The calagris noticed he seemed a little bigger, however it was too late to back down. The wings were making the wolf more intimidating than he was. However it made him even more angry. How dare he. Out of the corner of his eye he saw a dark shape dart out of the grass. Was he taking the pup? NO! He wanted the morsel for himself. Either way, he needed to get through the keiyou.
With the mud turning under his hooves and paws, he shifted his weight to leap at the wolf. He aimed low on the tall wolf, hoping to knock him off balance. He opened his jaws to attempt to bite at any part of the wolf he could get. It seemed like the wolf was not going to move, so he was at least hoping to get a chunk or two out of him.

His son was being stubborn, brave and stupid. If it was a different situation, then maybe Reynard would have been proud. The problem was that he was not even sure that he himself could take on this beast alone. His son would not last a minute. He bared his fangs at the charging beast and directed a wing down to block Hal from advancing. Reynard did not have the time to tell him a second time to get back. He heard paw falls behind him. Was it an ambush? Fearing his for his son once more, he turned his head away from the beast as Oscar ran in. His son protested, but Reynard had a second to be glad.......before the calagris charged into him. He snapped his head back around, feeling a painful wrench of whiplash, he felt pain in his chest and legs. He was out weighed by thirty stone...and his ribs felt like it. The calagris matched him in height...but the heftiness was like a grizzly bear. He hit the ground hard, and buffeted his wings around the head of the beast, he clawed and kicked with his paws. He felt teeth connect with his forepaw briefly. He turned his head and yelled to the lupus, "Oscar! Get him out of here now!" Deep down he didn't want his son to see him potentially get killed. And if all he had to do was defend himself, he didn't have to worry about being honorable in the fight. He could fight dirty... He turned back to attempt to bite at the face and eyes of the calargirs that had him pinned just due to the weight difference. ((Yeah, did the calculation of what a smallish size calagris would weight. If he is 9 hands, he is just about three feet tall, and an pony/horse that size would be around 600 lbs. Rey is just 3 feet tall, but 55 lbs. He is going to end up with some broken bones.....if he is lucky))

Oscar gripped the struggling pup firmly in his jaws. He might even be gripping too tight - but the small injuries caused by that would heal. The pup wanted to fight with his daddy - of course he did, brave wee thing, but that would not achieve anything. In fact it would make Reynard even less likely to survive! Oscar understood this, but knew the cub would not.
A heartier wolf might have hesitated a little, watched his master go down - but not Oscar. The sooner he got out of here, the sooner he could come back and help...if that was his intention, which he hadn't decided yet. The alpha would have to hold his own and any hesitation would be the death of both Oscar and the frisky wee pup. What a fireball of courage! Oscar was hurtling away from the scene and had all but disappeared in the tall grass when he heard the instruction from Reynard to get Halcyon out of here. That was probably a command in case Oscar was having second thoughts.
It wasn't easy to run at full tilt through grass, with an angry lump of fur in your mouth. Oscar ran for his life and the life of the pup - all the power he could summon surged through his legs, forcing the strides wider, the leaps stronger. His lungs burned and his eyes watered through fear of death. Still then his calculating mind would not stray from its lateral path. The thought that kept him from despair was: that monster is running for its meal. I am running for my life. The pup was forgotten, clutched between his jaws because he had given no thought to releasing it. Oscar's thoughts were of himself and his survival. On he ran, not daring to slow down, not daring to look back.

ooc: Entering with Cy's permission. 170 + 55 vs 600? lol slightly better odds perhaps.
The mist that shrouded the morning had been much to the water lupus' liking, resting on top of his fur without penetrating into the heavier layers. The lupus had been submitted to a transforming, a rare occurrence and perhaps a great gift from the Great Spirit. It had all began after his arrival back home from his latest journey away when he had begun to feel simply fantastic. His old wounds and aging bones stopped hurting entirely causing the lupus to assume it was only a temporary stroke of rare luck, however when his fur had begun to regain its original luster, loosing the new grey and regained the lustrous shine he had been proud of in his youth, Coneiron knew something was amiss. The package became solidified when his muscles began to regain their youthful strength, hardening to what they had been in the past without Coneiron's training. He now woke every morning feeling grand, a new brilliance to his eyes and a stronger sprint to his steps. The male did not know what to make of the experience, all he knew was that not only had he stopped aging, but the process had reversed itself.
A great smile, back to its white shade of youth, often graced his maw and like a rare gift he now had the wise knowledge of elder wolves and the strength of a younger one and he would not complain. Reaching the crest of the hill in the meadow he gazed upon the odd scene below him, watching in concern as a wolf came forward to carry a off pup that resembled Reynard an awful bit. Narrowing his eyes he did indeed see the Chief not to far off and sucked in his breath as the players fell into place. Anger racked his spine as he saw a Calagris threatening the pup and charging down Reynard who was trying to shield the young wolf from the killer animal.
Although Coneiron did not recognize the other wolf he did hear Reynard call out for him to get his son to safety. But that left the Chief against the beast that still out weighed him and was not in a mood to be taken lightly. With alarming speed for one of his age the water lupus sprinted down the slope, yelling out a snarl that would hopefully startle the beast long enough for Coneiron to make it to Reynard's side. His voice having rarely needed to be raised now thundered out deep from within his chest as his thick paws and hind quarters barreled him closer. The beast was upon the keiyou and did not show signs of stopping, leaving the lupus but one option.
Growling out Coneiron took a leap and pummeled into the odd feline horse, claws and teeth scrambling to make contact on the larger animal's shoulder. There was no time to use his elemental power as an offense tactic, the least he could do was use the mist to create foggy conditions that would shroud the 2 wolves and hopefully hide the escaping wolf and Reynard's son. However it would take a couple minutes to fully build a good and thick fog which meant in the mean time Coneiron had to find a way to get the enraged beast off of the Chief. Snarling in frustration he tried to scratch at the animal's face, desperately aiming for the eyes while trying to avoid the Chief. The male did not know what chance he had of helping against the animal on his own, but if the pair of them worked together perhaps they might be able to take the beast down.

(( If Hal does not object, we can focus on the fight for a second, then he can come back in when he is online. Or wait another day for his response, I just want to get this done since I plan on Reynard getting pretty beaten up here that will take place in other plots))

The beast was in a blood lust. He was dimly aware that something was bellowing back at him. However his focus was in protecting his eyes. He wrenched back a little away from the biting snout of the keiyou. He felt teeth graze his own nose and cheek and hissed his disapproval. He slammed his head forward, headbutting the wolf to have better access to biting more vital bits. His jaws met just at the shoulder, missing the vein due to the struggling wolf. He bit in, trying to rend the flesh and bone.
Something heavy hit his back he let go in surprise as he felt claws and teeth from yet another wolf. His mouth had blood in it and he bellowed in anger at the fact he couldn't taste more. He reared back on his powerful horse legs in an attempt to throw the wolf from his shoulders. He felt something connect just above his eye gashing it open to spill blood in his left eye. Half blinded by his own blood he began to buck attempting to both trample the wolf below him and toss the wolf on top of him. He also tried to turn his neck to grab any part of the offending wolf he could grab. His hooves coming dangerously close to the keiyou.
Two small wolves. One big calagris. In his mind he would win this, he had strength that's all he needed! Sure he traveled in a herd, but most the time calagris hunted alone. He knew wolves lived in packs, but he wasn't quite remembering the fact that wolves were better in numbers.....perhaps he would be reminded soon enough.
