Pain. That was the primary feeling he had right now. His ribs and lungs were burning from strain. His forepaw was throbbing where it had been bitten. He struggled to get a hold, he had a small moment of glory as he bloodied the snout. He want to bite the exposed throat, but was met with a hard head hitting him across the face. His head snapped back again, further straining his neck, he was dazed and tried to shake his head to clear his sight. He then felt fangs hit his shoulder and the pain was blinding. He bellowed in pain as the calagris shook his head. He heard a sickening pop as his shoulder was dislocated. A new wash of pain overcame him to add to his throbbing head. It felt as it the beast was going to rip it from his body. Then he heard dimly the yelling of a wolf. He felt more weight press on his ribcage as something landed on the predator. He was having trouble breathing at this point, he was gasping in pain and for breath at the same time. However there was a brief relief as the calargis released him and reared back. His mind was foggy, but he knew he had to move lest he was pinned once more. He flipped over out of instinct, yet he landed on the wrong leg, it crumpled beneath him and he hit the dirt to the side of the thrashing beast. He splayed his wings, trying to use them to push himself up. At this point the hooves of the animal connected with his left wing and he howled in pain as he felt one of the delicate bones snap in his wing. Lucky the beast was still moving and his wing was not pinned long. Now his left wing was broken and his right shoulder dislocated. He needed to get clear to mount another attack. He gathered his leg under his body as best he could. It dangled a little, but he was at least able keep it out of the way Now he could see his savior. Coneiron. Though something was different about it...he seemed so much younger. He didn't have time to riddle it out, chalking it up to delirium from the pain. He snarled, pursing his lips and pointing his ears toward the chaos, challenging the calagris once more to try to get him. He paused long enough for a broad side of the calagris to be exposed and lunged on three legs toward the flank, attempting to rip into it.

Coneiron felt his teeth connect with flesh, the satisfying knowledge that he had managed to grab ahold of at least part of the animal's flesh pushing him forward with renewed vigor. Snarling in his attempt to hold on, the brute felt the calagris rear its body and his own body being throw, rolling uncontrollably several feet away. Dazed from the shock of the landing the burning on his side barely registered at first as blood began to flow from the wound on his hind leg where the calagris had manged to rip his flesh before dislodging the wolf. Getting back on his feet the youthful wolf was ready for another charge, leaning more on the left to relieve the pain from the right paw he had landed on.
Shaking his head he tried to clear his vision, claws scraping along the ground in anger. Blasted beast would not get the better of them, Coneiron was disinclined to give the animal that satisfaction, he would tear the calagris apart even if it killed him. Fog was now gathering thick around the beast's legs, obscuring the two wolves and their movements but never traveling high enough to fully block the enraged brute from their view. Glancing over Coneiron could barely make out the shape of Reynard, and by the angle of his wing and shoulder the chief was not in the best of conditions, but like a true leader the keiyou charged again, bringing a smile to the lupus' face.
If the fog obscured the view the fighting cries would still alert the pack and with exceptional hearing and sense of smell others would still be able to make to their aid. Barking out Coneiron gave a large howl to the other wolves, demanding aid and intervention. Perhaps they might enjoy a calagris meal. With another growl of anger the lupus threw himself back at the calagris, black shape appearing from the fog, as he reached up to try and plant his fangs into the animal's side while trying to avoid the thrashing hooves. Moving to the side he used his height to lunge up at the beast's shoulder, claws trying to scrape along it's hide.
However he received a solid jab to his own ribs from the animal's hooves, knocking the breath from his body as he jumped away to try and regain his breath. Finally he was able to breath in some gulps, but the sharp stabbing pain his his side suggested at best bruised if not broken ribs. Glaring he rushed forward to try and latch on to one of the front legs of the animal, aiming to sever tendons and slow the animal's rampage.

Cold and damp wasn't Angel's thing. No, not at all to the white and black Kieyou's liking. But Reynard's eldest daughter was out anyway, training herself. She wanted to be a guardian, to make her father proud. It would be that much harder with his attention being divided up between her, the pack, and his new family. Fog had rolled in, making it that much more difficult to see where she placed her paws. In the slipping meadow that could be a dangerous thing, but it was good for training herself.
The young wolf's concentration on her footing was broken by the smell of blood and not the prey kind. Angel's head snapped up from the ground to look out across the meadow. There, through the shroud of fog were three figures. A calagris, a blackish blue lupus, and a black and red Kieyou. Her father. Angel's eyes widened in horror as the calagris bore down on him. She started to run toward them as Coneiron leaped at the beast.
Black wings tucked in close as Angel's darted toward the battle. The wet grass almost had her sliding down, making her look like she was almost gliding across the ground. She watched as Coneiron was thrown and then as he and her father rushed the predator once again. It was then that she realized she was coming in too fast.
Snarling both a warning and distraction Angel snapped out her wings and leaped onto the calagris' back.Missing her target, her jaw snapped tight onto the thing's ear.
ooc: hope you can work with that.

He had shaken the lupus from his back and turned to attack it once more. However the kieyou he had first targeted came out and ripped into his flank. He bellowed a strange cry of cat and horse the reverberated through the ground around them. The fog was thickening, he was still blinking his blood out from the shallow cut above his eye. His eyesight was impaired, and this enraged him so much more than he could imagine.
He wheeled, slashing out with his feline forepaws at the dark shape in the mist that must have been the kieyou. However he was hit from the other side as well, he lashed out with his hooves this time, feeling one connect with the dark lupus. He wanted to rip both of them apart, he shifted his weight and slashed again with a forepaw for the red wolf.
Then there was a whoosh of wind and he felt one of his tall ears get snagged. He yowled in pain as the momentum and off centered weight tilted him to the side. He felt his ear rip free of his head, the pressure being too much to bear. He fell to his side lashing out with limbs all around. Death. That's what they all deserved. Death! He would feast on their hearts as soon as he could get a hold of them. He moved his head around, looking for the newest oppressor. Another winged wolf! He glared out of one open eye as he attempted to roll his bulky body back over.

Meanwhile...
Oscar had made himself lighter by removing gravity from his body - something he often did to increase speed. He needed somewhere to put it and he had been using it to flatten the grass before him.
Allowing himself a glance back, he saw another keiyou rushing towards the scene. Perhaps another offspring of Reynard's. She was going to help...Oscar manipulated the gravity to flatten the grass ahead of her and make her more able to run forward. He could not make her lighter but he could make the grass heavier.
At least two wolves were stalling the calagris. It shouldn't be too hot on its feet. Oscar was a long way from the scene now and wondered when he should stop, especially since he hadn't decided whether or not he would go back to help. If he did go back to help, it would be a mistake if he was tired.
Presently on the left a wide, shallow river appeared. The water flowed sluggishly and Oscar thought nothing of bounding right into the middle of it, using the water to mask his scent as he continued to run. A few hundred metres of this, he thought, and I'll be home and hosed. He lifted the water around him, making it easy to run through and followed the stream for a good few bounds before doing a flying leap out of the water onto the other bank. Here a glade of trees shaded the area and he dropped the pup, panting heavily, his thin legs shaking with fatigue.
Now Oscar was faced with a dilemma. Most of him knew that he should take the cub and continue running to safety. That way the calagris was sure to not be able to get him. If he returned to the fight, it would know the pup was abandoned somewhere. It wouldn't be too long before it killed all three wolves and sniffed out Halcyon. This thought, however, was merely a justification for wanting to save his own skin. Oscar was no coward, not by any means - his emotional intelligence was too limited to let fear have much of a say in what he did. But he was logical, and flinging yourself into a battle you are sure to lose is not.
Being seen in a good light by your alpha, however, is certainly logical. He did not care about rank but he did not want to be treated like dirt or outcast. One day, perhaps Halcyon would be alpha...

He was so angry at this stranger for taking him away from the fight when Reynard clearly needed help! The little pup whined in frustration when he realized escape would be impossible. He winced slightly at the deathgrip the adult had on his neck and then slumped in defeat. There was nothing he could do at this point to help his dad, so he simply went limp in Oscar's jaws.
Tears of anguish clouded his vision, and exhaustion made the pup unsure of his surroundings. He was aware that they were moving, trees were flying by at fast speeds and the ground was blurred. If this had been any other situation, Halcyon may have enjoyed the exhilarating feeling of being whisked through the meadow. At one point he noticed that there was water underneath him. The keiyou lifted his rump to avoid the cold splashes, but he still ended up getting wet.
Then the orange male was unceremoniously dropped back to the ground. He blinked and shook himself. His young mind began to work again, and he took a good look at his captor. This wolf was dark furred and lacked wings, but he had moved with agility that Hal admired. The youth may have been tired and shivering, but he was still bitter about being taken against his will. He thought of asking the lupus' name, but instead turned his back to the adult and sat down with a heavy sigh. [/scrolly]

By now Oscar had got his breath back and come up with a plan. He looked with annoyance at the young cub with its back turned but when he spoke, his voice was even and firm. "You hate me for taking you away from your papa, I know," said Oscar, using the cub's own terminology as an attempt to sound friendlier. "You are full of courage and fire. But you are also smaller than Reynard and he would have a job trying to keep you from harm while fighting that calagris. If you had stayed, it is probable that both of you would have died."
He paused to let it sink in. Youngsters, in some ways, thought slower than adults and not many wolves thought as quickly as Oscar. "I don't expect you to understand at all but please, take my word from it. I am your pack brother and everything I do is for the good of the pack and your father in particular. The reason I am telling you this is because now I have two options: I can stay here and stop you from going back to save your papa, or I can help him myself. I saw another wolf going to help him: between us we would have a good chance at fighting it off. But for me to go back there, I need to be sure you will stay right here while I find someone to take you back to the packlands."
Of course, much of this was lie. Lying is not normally logical, but right now it was imperative. Oscar's main purpose in life was not to save the pack and Reynard. Three wolves did not have a great chance against a calagris. And talking to the cub was buying him time - soon the fight would be over and if Oscar got there near the end of the fight, he would probably receive fewer injuries.
((Hal, do you want to start another thread where Oscar can get someone to look after Halcyon and then he can come back to this one? Or shall we just continue in this thread?))

The adult seemed to understand, and was only trying to help. In his mind Hal knew that he was right, that he wouldn't have been much help in the fight. The pup stayed quiet, looking down at his paws while imagining how his father must be fairing.
His head turned around and his eyes looked questioningly in Oscar's direction. So he wanted to go back? The young keiyou shivered, suddenly afraid of being left alone. He shook off the fear, determined to stay brave.
"You can go back." He said with the authority of the alpha's first born. "Don't waste time finding somebody to take care of me, I'll be fine." He paused, dark blue eyes looking off into the trees.
"I'll stay put here." The pup promised, glancing back at his caretaker. Halcyon had already planned out what he would do once Oscar left. He would follow the adult as best as he could back to the fight. Halcyon wasn't foolish enough to go back into the fray, but he needed to know what was happening.

Oscar wasn't surprised, though he was disappointed, that the pup didn't want him to find anyone else. There was nothing for it now but to go back. At least he would have the element of surprise... "If I catch you following me I will break your legs," he said before turning and retracing his steps back. He meant it too: well, he would only break one but at least that could be healed. He hoped the pup would be smart enough to heed his warning. At first Oscar ran as fast as he could until he was out of Halcyon's sight; then he relaxed a little, saving his energy for the fight. Oscar was not built for fighting but for talking his way out of a fight. He would last as long as a fart in a hurricane if the calagris' claws got into him. But he had no intention of allowing that to happen.
In hindsight, perhaps it wasn't a great idea to threaten the future alpha - Oscar could only hope that one day he would understand. For now, there was a new plan to formulate: how to beat the calagris. He ran back beside the river, a faster route which would look good if anyone was watching. Not that anyone watching would find it easy explaining themselves. Occasionally he looked back to see if Halcyon was following.
A few metres away from the scene, Oscar found a place to hide while he watched what was going on. There were two wolves helping Reynard. The alpha, to his great credit, was lunging at the dreaded thing despite looking crumpled and broken. Oscar felt almost ashamed watching so brave a wolf. Another younger wolf - a lupus, Oscar realised - and the keiyou he had seen before were giving the beast a hard time. They seemed a fair match for it.
Now, what to do...what to do...he wouldn't have the element of surprise for much longer. The simplest thing seemed to be to wait until it got closer then...where was its weak spot? The eyes? Unfortunately they were next to the jaws: no way. Oscar remembered that his brother Grebo would get between the shoulder blades of an opponent whenever he could. It was a signature move of his and seemed almost paralysing to a wolf. The calagris was tall...but height was no obstacle to a gravity lupus. Sucking up his remaining energy Oscar kicked off from the ground, removing as much of his own gravity as he could and placing it instead in front of Coneiron to make his path easier. No sense in wasting it. Oscar leapt up as far as he could go before plunging his front two paws towards the dent between the shoulderblades like a fox leaping on a snow-covered mouse.

He blinked in surprise as a flash of white passed over his head. The calagris screamed in agony as it toppled to the ground. What happened? He didn't have time to see, for one of the claws came dangerously close to his face. He pulled back a little and saw that his daughter had joined the fray. His heart fell a little, he didn't want to see his little girl get hurt. However the blood on her maw suggested she was no longer the little puppy she once was. She was an adult, and willing to fight. Reynard went to the same side that Conerion had been attack, wanting to pull the attention away from his daughter. He grabbed the side of the calagris face and put all his weight behind moving it to a sphinx position. Maybe it would break with the chaos that was going on. All Rey knew was that he was running on adrenaline, he would not last much longer in his broken state. They needed reinforcements, or to at least hunt the thing like wolves were so good at. He let go in surprise when a black shape leaped up from behind them. Oscar? Had he gotten his son to safety? He didn't have time to ask as the lupus struck the calagris on the thickly muscled shoulders. Two lupus and two keiyou against one calagris. Perhaps the odds were better than he thought, he just needed to gather the strength to stick it out till the end. He didn't need predators in his territory, especially with so many young pups running around.

Growling with the exertion of struggling to stay in the fight and not receiving another kick, Coneiron took extra care in keeping his damage rib cage out of reach. He received another good slash of claws along his own flank, flesh burning in the open air and red blood marred his black and blue coat. However the lupus was not about to back off and using his weight he slammed back up into the calagris, trying to use the weight from all the wolves to topple the beast. The fog was now in full swing, but there was not much else he could do without harming the other wolves.
Fangs barred he flattened his ears to his skull, the beast beginning to aggravate the lupus. Predator that came and threatened pack lands deserved no better then death and snarling out in his conviction he slammed back into the calagris with a leap, claws extended to try and drag down the side of the animal as his jaw snapped at the beast's flesh. There were four of them fighting the enraged animal, surely the number would be enough and if they could just topple the beast and gain access to its more vulnerable points and arteries the fight would swing in their favor. However it had best be done soon for it did not look as though Reynard was in any shape to receive more of a beating.
To make matters worse Reynard was the father of several litters of pups and then some and they could not go without a father any more then the pack could go without a leader. This drove Coneiron to fight with a controlled frenzy as he pushed his muscles to fight for more then himself. Of course the lupus was more prone to fighting for a cause then for himself, and a just cause often fueled his calm strength, clear direction and an understanding of what mattered. This fight was no exception and he lunged at the creature, trying once again to upset it's balance, barking to upset its hearing and confuse the animal. If he had been feeling young before the male was certain to wake tomorrow feeling worse then before. Or so one might think...

Blood stained Angel's maw as the calagris' ear ripped free from it's head. Disgusted she spat out the chunk. The beast roared in pain as it tipped over, bringing Angel too the ground. Off balance, the little one's wings flapped, instinct telling her to fly and get away. But she didn't have enough time and her front right paw got trapped under six hundred pounds of predator. What was worse was that the thing kept moving, trying to roll on top of her. Angel yelped in fear.
But luck was on the Kieyou's side. Another wolf had joined the battle, leaping onto the calagris' back in much the same way Angel had. With three other wolves to deal with it gave Angel time to free her paw, which now hung lip and useless. With Coneiron and Reynard attacking it's flank and Oscar on the beasts back, Angel lunged for it's head. Claws of her one good paw scrapping at one of it's eyes and teeth tearing at it's feline muzzle. If only someone could get through to the calagris' throat.

The beast bellowed in aggravation edging on panic. He felt wolves tearing at him from several sides. He lashed out blindly with his clawed forepaws, his hooves were pinned under him as he crouched to defend his soft belly. The eye with blood in it shut tight, leaving him vulnerable on that side. Of course, that was the side the two males were on, ripping at his flank and cheek. He slapped out in a blind rage to the closest one, hoping to connect with something vital.
He felt a break and was going to leap away when a sudden weight hit him on his hard shoulders. He cried out in rage and reared up to try to throw the new lupus off his back. He was not a beast of great stamina just yet, and his temper was sapping his energy just as quick as the wolves bleeding him. As he reared he lashed out once more with his paws, however her felt something hit his throat. The brighter keiyou had lunged for him, he shook his head trying to save his eyes and jugular. His usual speed was hampered by the weight between his shoulders.
He was realizing that he was not indestructible. What was going to be an exercise in eliminating simple competition was turning into his own struggle to survive. He snarled in defiance, but he had left himself horribly exposed in his attempt to defend his face. He shifted his weight to attempt to slap at the female with both forepaws.

When Oscar's weight had pulled him down between the calagris' shoulderblades as far as he could go, he landed his back legs on the beast's spine, glanced around for Halcyon and kicked off again knowing he would otherwise be thrown off. Unfortunately the only way he could leap was forward - to the more dangerous end of this animal. He landed a little to the left of its writhing head, spinning around immediately and then shot forward towards the beast's huge paws with his jaws open. It was his will to close them around...well, the more tender areas of its underside, near the tail.
Oscar's tactic may look suicidal, but his thinking was thus: they could win this fight. There was no vulnerable spot on the calagris accessible to him except for the tail - but to go for this would give it no room to retreat. There was no way Oscar would fight the front end, with its teeth and paws able to kill a wolf with one swipe. The only other option was to find a tender area that was less likely to result in Oscar's death or the beast being surrounded by attackers. At this point, running away now would probably get him in serious trouble from the alpha or his offspring.
There was of course a way the calagris could defend itself from Oscar - a swift kick from the back legs would have a chance of knocking him out. But to do this it would need to put its front paws on the ground, leaving it more susceptible to attack from the other three fighters.

Reynard's strength was quickly being sapped as well, his shoulder injury was still bleeding from the initial bite. He was shaken off by the beast and saw it rear back up. He lunged for one of the fore legs that was going for his daughter. However, the pain his body was in was making him more sluggish. He missed. He caught himself, much to the jarring pain in his body. His miss had allowed him to see that Oscar was trying a different sort of attack. He couldn't help but smirk, that was one way to incapacitate the raging beast. Go for the jewels. So he opted to keep the beast distracted so he could not kick out. He thrust his head up and snapped at the collar bone of the calagris, attempting to pull it to the ground. This put him in range of forepaws, however, he could avoid the jaws that already had his blood on them. The pack group would have to finish this soon, before Reynard passed out from blood loss, or was rendered unconscious due to yet another attack. He needed Conerion's strength, Angel's agility, and Oscar's cunning to all follow his lead to make this swift and with little injury to the canines.
